I always cry whenever I hear Picard playing that flute from the inner light

Several Voyager episodes could make this list, but the glaring error is Measure of a Man. IMHO, one of the best hours of television ever made. Even more relevant today.

I think one of the best Voyager episodes is Course: Oblivion. It doesn't have a happy ending and just leaves you gut wrenched. One of the few star trek episodes to make me cry honestly.

"All Good Things", considered by many the greatest Star Trek finale, should easily have made this list, and "The Doomsday Machine", with arguably the greatest guest performance in all of Star Trek, by the great William Windom. Many think it was Emmy worthy at the time, and it was a crime he was not nominated.

“Far Beyond the Stars,” DS9 Season 6, ep. 13. It is the greatest meta-theatrical self-deconstruction of the morals & motives of an *Entire Franchise* in one 50-minute episode. Riveting performances that explore the consequences of moral complacency, tightly-framed direction, excellent pacing, and the familiar faces tormented by self-doubt into unfamiliar characters. It aired over 20 years ago but I remember how stunned I was the first, second, and third times I watched it.

I'm having a hard time believing this list was made by fans. Trials and Tribulations, Far beyond the Stars, Year of hell, and Best of both worlds would be on any fan favorite lists.

No 'Best of Both Worlds'?! SERIOUSLY!?

Surprised to see no Voyager episodes. One I would put up there is where the Doctor has a family on the holodeck. Real sad

It has always saddened me that Enterprise was canceled. I don't know why more people didn't watch it, because it is one of the best. I considered it, from the very first episode, a great attempt at making the futuristic settings of Star Trek connect with today's world and advances in technology and society.

Not one Voyager episode!!!!! Really??????? WTF!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised Darmok didn't make the list or the measure of a man. Both are my favorite tng episodes. Also no love for Voyager?

Since not one Voyager episode was on this list all my picks are from Voyager ..... The year of hell, Basics 1and 2, futures end, Scorpion 1 and 2 and of course Endgame.

I would consider The Best of Both Worlds and The Drumhead. Picard's speech to Worf about Simon Tarses "pleading the Seventh" is, in my opinion, one of the best scenes in the series.

You forgot the Doomsday Machine, season 2 episode 6 the original series, the best Sci-Fi episode of all time.They have even done an a half hour special on You Tube about it.

Duet from DS9 remains my absolute favorite. One of my favorite episodes of television, period.

Well, I think the episode called "Sarek" from TNG is highly overlooked, very powerful acting from Patrick and Mark! So there!

I'd add Mirror Mirror from TOS. I'm surprised Magnificent Ferengi made the list. I certainly like the episode, but I'm not sure if it would crack my Top 10 DSP let alone Top 10 overall.

Duet should be on this list, just saying.

Umm, Enterprise? What about the episode Twilight, where T'pol must devotingly care for an injured Captain Archer for many years.

TNG's finale "All Good Things" should be on this list too. It was extremely well done, and clever two-parter.

"Duet" from DS9 is considered by many to be one of the best episodes of all of TV. The fact that it's not on this list is mind boggling

The visitor is one of the hardest episodes to watch.. actually I avoid it when I can. I have that kind of bond with my own dad. He's the one who got me into DS9. It's such a tearjerk

I know this is an old post, but I had to respond when I found this vid. Hands down The City On the Edge Of Forever is my top favorite, first only to "The Visitor" A perfect Shatner's line “Let's get the hell out of here”. A simply yet emotionally strong dialogue without Shatner's trademark scenery chewing and grandiose gestures. Making his personal sacrifice of letting a woman that he had fell deeply in love with to die; to save humanity; all the more poignant and heroic. Honorable mention from the same episode: McCoy: “You deliberately stopped me, Jim! I could have saved her! Do you know what you just did?!” Spock: “He knows Doctor, he knows”…. The Visitor was heartbreaking. Tony Todd gave an outstanding performance as elderly Jake. The whole premise, a father and son’s unbreakable bond. Jake sacrificing himself and possibly all that he accomplished, so that his dad could be saved. I cry everytime I see that episode!

