Fun fact: the reason the film version of The Music Man isn’t awful? All the leading men in the early 60’s approached by Warner Brothers refused the role of Harold Hill. (Well, *all* might be an exaggeration, but at least the ones they really wanted…) So they had to go with the actor who originated the stage role, Robert Preston. Why can’t this happen all the time?

I think both performances of the phantom have their merits, but I think Butler was just hurting his voice after a while. I think a good vocal coach could have REALLY helped (but as with most movies with Cameron mackintosh involved, actors don’t get help with anything) though I do think it’s unfair to use the “darkness deep as hell” line as an example of butler not hitting the note properly, when that particular line is him angry and and having a breakdown. It’s meant to be gritty for the camera at that point.

I saw a documentary recently that she actually was not very popular among the critics when they first reviewed the show. she had a few negative critiques. I love Patti; I have to cuz I’m gay. But the song played in the opening comparison with Madonna is the one that I least like Patti doing in the show. I loathe her tone on it; it’s beyond shrill. I’m a huge madonna fan. Although I won’t claim she’s a better singer than Patti LuPone, obviouslly, on that one song, Madonna’s tone is more pleasant for me. I know her delivery is slow, but I think that’s more because the movie had a slower pace than the stage version. yes, Patti’s don’t cry for me Argentina is flawless, But her voice never reaches the same troublesome tone in that song. So I found it ironic that you showed that clip with such dynamic variations in tone between the two singers. Truthfully, I’m on the other side of the fence for that one.

One of the greatest atrocities every committed on a Broadway play was A Chorus Line: The Movie (or whatever the wretched thing was called). Everyone involved in making the movie (producer, director, writer, et al) should be horse-whipped and never allowed to make a movie based on a play again. At about the time the ACL movie came out, there was a running gag on SCTV where the Johnny LaRue character kept asking his bosses for "a crane shot." So, what did we see in the ACL movie, based on a play about what goes on INSIDE A THEATRE, a freakin' crane shot! And, I almost forgot ... in a story focused on dancers, they used "stunt dancers" for the actors who couldn't actually dance.

Broadway songs are catchy for a reason - there's a rapid mix between low and high notes. (Not a musician, so sorry for screwing up the description.) That also makes them very, very hard to sing. Nothing against any of the pop singers cast in these movies, but a pop song and a Broadway song are different animals, and being able to sing one doesn't automatically mean you can do the other justice.

He even told his singing teacher to tell him if she didn't think he was good enough. Andrew Lloyd Webber cast him. Rent. I first saw the musical Rent when it premiered on Broadway with Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel,, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Taye Diggs, etc, It was cheaply made, with no actual sets, just tables and chairs. It became the performers job to draw attention to the sparce settings, which they definitely did in the show. Then came the 2005 movie adaptation, with it's sets that, while they were supposed to depict a dismal Soho Manhattan during the early stages of the 1980s AIDS and HIV crisis, didn't Most notibly is the song Out Tonight, sung by Daphne Rubin-Vega on Broadway, Rosario Dawson in the movie. The song is supposed to depict the character Mimi asking a guy she'd just met to come with her to an illegal performance being done by one of his friends. In the movie she's singing it to all of the customers in the strip club that she performs at.

I know Hollywood producers always go for the big names in the movies, but they don’t do the audience any service by consistently making that choice. You’ve got Broadway actors who obviously can act and even more obviously can sing their pants off, so why wouldn’t you capitalize on the success of the Broadway adaptation by using Broadway actors who know what the hell they’re doing with the song? I hate stunt casting. It’s usually a complete failure. Take a lesson from Funny Girl. Got the amazing Barbra Streisand who was in the original cast on Bway to play the movie role and she ends up winning an Oscar for it. Julie Andrews who was in the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, was a stage actress first and ended up getting an Oscar as well. She played Liza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, but was famously not cast in the movie version in order to bring in a bigger star. Audrey Hepburn, whose singing had to be dubbed in the movie, would have soared with Julie gorgeous voice. Julie‘s Oscar for Mary Poppins was awarded the same year as My Fair Lady was released. Just don’t understand the logic behind putting lesser singers and roles meant to highlight singing.

most Broadway performances are better than the movies. In regards to the "unfortunate" hairstyle of Evan Hansen, that happens to be his natural hair. Stop hating on naturally curly haired people I also disagree completely about Gerard Butler. Pierce Brosnan was way out of his comfort zone in Mamma Mia. He even admitted as much. But he is in a movie called Evelyn, in which he plays an Irish singer who sings in pubs. He sings a couple of songs in the movie, and actually comes off very well doing it. Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Paint Your Wagon and Les Miserable should never have been made into movies. I have been in a stage production of all of these, including playing Monsieur Firmin in Phantom and Javert in Les Mis, chorus for Paint Your Wagon and stage manager for Cats. Granted they were community productions, but all audiences said we left the movies in the dirt. My son has appeared in others, such as A Chorus Line and Evita, and directed Paint Your Wagon. The plot of the movie Paint Your Wagon, is nothing like the plot for the stage production. Edit: One stage performance that did surprise me was the 1986 West End revival of Annie Get Your Gun with Suzie Quatro playing Annie Oakley, while not the best, was far better than I expected.

You're right about Liza being a much better singer than Jill Haworth. But that has caused some controversy over the years, too. The character they played, Sally Bowles, is supposed to be a third-rate singer who will never make it out of the lowdown dives of 1930's Berlin. She simply doesn't have the talent. No, Jill Haworth was not a strong singer, but that fit the part and she was deliberately cast as Sally BECAUSE she wasn't a strong singer. Liza, as we all know, is one of the powerhouse singers of all time, but a lot of criticism came from those who felt she was TOO GOOD for the part. With a voice like that, her Sally wouldn't have been singing in sleazy cabarets, but instead would have easily moved into the big time.

I own a copy of “The Complete Symphonic Recording of Les Miserables” and I love it. But couldn’t disagree on Russell Crowe more. While I love the traditional theater take on “Stars”. It is the one song that doesn’t work on broadway. Because it always performed as a belt. But this is a man that buries himself in his black and white world view. He is taking the word of a man he knows to be a scumbag and a liar because it fits that view and protects him from facing that which life has beating him over the head with. His World is a lie, because reality is an endless shade of grey. It’s a man that is near breaking and heading into the last straw situation and begging to be right and justifying that by saying the stars show that. It should never have been a belt. Because it’s that that loses the character.
