In order to determine which US states everyone is leaving, (and moving to), we looked at what percent of total moves in each state were outbound vs inbound migration. But natural population increase / decrease and international immigration are also factors in population decline, so while you may have heard of a mass California exodus and people leaving New York, there are also a few surprises in the Top 10 Fastest Shrinking States! If so many Americans are Leaving these expensive states with high taxes though, they might have some of the worst places to live in the United States!
My biggest suggestion is to visit the best cities in these states first to decide where you want to move to and live.

As a Californian what I have noticed is alot people moved out of the big cities and into the suburbs of those cities. So traffic is just as bad as before the pandemic and the suburbs have only gotten more expensive.

The suburbs have always been expensive. Theres a reason lots of homes 20 minutes east of DT LA are still in the 5,6,7 hundred thousand range

I would recommend not going to one of the popular places like NYC, Miami, Chicago, LA, or other popular beaches and places. And visit a state like Georgia or Oregon.

PA didn't shrink, it only lost a seat bc it didn't grow at the same rate as the rest of the country. Plus I think this video is just about 2020, and the census covers a whole decade. According to the census, IL, MS, and WV are the states that actually shrank 2010-2020

Cause it didn't grow at the same rate as other states. So yeah, it didn't shrink,...but didn't really grow so that representative had to go to a state that's actually growing.

@@Melissa-wx4lu taxfoundation.org literally puts Cali in the top 5 for states people are moving out of. Cali should have made this list if the title of the video was correctly reflecting the actual content. But the video bases it's list on factors of population shrink, which includes a lot more than just people moving out of the state. Cali is still growing slightly by their birth vs death rate and also is being supported by incoming migration from outside the US.

CA grew by 2 million. Let's assume you have two people: Person A who is 6'1" Person B who is 5'9" If in one year Person A grows one inch and is now 6'2" and Person B who grows 3 inches and is now 6ft. Clearly the one who is 6'2" is still taller but the one now 6ft grew faster. At the end of the day, both grew but Person B grew faster. In this scenario, California is Person A and, let's just say, Texas is Person B

California: The problem with this formula is he's not doing numerics of people, but a percentage of the population...so CA could technically be #1, because a small percent there is far far more people then a greater percentage in Georgia, Tennessee, Oregon, Minnesota, etc.

Not so much a "problem" just a different metric. He is describing movement as a % of total population, not just total number of people. Which in my opinion is more important in understanding broader issues. A state with 40 million people wont really even feel 1 million leaving. Never under-estimate the importance of CA to the whole of America (Cali Native)

Interestingly enough, recently due to COVID, people have been moving to CT! This is mainly due to New Yorkers trying to get away from the city, but as a CT resident, I noticed that the housing market has been booming! If you sell your house now, it will most likely get sold instantly

@@robertgenn3086 contrary to what many think, illegal immigration (by going through the US-Mexico Border) is really rare to non existent, and if they do, they travelled LEGALLY to the US for work, then return to Mexico. They become illegal, not because they snuck through the border, it’s because they overstayed their Visas.

Tons of people are moving here to Washington and Idaho, mostly Spokane, Post falls and CDA. A lot of Californians and Colorado people! And it’s really affecting the ability to afford living here. I’m actually moving to Savannah, Georgia this summer.

I moved back and forth from NY State 5 times, due to family. As i got older, winter was the big reason for leaving. Great place in summer. NY State gets more snow than Alaska every year.

On Illinois taxes: yeah, they’re pretty bad. You could own a $300,000 - $350,000 house that’s not in the city and pay about $12,000 yearly in taxes in some places

Ouch. I'm in rural green/West Washington. I bought a house for $339k a couple of weeks ago and pay just over $1,600 in taxes yearly House is absolutely gorgeous. 3 years old. Huge yard. Soaking in my new tub right now. Across the road is a river with soft sand to lay and sunbathe on, and 15 minutes away is a kayak launch for a huge lake. Best of all, Amazon delivers and there is really fast reliable internet for my gamer needs. Wave is a great internet company 👌 I'm out in nature and my ping is 19ms. 100Mbps is the slowest they offer. I have two golden eagles nesting on one of the trees in my backyard. Best of all? I will hardly ever need to turn on my heater. And it's still in the 60s now. Cool and sunny. It only gets hot during August and early September. Electric bill is practically nonexistent. Concrete, WA is an Iceland/Greenland hidden gem.