I'd add Far Beyond the Stars to this, perhaps drop In a Mirror Darkly.

STOS "The Doomsday Machine."

You could easily fill this list with just DS9 episodes, it's just that superior.

There are so many great episodes in all the Star Treks. Too many to narrow down to 10. I'm glad to see one of my favorites made the list 'The Magnificent Ferengi" I thought that was great and funny.

"The measure of a man" from The Next Generation is one of my favorites when Picard defends Data that he he is not property of Starfleet & has the right to choose for himself even against Riker's spectacular prosecution performance with the line "and now a machine can be turned off".

I'm surprised that neither "Darmok" (TNG) nor "Far Beyond the Stars" (DS9) were on the list. "Darmok" was, to me, quintessential Star Trek. The discovery within a potential adversary of a commonality that leads to understanding, and the realisation that Captain Dathon and his crew were almost exactly the same as Picard and the Enterprise crew: explorers, willing to risk their lives for understanding and knowledge. "Far Beyond the Stars" was unusual, but brilliant. The social commentary alone was tremendous, and it showed a very different side to Trek, with a willingness to explore timely topics of racism and bigotry without shrouding them in sci-fi cloaks. Lastly - while writing about "Darmok" and its wonderful story of an enemy becoming a friend when communication is established, I was reminded of another sensational episode that should have made the list: "The Devil in the Dark" (TOS).

After reading a few posts, I have to agree that VOYAGER The Year of Hell was a glaring omission. TNG All Good Things is a very fitting conclusion to that series. It should at least have an honorable mention. Also TOS The Menagerie was awesome! It melded the Enterprise pre - Captain Kirk with the old crew Captain Pike through Spock with a court martial plus original pilot footage. I personally like TOS The Doomsday Machine. Yes I know it's just a retelling of Ahab and the Whale BUT it works!

"Tapestry" from TNG has always been one of my favorites. I also believe that there were many good Voyager episodes such as "Drone", and who could forget TOS episode "Arena"?

Very tired of everyone maligning Voyager. There were some wonderful stories told in that series. Kathryn Janeway is one of the most powerful female characters ever created. And Jeri Ryan rose so far above the T&A factor that originally brought her to the show. Love Voyager. With the exception of TOS I have rewatched the series more than any other. Enterprise was a missed opportunity with a cast who never really gelled and characters who drove me to distraction. I thoroughly enjoyed TNG but it will never surpass TOS in part because of the revolutionary nature of the original in its day. The acting on TNG vs TOS was far superior with the exception of Leonard Nimoy, of course. DS9 never really grabbed me. It was well written, complex but sometimes too heavy handed. It's the only series I never actually finished.

Inner light & the visitor both make me blub, every, single, time...

DS9: Far Beyond the Stars, not only a perfect essay about the price of bigotry, also the power of dreams. TNG: All Good Things, the hail and farewell TNG earned and deserved.

I think "Far Beyond the Stars" is one of the best episodes of Star Trek.

Tbh there is no top 10 trek ...as there so many great episodes Trek is the best TV out there it's thrilling , dramatic , sombre , comedic etc it's a sci fi that's everything in one It's ahead of the time forever and always

My favorite is The Duet from the first season of DS9.

My favorite episodes are; The Measure of a Man, Who Watches the Watchers, The Drumhead, A Matter of Time, Shuttlepod One, Judgement, Dear Doctor, The City on the Edge of Forever, and A Piece of the action. I haven't seen enough of Voyager and DS9 to be able to pick favorites.

Voyager is my favorite one. A woman as capitain, lost at delta quadrant and facing The Borgs. It's the best for me.

Definitly "The Inner Light". Thought I'm also found of the classic dual episode "The Best of Both Worlds".

