At Blue Planet we have taught thousands how to Stand Up Paddle board. We have probably seen every possible beginner mistake but here is our lineup of the top 10 most common SUP mistakes:
#10: Holding the paddle backwards and hands too close together
#9: Using only the tip of the blade and not reaching forward
#8: Holding paddle diagonally and too far away from board
#7: Falling onto the board instead of into the water
#6: Looking down instead of forward
#5: Kicking under the board when trying to get back on
#4: Not centering weight on board
#3: Drifting with the wind and not controlling the direction
#2: Going out in dangerous conditions and/or with the wrong gear
#1: Not wearing a leash
We go into detail on how to correct each of these mistakes and how it will help you develop good habits and efficient paddle technique.
Also covered: Choosing the right gear- board volume, width, length, paddle length. Beginner friendly and safe conditions. Demo boards before buying, why not wearing a leash can be deadly. Efficient paddle stroke technique. How to fall safely in to the water- not falling on board or jumping in feet first.
Special thanks to DJ for providing the no leash footage at 10:20 taken from this video: vimeo.com/128653250. Check out more of DJ's great downwind videos here:

Regarding floatation devices: In Hawaii the coast guard considers SUP's surf craft that don't require a pfd. Always wear a leash, which makes the board your floatation device. In most places in the US, a coast guard approved floatation device is required and should always be worn on the body, not tied to the board. Most drownings occur when the paddler is separated from the board, in which case a pfd tied to the board is not only useless, it gives you a false sense of security and your board will blow away even faster with a pfd tied to it.
"Mastering Standup Paddleboarding: Your Ultimate Beginner's Guide
Ready to dive into the thrilling world of standup paddleboarding (SUP)? Whether you're gliding across calm waters or catching waves, mastering the basics is essential for a successful SUP experience. Follow these expert tips to get started on your SUP journey:
Get the Right Gear: Start by choosing the right board and paddle for your skill level and preferences. Consider factors like board size, stability, and construction material. Inflatable SUPs (iSUPs) are a popular choice for beginners due to their portability and ease of storage.
Find Your Balance: Stand in the center of your board with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees slightly bent and your core engaged to help you maintain stability on the water. Practice balancing on your board in calm, flat water before attempting more challenging conditions.
Perfect Your Paddle Technique: Proper paddle technique is key to efficient paddling and maneuvering on the water. Hold your paddle with one hand on the shaft and the other on the T-grip. Dip the blade fully into the water and use your core muscles to pull it back, keeping your arms straight.
Start in Calm Water: Begin your SUP journey in calm, flat water to build your confidence and skills. Practice paddling forward, turning, and stopping before venturing into more challenging conditions like waves or currents.
Learn How to Fall: Falling off your board is a natural part of learning to SUP, so don't be afraid to take a tumble. To minimize injury, fall away from your board and try to fall flat rather than on your knees or elbows. Always wear a leash to keep your board attached to you in case of falls.
Stay Safe: Prioritize safety on the water by wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) and familiarizing yourself with local water conditions and regulations. Avoid paddling in hazardous weather or water conditions, and always paddle within your skill level.
With these tips and tricks, you'll be well on your way to mastering standup paddleboarding like a pro. So grab your board, hit the water, and enjoy the adventure of SUP!"

There is an exception to #10 - always wear a leash. In my area it's illegal to wear a leash if you're on a river. With a stronger current, you could fall off and get pinned to a bridge pier or other obstacle in the water because your board went on one side while you went on the other. I don't know if that's ever actually happened with a SUP but at least a dozen times each summer it happens with rafts tethered together that then need to be cut loose by S&R.

True, on a river you should still wear a leash but it should be a waist leash with quick release, not ankle leash.

Long time kayaker, in ignorance of SUPs, the first time I could not get up because I was looking down, and ended up using it like a kayak. Today, second time I managed to get up, looking forward did the trick. I still ended up doing two unplanned graceless dives into Lake Washington, but I am making progress. Thank you!

Just bought my first SUP and mentioned to my husband that I need to get a leash for it. "Aw, you don't need one of those" was the first thing out of his mouth. Yeah - I think I'll get a leash, thanks. Lake Superior can be pretty unforgiving at times and I'm not a strong swimmer in the first place. Thanks for the pointers, most of them are not something that would have occurred to me, especially looking ahead while getting up. Looking forward to putting your advice into action :)

Thank you for making this video. My wife and I are new and just starting out on SUP AIR boards in Lake Tahoe. Our first day we took the boards out in windy conditions in a smaller lake and pretty much learned as we went. By the end of our first day we sorted things out and taught ourselves much of what we see in videos like this one. However we struggled and would have enjoyed ourselves more had we seen these tutorial videos like this one here. Next time we go we will truly have a more enjoyable experience all thanks to these tips and our dedication to mastering this new sport.

Hi Robert, great video - which saved me from making any ignorant mistakes- today on my first SUP adventure. Going into the wind (about 20 mph and choppy on Lake Mead) for the outward leg and wearing the leash were invaluable as were the rest of the tips- got up and only fell in once and even fell away from the board and got back up as you show- so a big thanks from me.

