Speed is such a broken stat in Gen 1. It not only determines who goes first but the chances of you dealing critical. No wonder Tauros and Persian were so good.
@leargamma4912

Persian isn't as good as Tauros. Sure, garenteed crits are nice, but since crits nullify any attack buffs, it's laughable why anyone would use persian apart from in game.

@@condog209 Jolteon isn't as good as Zapdos but it's ironically a decent enough check due to resisting Zapdos' dual STAB. Persian is basically used as a second Tauros to clean up weakened teams that Tauros has already devastated.

Same. I only learned about the physical/special split being type-based when I tried to solo my way through _Emerald_ with a Gardevoir and was wondering why Shadow Ball was doing so little damage. I played Pokemon Blue when it first came out, and I didn't learn about it until Emerald.

I would have had slowbro at 10 instead simply due to how annoying it can be once it gets an amnesia up (for those who don't know, amnesia was basically two calm minds). With its incredible defense and hp stats and a good special stat, once this thing gets going, nothing short of a razorleaf or thunderbolt crit will be breaking through.

I went to the Pokémon mall tours in ‘99 and 2000, and I battled in the Prime Cup tournaments back then. One finals match, another guy and I had Pokémon left with Double Team. Both of us used it multiple times, and neither of us could hit each other. Eventually, the rep gave us both a win, since they were timed matches…and we were stuck waiting for Struggle to come into play.

I love alakazam, but I usually prefer a starmie lead. Just personal preference though. I’ve just had more success with it personally. Alakazams psychic hits so hard though, and can at times outlast a lot of Pokémon due to its special defense being super high because special is just one stat, and with reflect. I either run psychic, thunder wave, reflect, recover, or sometimes replace reflect with seismic toss for chip damage, and I guess a more offensive alakazam. Plus he’s super fast so high crit ratio and special drops from psychic are devastating.

Most people know the missing-no glitch. Most people don't realize in that same area you can catch stuff glitched over level 100 with the stats to go along with it. So the best pokemon were actually those Ratata type and Pigeon types you could get from there. You just win with raw stats, the only downside is they sometimes don't listen to you because your badge level is always too low!

Wow no mention of Nidoking thats unexpected. Same goes for Aerodactyl who i always find fun to use. Rock/Flying with solid attack, a good special and high topspeed. Gen 1 had its balance issues. The special stat itself was a big flaw since it counted for both offence and defence. That was the reason Alakazam was such a beast or indeed Mewtwo but hey Mewtwo is the strongest pokemon ever created. After the special split Alakazam became more a glass cannon, still a big threat but not impossible to handle. Then another downside of the first generations was the attack type determines what value it used, either Attack or Sp Att. Hitmonchan for example was terrible in gen 1, high attack but its elemental punches used its abysmal special stat. Gyarados had Hyperbeam to save its usefulness but also it has a high attack and low special making its water moves underpowered. Anyways these things have been fixed and alot of first gen pokemon have seen their usefullness increase since, Not to mention the abilities and other things that been added later to keep them relevant in current generations and not to be put on the shelf or to act as dex fillers.

You could theoretically drop chansey from a team and still be competitive but not having snorlax and tauros is a much more difficult ask Why eggy over starmie? Starmie is just too versatile and that’s why he edges out eggy for #4. Rhydon is zapdos only check and the best end game sweeper in competitive play if left unchecked. This list ranks them correctly, I would only move rhydon and jynx maybe ahead of cloyster but thats the only changes i can maybe have an argument for

@@Magic_Ice yeah that one. It had a niche use in Gen 1. It had the highest speed stat in the game at the time. At least I think. I could be wrong on that, but it was pretty damn high. It’s use back then was since it almost always went first, it’s purpose was to explode on the target. It was niche in Gen 1. Outright useless nowadays

I'm always tempted to be controversial on this topic and say that Exeggutor is my choice for the best Gen 1 competitive Pokémon. Tauros is absolutely fantastic, but as true now as it was in the days of the PBS, no matter how tempted you are, you really should leave it for last. It's the best cleaner, but at the same time Persian and Dodrio can do its job, just not as well. Exeggutor on the other hand is just so disruptive during the course of the battle. Between sleep powder and Psychic as its standard moves, and explosion, double edge, mega drain as possible options, there's nothing that at least one of its threats doesn't seriously threaten. Add on to that the flexibility of even being a capable lead, Exeggutor always seems to do more for me in advancing the gamestate favourably, even if it's not as glamerous as Tauros' job.

Guys, help me out here. I'm taking part in a Pokemon tournament with a couple of friends. We are allowed to prepare 3 Pokemon up to lvl 25, nor foing beyond the 3rd arena. Then we would fight against each other, have another 30min of game play and fight each other again. We are doing this 5 times. What Pokemon should I use and which attacks should they know? Please remember, only Pokemon allowed until I hit arena 3. Thanks guys! Your help is very much appreciated!!

@@Historicutuber Its movepool is pretty barren and Fire isn't a great type in Gen 1. It still does a lot to Rhydon and Golem due to their low Special stats and a burn is punishing for them. Articuno arguably should've been since it's got the strongest Blizzards in the game. Unfortunately, its barren movepool holds it back a lot since it's hard-walled by Cloyster with the best it can muster against it being Hyper Beam as its Ice STAB is quad resisted.
@Teasquared27

No fire type should have made honorable mention. Moltres didnt even learn flamethrower, and since fire didn’t resist ice in gen 1 is weak to blizzard.

1.Keep sand attack on Eevee 2.evolve to jolteon 3. Teach thunder wave. 4. First in battle. 5 switch to mnesia slowbro after set up 6. Game done Currently playing blue kaizo n the last challenge in victory road is 2 ace trainers with 6lvl 90 in a row. Spent weeks thinkin if strategy. That was the only way
@terraSpark902
@terraSpark902 Жыл бұрын
Eh 😬 no not really... Ground type switch ins have something to say about that.. also, Slowbro is properly played in the late game, usually because with your plan, an Exeggutor or anything else with a sleep move just ruins your whole strategy. That kind of plan sounds like something that only works on the low ladder.

My top 10 Pokemon of Gen 1 no legendaries (all games): Alakazam, Rhydon, Machamp, Snorlax, Starmie, Nidoking, Gyarados, Arcanine, Clefable, Magneton
@SonnyK248
@SonnyK248 Жыл бұрын
Barring legendary Pokemon my go to gen 1 team was usually Venusaur, Arcanine, Gyarados, Nidoking, Electabuzz and Snorlax. Aside from the fact that they all looked like killers minus maybe Venusaur who got in because he's just the only grass type I liked. They were all really strong. and after i beat the elite 4 Dragonite would swap out with Nidoking. Snorlax was just the best guy to throw in when you needed to fully restore your team. Also this team kind of sucks because you have to go to the PC to get a bird to fly you around but all the flying types sucked in gen 1 so I didn't really care. Gengar is my absolute favorite Pokemon of all time but I used to restart frequently because I was a Pokemon crack addict as a kid and there's only so many times you can tell your buddy to get the trade cable out. Otherwise I'd 100% go with Gengar, Alakazam, Golem, Venusaur, Gyrados and Arcanine