I have been re-watching Enterprise on Netflix. It's been many years since seeing it, so it's as thought I'm watching it for the first time since I don't remember much. This series was underrated. It is very good. Interesting stories, well written and good acting. What I love about the new Discovery is it is very different than all the past series. It is great to see a new spin on an old theme. The target demographic of todays audience has different expectations and interests then a decade or two ago so the changes they made to capture that audience makes sense. To give a small example of how the changes in Discovery have grabbed a new audience ... my wife who has always thought all of the Star Trek series were poorly acted and 'cheesy' watches Discovery with me an actually enjoys it!

Oh, and "The Inner Light" (TNG) is definitely justified in having a place on that list. Even hearing that tiny snippet of the flute theme brought a lump to my throat, and I think I have something in my eye...

As someone who as a kid really looked up to my dad, The Visitor is genuinely painful to watch which makes it such a good episode.

The Drumhead was my favourite TNG episode. Great commentary on paranoia and Cold War hysteria.

This easily one of the best top tens of Star Trek, and I completely agree, almost. I just switch the top two.

DS9 - “Duet”. A masterpiece. (No Voyager - very telling)

STAR TREK: Discovery? Don't waste your time.

With so many wonderful episodes to choose from, a top ten is rather unfair to the one doing the ranking. Having said that, every one of the aforementioned episodes is a true classic and I cannot find real fault with any of your choices. Well done!

While I love the Original Series, I just never cared for City On The Edge Of Forever (or any of the ones involving the Earth’s past or similar worlds). My favorite is Devil In The Dark, because it shows how completely misunderstood the “monster” was,and how peaceful she really was. It was the humans who needed forgiveness... then they worked together for MUCH better results. I also loved Journey To Babel as it introduced Spock’s father and 🖖. It demonstrated what The Federation really did along with giving a glimpse into Spock’s relationship with his father and his commitment to his duties as First Officer. Plus it introduced so many great alien species! What’s not to love?

Well done on the selection. Considering the sheer number of total episodes spanning all the series I find it more than daunting to pick a top 10. Top 30, maybe :)

My personal top three: 1) In the Pale Moonlight (apparently a reference to "You ever dance with the Devil in the pale moonlight" delivered by Jack Nicholson in the 1989 Batman movie); 2) The Inner Light; and 3) Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges (DS9).

Keep this in mind everyone, Star Trek: The Original Series was going to be cancelled after the first season, but due "The City on the Edge of Forever" winning the Hugo Award, an important SCI - FI award at the time, the series continues and the rest of the Star Trek Series follow suit.

If I was making a list, I woukd have included the following: Blink of an Eye, Real Life (VOY), The Siege of AR-558, Far Beyond the Stars (DS9) to name a few. You managed to get some of my favourites on this list though already :)

Personally I'd agree with 'City On The Edge Of Forever' being in #1 position. Part of that is nostalgia from that era's story telling and part is the dilemma Kirk finds himself in (and the fact he and the audience know about the nature of that dilemma for a large part of the episode). 'In The Pale Moonlight' is also a personal favorite and thankfully shows that in war there are always consequences. Being human means being faced with the strong possibility that whatever you do there will be victims and suffering despite your best intentions.

One of the best, TNG 118 (season 5, episode 18): Cause and Effect

The visitor for me would be number one, but its a good list.

“The Doomsday Machine” and “The Ultimate Computer”. Scary in how prophetic they are turning out to be.

You say "The Magnificent Ferengi" would be the only light-hearted episode on the list, then proceed to "In a Mirror, Darkly." I would personally consider the latter to be light-hearted too. It's played out fairly straight, but also firmly tongue-in-cheek. The writers and actors were clearly just running with what they could never do on the normal Enterprise episodes and it's fantastic in that capacity. It's easy to have a blast watching it, I sure did, and while it fits well into canon, it isn't really meant to be taken seriously.

Not a single episode from Voyager?

Sorry to say that at least two Voyager episodes should have been on your list... The Equinox and Scorpion two-parters. I would put Year of Hell on the list but all that does for me is suggest at what the whole series should have been about. It just points to Voyager's amazing, but hugely wasted, premise. Basics, Timeless, Relativity and Blink of an Eye would be honourable mentions.

The Inner Light is the only Trek episode that brings a tear to my eye, when the flute is revealed at the end.