Aloha from Australia guys. Thanks for the tips. Really appreciate your video. If I’m ever in Hawaii I’ll be sure to come and say Gday. Bought my first SUP yesterday and took it for a 20 minute paddle in some calm water on the way home. Really enjoyable. Being a Kayaker I had most parts sorted but after watching your video found that I’ve had my paddle the wrong way, I was too diagonal and I didn’t get a leash with the board. Otherwise I did everything else right. The wind picked up as I arrived so changed plans and went upwind so I’d be blown back toward my start point if it got stronger, and it did just as I was returning. I had a good position, good stance and even thought my paddle was the wrong way around I did have a good depth on the paddle. Didn’t fall at all and had an enjoyable afternoon. I plan to do a sunrise SUP so will go up to the shed and grab a PFD AS I do not have a leash yet. In the meantime I have a dog leash so I’ll use that until an eBay one arrives. Thanks guys for a really helpful video. Much appreciated. 😊🤟

I love these videos, thanks, live in the UK on the south coast, water isn't as lovely as yours, I need a wet suit (in summer)! My first time was a couple of weeks ago inspired by these videos - I fell in a lot, fell on the board, in the board, off the board, off the back of the board, over the side of the board. It was a little wavy/windy (was with a school learning) Second time I went (last week), I could stand up pretty easily (was calmer) now, I'm hooked! It's a beautiful way to explore the water. Thanks again for these videos - from other side of world. Mahalo

Good afternoon guys from Kentucky - thanks for the videos - just got my ISUP this summer. I have a small pond in my backyard and have been out on it a couple times and this was really helpful. I rowed crew in college (a LONG time ago) and some of it was intuitive but I learned a bunch already from your videos. I also can't imagine folks not using a leash...especially in "open water" (which around here would be bigger lakes or creeks or rivers) definitely a must do I would think. Also, I have now taken my Golden Retriever with me twice out on my pond and she is loving it. (I think its because she can get closer to the ducks...haha) BUT she has a PFD and a floating leash too! So if folks are taking their furry friends along, make sure you know the conditions and have them protected as well. Cheers yall!

Great video. I tried SUP for the first time and wanted to like it but had a hard time. I did more research on why it was hard and I feel the board I had was not the right size for my 210 pound body lol. While I was able to do all the things like stand up and get back on after a fall it was painful to stand and paddle. Water was washing over my feet in very calm conditions so maybe my weight was sinking the board too much. Keeping balance was too hard as my legs were shaky and it tired my legs and feet. We were on a tour with a group so I had to keep up. I wound up going on my knees but that was painful also after a while lol. On the way back I had to sit on it like if it was a kayak with my legs raised on the sides. I could play tennis for 2 hours a day with no problem so out of shape can't be the problem. I would try again with a larger board and no tour.

That makes a great deal of sense with regard of falling off and also with the ankle leash as well. Also getting back onto the board would require you alongside the board and not with your legs or feet under the board. Pulling yourself onboard and kicking feet out back of you - it is, by far ! The better strategy for that reason! I have been absorbing the information you have given in this. I do study things closely. Also! Getting up and standing on the board. I tried to stand up on the board, last Sunday of the 17th July. And almost went overboard. Looking up and forward is a much better option to do so! I looked naturally down at my feet. Getting into the centre point of the board. I'm better off keeping both feet at 20 inches from each other. So I will give it a further go on Friday the 29th of this month. Assuming that the weather behaves itself! The board is about 32 inches wide at that central point. I should point out that my first instance was in the Floating Harbour in the centre of Bristol, in May 2021. And because of medical diagnosis was postponed until after June of this year. My second go was at the Marine lake at Clevedon in North Somerset And also, so was my third go in July of this year. I am looking forward to my fourth go. And hopefully thanks to advice from yourself in Hawaii and from those in Britain. I should crack it! I hope to be successful in standing up on the board - this time in question. 🤞 Fingers crossed - indeed! One very slight tweak. To the 20 inch notion. I will add another inch or two to that. Keeping it between a clearance of between 6 and 8 inch clearance on either side. I'm determined to stand up on the board. I will do it. This time.

Sounds like you are soaking up the information, good, now you just need time on the water and lots of practice and you will get a little better every time you go out. A wide stance is helpful, get your feet as close to the rails as you comfortably can.

Oh yes! One other thing! No exuberant celebrations of doing it - either! That's the way of getting up and then scuppering it and falling in. I'll save those celebration until I get off the board. So no waggling the oar above the head. I'm wise enough to do so in this way.

Since our neighbours on vacation by a lake in Canada last year were having so much fun with their SUPs, I had been toying with the idea of getting my own board. I purchased one this summer and since then I've become kinda addicted. It really is so much fun, both relaxation and practise in the nature. I use it on lakes and I don't wanna miss it anymore... I'll be missing it in winter time here in Germany 😊 The water temperatures are already pretty cold, 13/14°C, but I always use a leash, also a waterproof bag lies on the board so I may use it as a life saving equipment and I wear neopren clothes. But I hope not to fall into the cold water anyway 😊 You just need to concentrate...

I’m a beginner, but the only mistake I was making, is holding the paddle wrong. I’m very good at paddle boarding since my first time, I was the only one capable of standing up, but I still feel like this video is very educational for ppl who think they know how to paddle (And it low key made me realize common sense, is not that common😐) nice video tho!

Regarding holding the paddle backwards, nobody ever mentions the top grip is WAY more comfortable when you hold it the right way. The way many grips are designed, it will dig into your palm and be uncomfortable. When they hold it the right way, it's a lot more comfortable--this should be the teaching point. Also...I made a paddle board video from Austin! Check it out
@blueplanetsurf
@blueplanetsurf 4 жыл бұрын
True the handle is uncomfortable if held backward but on adjustable paddles the handle can often be rotated so it is not always a reliable indicator. I always like to explain why it should be held with the blade angled forward.
