I think people need to stop trying to preserve the ways our elders lived. It's 2022 it's time to evolve move on from religion dogma god spirituality or whatever and just let things be. Not get offended or upset and just accept life for what it is a bunch of apes on a rock in space. We're all human beings also we should stop caring about the actions of others unless there hurting people.

I feel like little kids who wouldn't connect with the themes anyway would have all this go over them... but 12+, definitely not and likely 9+ will get the vast majority of this too. Even kiddos who seem very much childlike still understand a lot of this. And PLEASE do not blame Mei and her lack of hiding what is normal and healthy for her mother's irrational behavior. That's victim blaming. And what we should be normalizing is natural bodily functions not being taboo or needing euphemisms. Mei gets her period. She menstruates. There is nothing shameful or dirty about this. I get that the director was heavily influenced by her own upbringing, but I really do hope Pixar goes further in the future. Lots of ground was gained with this, but there's still so much more to gain when it comes to female body acceptance and menstruation.

So if Mei was 13 at the beginning of 2002, it would mean she was likely born in 1988. 8 is a lucky number and dragon is a lucky birth animal ( 1988 was both) Ming literally had her one child at the luckiest point she could. That's the kind of thing I think about.

As a teen who watched this, definitely not just adults and "people below the drinking age" understood some of these references. Some of them, I'll admit, went over my head. But most of these I think both me and my friends got. Also, current 8th graders do have some idea of how to make money. At least some of my friends did. I think the menstruation scene DEFINITELY wasn't just for adults, but also to introduce it to kids, too. I loved this movie and agree there are a lot of aspects that are directed towards adults, but I think a lot of items on this list are intended to introduce complex concepts to kids and connect with teens.

I also loved that. Her friends were Korean, African American (or mixed, point is it doesn’t matter), and Caucasian. The fact that Mei is Chinese comes into play only because her family happens to run a family business that involves their temple, and I do like that they show the traditions of another culture but in a way that it’s just that family’s life, it’s not all “Mei is special cuz she is Chinese”.

not every disney/pixar movie is meant for young children. the fact that this one comes with a PG-13 rating tells you that it is meant for preteens and up. if you choose to have your 4 or 5 year old watch it, they won't understand anything except big furry panda. personally, i love this movie. the mother - daughter dynamics are very well represented, no matter your background. i mean, i LOVE grandma and her squad coming in to save the day! and i love that everyone seemed to be cool with this giant red panda/teenage girl running around their town, at least until she actually hurt someone. overall, it seemed like another incredibly emotional deep dive from pixar, handled with their trademark messy sensitivity. 💕

I've spent most of the last 5 years reminding my friends who reproduced that. "you did that at that age too" and "we were soooo much worse!" and "and? We had X/did Y/and nearly A with Z and here we are... no worse for it." Ultimately, parents usually don't give their kids enough credit for what they learn at school/learn online/learn from their parents. Like LOTS of kids did this then. And that was in the Deep South, I'm sure kids in smarter environments had even more sophisticated stuff

I like that Disney is actually talking about real life issues instead of the cutesy fictional stuff. When I was in elementary school, we talked about this in the 4th grade during health class. They even separated the boys and the girls in different rooms and showed us films. Some kids started in elementary school around 10, I started when I was 11, so hopefully most kids in middle school already knew about this. I like the fact that they showed her using deodorant as well. Kids that age (actually some in my class needed it in the 3rd grade) need deodorant to help prevent body odors as they go through puberty.

I believe this might be a reference to the type of language that’s still used to talk about periods in an indirect way. I live in the U.S. and the general sex education system slim to none and what you do get is mostly the talk of ‘Your body is changing and you’ll start getting feelings’ but it can vary from being told those feelings are bad, don’t act on them to not even discussing what those feelings are. It reminds me of a King of the Hill episode where Peggy is supposed to teach the Sex Ed class and she was talking about the “Loveliness of Woman” book her mom gave her and all it had were pictures of flowers.

@@sarcasticallyrearranged For one reason or another, puberty is a really taboo topic, and taboos come with euphemisms and epithets no matter the subject matter. Specifically in relation to puberty, it can be a frustrating or borderline damaging practice, but it'll take time to die out even if more people start using more accurate terms. I think Gen Z is going to be better at that than previous generations, but we'll have to see how Generation Alpha turns out in that regard before making a judgement call
@Chaotic_Pixie

@@amethyst_cat9532 nothing borderline about it. We have proof via copious research over decades that tells us that children who don't know the proper terms for their body parts are 1. more likely to be sexually abused and 2. less likely to report it. We also have proof that children AND adults who are uncomfortable (even if they know the proper terms) using those terms are less likely to seek medical advice/care when necessary. I'd argue Millennials are kicking butt at raising their kids and making sure their armed with knowledge. Keep in mind, Mei's mother is either a young Boomer. This film is set in 1998.