Should have known Forever would be at the top. The episode is so obvious and overwrought. There are many better TOS episodes to choose from. the rest of the list is pretty good though.

Always enjoyed the introduction of Seven of Nine, Jerri Ryan in Scorpion. Incredible action, and the music for those 2 episodes was perfect. Plus our first encounter with Species 8472 😅

Surprised "TNG The Offspring" and "The Measure of a Man" weren't on here

The Visitor DS9 is certainly the most memorable if not the best

Well I’m pleased to see TOS has made the number one spot! And garnered three spots on the list. Considering TOS is vastly outnumbered by quantity of episodes it is impressive and says a great deal for the original. However I would like to have seen “The Corbomite Maneuver”, “The Conscience of The King.”, “Mirror, Mirror”, “Space Seed”, and “Metamorphosis” on the list and maybe in the #1 spot!

Other than the original series episode, Mirror Mirror, I did not care for the mirror universe episodes. Two DS9 episodes that should have made the list are Duet which featured a fantastic performance by Harris Yulin, and The Siege of AR 558.

Only 10 choices just isn’t enough for how many good Trek episodes there are. My examples are: ‘Mirror, mirror,’ ‘Measure of a Man,’ ‘Call to Arms,’ ‘Sacrifice of Angels,’ ‘Shattered,’ ‘Year of Hell,’ ‘All Good Things,’ ‘Best of Both Worlds,’ ‘Redemption,’ ‘Equinox,’ ‘The Search,’ ‘Duet,’ ‘Waltz,’ ‘What You Leave Behind,’ and many more I’m sure.

"In a Mirror, Darkly" was the episode that got me to watch all of "Enterprise," and I'm glad I did.

#8 was "inspired" by "The Enemy Below", a WWII film about a battle between an American destroyer and a U-boat. The cloaking device was invented to parallel the surfacing of the U-boat to attack.

From this list I only agree with the choice of The Inner Light from The Next Generation, and that is probably because that happens to be my favorite episode of Star Trek the Next Generation.

How do you leave out Far Beyond the Stars DS9? Also, how can you rank Chain of Command #8 on your best TNG list, then put it on your all time greatest Star Trek episodes list? What the other 5 or so episodes ranked higher on TNG aren't good enough for the all Star Trek list?

I just recently got into Star Trek, and been binging TNG for the last few months which got me to the end of Season 6 right now. I started with it because I thought that the outdated looks from TOS wouldn`t make me able to enjoy the ST universe and therefore Roddenberrys vision to the fullest. But right now, just when i got a little frightened of the prospect that the TNG experience is over the next season (for me), i read your comments and see that every other (classic) ST series seems just to be as great as TNG, which just hypes me to start DS9 and see the events of the Dominion war.

Two of my personal favorites are both two part episodes from DS9. "In Purgatory's Shadow/By Inferno's Light," and "Favor the Bold/Sacrifice of Angels." Also I really like "The Siege of AR-558." Oh man I almost forgot about "Improbable Causes/The Die is Cast." Such a great show.

These "Best" lists are difficult to do; no one is happy with them, even if you did best 100 episodes, someone would complain about their faves not being there. So you are brave, and in for abuse. I think one should qualify with the word "MY" on such lists. Did watch Next Gen but lost interest in others here, but knew of them. And saw some of the movies, which mostly disappointed me. Saw, and have, all TOS, which I watch often, when "nothing is on TV", which is often! "Balance of Terror" is my fave and on your list. It is the one episode, in TOS, that makes maximum use of the Enterprise's weapons to destroy an enemy vessel (Romulan). So, if you like phasers and photon torpedoes, you'll like this one!! My second fave is "the Corbomite Maneuver" in which the Enterprise encounters a massive (mile in diameter) alien ship, and Kirk must use all his experience to save the crew. My third fave is "the Changling", which has one of the best politically incorrect lines of dialog, of all time, on TV. If you see it, you'll immediately know what I mean. Enjoy them all; and live long....etc. etc...