East coast most expensive I'm from NYC Manhattan most expensive but not full NYC is expensive some neighborhoods are cheap then Manhattan Example Some parts of Brooklyn and Queens you can find cheap apartment The lower rent in good part of Manhattan $3000 The some money you can go some else in NYC rent huge places or pay monthly mortgage payment One day I spoke to One of random lady she and her husband move to Manhattan for job 12 years ago huge money they life was in Manhattan $6000 a monthly rent no problem with 2 children soon they find out they could work from home They move to different neighborhoods in of NYC they bought the house $900k they put $300k on money down payment $600k to go they monthly mortgage payment $4200 tax from house $8800 a year Some people make good salary they investment in house to avoid paying high rent Smart move by this people People who come NYC for work or life in Manhattan they never left Manhattan They don't know that Queens Brooklyn Bronx Staten Island existed They ignore NYC make up of Five neighborhoods ok Must understand NY State huge place Long Island is most expensive in taxes but house is cheaper so your choose Buy small house pay high tax 12k to 24k a year ok bye

Some of my coworkers live in Delaware. I live in Philadelphia....one of my coworkers actually commutes to work (I work in Philadelphia) from Maryland. I hear NJ is crazy expensive from my coworkers who live there.

@ANTOINETTE CRISCUOLO Because it is right next to NYC. ANYTHING next to NYC is going to be joked about. The closer you get to NYC or any city, the houses and such are crappy looking. But we have the shore points, and so many more beautiful homes with lots of land and lots of big bucks and lots of businesses. I use to live in upstate NY. Lots of snow and getting stuck in said snow. A little milder here, haven't had to be towed once in all my years here. They say Ben Franklin made the first NJ joke. Thanks Ben...

I'm NJ born and raised. I was sent elsewhere when I was in the Air Force and learned that there's another entire world away from the east coast. NJ is a never-ending traffic jam with wall-to-wall people 24/7 and the cost of living is ridiculous. I'll never go back to live there again.

Went to Boston in 2005 for vacation. Went back every summer between 2006 and 2014. Plan on going back this year. Absolutely love Boston and all of New England. The Celtics, Bruins, Sox, and Pats.

Democrats held power in WV for like 50 years. Republicans have only been the majority since 2012. So get your facts straight. You can't undo 50 years of damage in 9 years. And when the largest industry in your state has virtually disappeared due to heavy regulation, it's easy to see why people have had to leave. There was nothing for many of the coal miners to fall back on.

Most recently noticeable states people left are New York state and California. But this decrease started 10-20 years ago. COVID and the Great Recession just sped that process up. But since the 2000's this decline has been gradually happening. The biggest reason people move out of many of these states is because of lack of jobs for everyone and cost of living, sadly usually it's not by choice.

The pandemic is a *huge* reason for CA population decline, both from an economic standpoint, as well as a birth-rate standpoint. When the pandemic is done and over with ( likely within a year, ) CA will gain ( and likely explode in population ) once people are freely getting out, again. It isn't a coincidence that CA loses population for *first* time, in its state's history....

NYC have a lot of population growing and still holds the title as the most populous city in the US for many years.

@@CrystalClearWith8BE it's really not even close. NYC is more populated than at least half of the 50 states. No other American city is remotely close to NY.

@@southernparadise2354 My father use to live in Orlando. He had the cutest mid-1950's condo with an old fashioned swimming pool and tennis court. I especially loved the small harmless lizards darting around and huge trees. Old Orlando is very beautiful compared to the Disney crap. The old homes outside or Orlando are very interesting to look at if you're into architecture.
