I was really skeptical of solo games, but recently it just clicked and I've had a lot of fun with it.

The idea of using random tables and soloplay as tools for a larger worldbuilding project is something I am also working on. I'd love to hear more about your journal game, what sorts of mechanics you're using etc.

Combat mechanics are old school dnd. Inventory management is big as well. For world building I am using a historical map of the Czechia region, as well as making a list of hooks and oddities from a few history podcasts I listen to. Encounters are from the tables in the old school DMs guide, based on environment (forest, mountains, etc). Basically I have three characters, they wander around trying to survive in the immediate aftermath of a brutal civil war as food is scarce, and predators, fear, and criminals are abundant. Hmm maybe I will play tonight!

I tryed many game systems including DCC, Dungeon World, Ironsworn, from D&D Redbox to 5e, and Castles and Crusades. There were things I liked about all of them and more; but the 1 game system for me that best covered the best of them all is Martin Knight's D100 DUNGEON MAPPING books RPGame system. I really love this D100 Dungeon system.

Zozer Games has two solo books for Traveller; one for Classic Traveller the other for their HOSTILE setting (gritty 80s sci fi), each has work flows for different types of campaigns--commercial spacer, marines, roughnecks, exploration, etc.

Thanks for the heads up! I will take a look at the classic Traveller one - I seem to remember reading a book with some different work flows for campaigns, but I don’t think it was Zozer, so I appreciate the heads up!

Pendragon is great solo! Forbidden Lands mostly works I think…cities and locations may be tougher to run solo, but overland travel and story hooks are great for solo. Stars without Number is also very strong - feels a bit generic, but the faction turn is amazing. Most of the rest of these are on my “to read” list! Thanks for sharing!

I grew up playing Ambush! My dad is a wargamer and he has the box and all the expansions. He would often play that game with me, because I was to young to play actual wargames against him. You play a squad of 8 soldiers and we would just split them up. I would get 4 and he would get 4. Next we'd try to run them through WWII with all the scenarios in order of date (instead of difficulty). Cool thing was that I did this same thing with a friend from my RPG group once. The look on his face when we were getting our arses kicked by this primitive AI system using prompts and a slide card was just brilliant! Well worth it if you can get it.

The are two new books coming out for Forbidden Lands: The Bloodmarch wich expands the content with a new region west of The Ravenlands, and The Book of Beasts a huge bestiary. This Book of Beasts also contains more tools for generating stuff and a Solo Rules section similar to the one found in Twilight 2000.

For people looking for solo campaign advice: What I did is find an RPG system I like, and then adventures I'd never been through. You don't even have to read the adventure beforehand, so every new page can be a surprise. There's lots of this stuff found online. - There's a system called Black Streams -- that's your basic rules for actual solo adventuring. It covers combat, damage, surviving impossible odds, etc. It's free, so you've lost nothing but time if you don't like it. It's part of a larger ruleset called Scarlet Heroes. I love the system but loathe the setting. - If you can find the Fabled Lands gamebooks he mentions, get them. They all fit together, so that you can transition from one book to another simply by making a choice. Pre-programmed adventures are better, sometimes. The Conquered Lands is the first book in that series. - There are several Tunnels and Trolls adventures that are set up for solo play. You'll have to do some converting beforehand or on the fly like I did. - If you're truly on your own, download the free One Page Solo Engine. It's super-useful for a basic structure to set the scene and keep things moving when you don't have a pre-planned adventure. - Reddit has tons of tables covering nearly anything you can think of. Sorry there are no links -- my first comment had them and got deleted.

I actually just discovered Ironsworn and I think it's cool. I'm creating a character and building my world at the moment before starting. The character I'm making is also Spirit-bound. His name is Bataar and he is a sea God, and due to misdeeds that caused the death of another God he was stripped of his godly powers. His background vow is to reclaim his God hood and the spirit that is haunting him is the God whose death he caused. I think that will be pretty cool.

I've played Thousand Year Old Vampire. It's better the more you study the history of the time you're in, different as you move along. I found having an event happen every 20 to 25 years was most accurate but this is not their recommendation and sometimes you can't go by that.