Just a response from a Gen X mom (1968) that had no support or knowledge beforehand but made very sure that I talked to my millennial daughter (1992) about periods and everything else biological starting when she was 6 and letting her tell me when she wanted to know more. My mom and I don't have a good relationship. My daughter and I (who's 29 now) are great friends and talk about anything and everything in her life, including sex. Something else that I will mention is that girls have been hitting puberty earlier and earlier with each generation, at least from the millennials but maybe before. It's because of the microplastics in our systems now that mimic hormones. It's causing girls to hit hormones earlier than they normally would have. In previous generations, 13 would have been normal for a girl to get her period and if the directors are all older they may not know that the age is moving younger. It's just a thought on why they put her at 13.

The dad's reaction when he realizes his daughter reached puberty. Poor dude, he is seeing his life flash before his eyes. 😅. Maybe memories of his wife having p.m.s, maybe he has sisters & they were difficult to deal with... now his baby girl has reached that state.

And this is why.. I have so much respect for Pixar! Disney movies do portray some serious topics in their movies, but ultimately: It’s Pixar that does an amazing job on this!! They don’t shy away from these kinds of realistic topics and this movie became another prime example!! Good job Pixar.. You’ve done it again!! ❤️❤️❤️ (Also I know that Pixar is Disney… but normal Disney movies won’t do some things that Pixar does… still respect both studios and movies ❤️)

Watched this with my niece (8) earlier today. She was like “why does she give her pads? And what ARE pads?” She relies on me to be honest with her but this was one lesson I couldn’t give. Not because I didn’t have the words or info. Just didn’t wanna steal such an important moment from my sister.

I used to nanny kids, both girls. One was 12 and the other 9. One day the 12 year old said something about her friend getting her period. The 9 year old piped and asked what a period was. Her sister just laughed and I was just like “uhhhhh…” I didn’t have a problem with explaining it to her. After all I’m a woman so I get them, too. And I think it’s extremely important for girls to know what it is from a very early age so that they’re prepared and aren’t scared when it happens, but I knew it wasn’t my place. I just told her that was an important conversation she needed to have with her mom. She begged and begged for me to tell her but I just kept saying “Ask your mom, ok?” She was not happy lol.

@@beauxanges 8 years old is the perfect time to talk about it though. My sister got hers at 8 and medical experts say the NORMAL age for a period is between 8 and 12 years old. Girls should still be having fun and can still be sweet and young even if they get their periods at 8 years old.

This film was so good to watch, brought back a lot of memories growing up and being with my friends and fangirling over boy bands. I wish this movie was around when I was younger it feels so relatable and honestly I hope some parents do let their children watch it and not be shy about the topics, whether it's boy or girl.

I wished Disney and Pixar included in their trailers that this movie was rated PG to avoid the defensive parents creating a hate train on this film. Obviously, this movie is not for kids but rather for those coming of age and teens already. Though the PG warning is in Disney+, I'm sure a lot of parents didn't see that and did not expect topics such as body changes and menstruation to be tackled from a Disney-Pixar movie (which everybody assumes that every movie they will make will always be for kids like they always do.)
@Wiiguy1606
@Wiiguy1606 2 жыл бұрын
I agree a PG movie is supposed to represent parental guidance suggested meaning the movie might contain something that children might not understand and so they might want to watch with a parent. A G rating in the general audience is and therefore has nothing that offensive that could be viewed by anyone no problem And yet for a while it was like Hollywood believed that any movie that gets the G rating, nobody's going to bother watch him because it's only for children or grandparents, or babies, which is missing the meaning of the original rating Heck The Hunchback of Notre Dame from Disney in 1996 got a g rating despite the fact that there was a villain literally singing about how he lusts over a woman that's part of a group that he considers outside his law and that if he couldn't have her, the fires of Hell itself will. In fact there have been several films trying to keep a PG rating even though it's literally not that content offensive or maybe a strong word thrown in out of nowhere just to avoid the dreaded G rating

For me the movie brought a good throwback to middleschool memories, it's fun and also since it's restricted to 9+ y.o audience I view it to be appropriate enough After all the *average* age to start puberty is around 10-11 (for females in birth) (while males in birth hit it at around 12-13) [having it late or early is normal we all got those times] Comes the Hormones that mess up your thinking and gaining interest about relationships and beyond. Which in the end is all normal And watching it with parents is helping because parents can always explain things that get confusing After all they are the first people that you go to when you have some questions about your body (and I personally encourage parents to talk with their children and not shy away from a simple question like "where do babies come from?" cause kids are much more capable to understand) There is an age for everything of course, which means you don't have to go bold and talk to your kid with "adult language" just explain things simple. That's the point of biology after all you gotta learn at some point. (funny enough I can't count on school to teach me about puberty body change and all because sex education was always a taboo in my country and they're not changing anytime soon)
