You have to check out the Moonmadness concert at the Royal Albert hall from 2018, they have a new keyboard player Pete Jones who has been blind since he was 15months old, also plays the saxophone often with keyboard at the same time. Andy Latimer still brilliant along with Colin Bass and Denis Clements on drums, what a great concert wish I had been there.

Camel has always been one of my favorite bands since I discovered them in ‘78. You call out a lot of the major tracks, but I would give honorable mentions to two tracks from I Can See... that you didn’t note: Wait (the dueling lead Moog solos of Kit Watkins and Jan Schellhaas are astonishing), and Hymn to Her, which is built around one of Andy Latimer’s most profound guitar melodies - I’m not a big fan of his vocal style, but what he does to make a guitar express the depths of human emotion is beyond praise, and is really unlike anyone else. Camel were perhaps too much of a musician’s band for great commercial success, but to those who can appreciate impeccable composition/arrangement, taste, and an exceptional melodic gift, they will always stand as one of the greats.

Just ordered a used copy of the Mirage LP (Janus pressing) can't wait to hear it! Big fan of Camel and your channel is maybe the best Prog rock channel on YT. You deserve way more subscribers, and I wish more people would listen to prog rock classics these days. I feel like it's all niche and as the years go by, the audience shrinks. Thank you for keeping prog rock culture alive.

Great list Pete! I first heard Camel while I was in high school, right around when Mirage was released. Wore out a couple of vinyl records of Mirage through the years. To me, nothing they did ever eclipsed those classic first four albums by the original lineup. I've got everything they ever did and like it all, but those first four are just superb.

Hi Pete, thanx for another great list of Top 10 Songs... i also think that Camel is a very underrated Band... always in the shadow of Genesis, Floyd etc.. they never had a single hit and here in germany i never heard a Camel Song in the radio. Andy Latimer is in my opion one of the most emotional guitarists; Steve Rothery said in his honour for Andy Latimer, that three guitarists inspired him... Dave Gilmour, Steve Hackett and Andy Latimer. Greetings and best wishes from germany... Chris

Great group to select for a top-10 song list. Andrew Latimer is a great guitarist who deserves much more recognition than he has received, IMO. My favorite Camel album is "Stationary Traveller". That might be because I'm interested in the history of WW2 and it's immediate aftermath, but it seems to me that most of the songs on that album are great songs. "Pressure Points" (especially the extended 6-minute version) and "Stationary Traveller" are great melodic instrumental songs. "Vopos" starts out rather quiet, but then at the 1-minute mark switches into being a much more intense vocal song. "Long Goodbyes" is a great wistful song to close the album with. And really I like all the songs on the album. That said, it's hard for me to argue against the songs you went with for the top 2. I was disappointed that there was no mention of "Stationary Traveller" in the first 8, but then you come up with "Lunar Sea", and I'm like "Okay, yeah, that really has to be in the top 4", and then "Lady Fantasy" beats even that. I might not put them as #1 and #2, but it's hard for me to argue against anyone who does put them at the top. I love the "Moonmadness" and "Rain Dances" albums, so I was happy with all your picks from those. Getting back to the later albums, I like the songs on "Dust and Dreams", although the studio versions on "Dust and Dreams" are just too slow and tired-sounding (IMO). Instead I'd recommend people get the live album called "Never Let Go", and play the second CD of that. In addition to better (livelier) versions of "Dust and Dreams", the CD closes out with a live version of "Lady Fantasy". And of course the first CD starts with your #5 pick, "Never Let Go" 😊 Given that you're such a fan of the early albums, I thinnk that Peter Bardens should get an honorable mention for his contribution to those. And there are a number of other great musicians who have shown up in the various versions of Camel over the years. Quite a lot of talent has been in this group!

My favourite album is clearly Mirage, but The Snow Goose and Moonmadness come right after and at the same level. Definitely one of my favourite Progressive Rock bands ever. Top 5.

Go back and listen to Rose of Sharon from Dust and Dreams. Anytime an artist mixes vocal melodies from 2 parts of the song at once to me is brilliant. And listen to that lead guitar!! My number 1 didn't even make your top 10. Eye of the Storm followed by Who We Are is my number 1 Camel moment. The last 3 minutes of Who We Are may be my favorite moment in music!

Hi Pete, so happy you did a show on the top Camel songs. Very underrated band; to me definitely in the top 5 progbands of all time. Guitarist Andy Latimer has something that very few axemen can boast of: within 4 bars of playing, you immediately recognize his playing, even if you have never heard the song. I like his vocals too, although admittedly, he is less of a “Voice” than, say, Gabriel, Collins or Anderson. The other musicians (I’m talking the original 70’s line-up here) are no slouches either; love Peter Bardens’ (RIP) keyboards, and Andy Ward was a fantastic drummer, again: “underrated”! Putting together a top 10 is difficult slash impossible. I choose the entire Snow Goose album on the first spot, which I think is not really cheating: to me, The Snow Goose is actually, just like JT’s Thick as a Brick, one long track. It was actually my first progrock album, bought at the tender age of 15…. Agree that the 70’s material (in particular the first 4 albums) is strongest, although I quite like the later albums too. Here’s my list: 1 The snow goose (whole album) 2 Lady fantasy 3 Echoes 4 Nimrodel/the procession/the white rider 5 Song within a song 6 Freefall 7 Chord change 8 Arubaluba 9 Breathless 10 Ice Would love if you could also do a show on Caravan (I know you’re not a super fan, but maybe you can give Live at Fairfields Halls a spin; mind blowing!), Curved Air, Renaissance, City Boy, Mostly Autumn, Strawbs, Porcupine Tree, Steve Hackett. Thanks for all you great vids!
