Big Bang Theory had a few moments. Like when Leonard confronted his cold psychiatrist mother about his need for parental love. Or when Sheldon told Leonard he is aware of how difficult he is to work with, given that people on the Autism spectrum can be notoriously stubborn and have difficulty understanding emotions, having someone like Sheldon, who clearly exhibits all the symptoms for Asperger's syndrome, openly admit to being aware of how other's perceive his behavior is monumental. And not to mention, Raj's selective mutism in the first few seasons. As Dr Beverly Hofstader noted, selective mutism is an incredibly rare psychological condition, it can be linked to anxiety since Raj has mentioned several times about how nervous he gets when trying to talk to women. It is mostly played for laughs, but the implications it had on Penny, when he actually spoke to her without being drunk, she felt so moved that he finally had the confidence to speak to her without needing alcohol.

Oh yes Michael J Fox was AMAZING on Scrubs! I also thought not only Bea Arthur but the entire cast especially Estelle Getty were incredible in the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome story, as well as Betty White in the AIDS testing and the addiction storylines. Dorothy giving that monologue at the end to Dr Bud the spud was so righteous ❤

I just found out I was a level 1 on the autism spectrum, I felt somewhat relieved to have an explanation why I struggled for so long in social issues, eye contact, loud noises, food texture. But I tell my parents their response is ‘oh level 1 so you’re just like everybody else’. Even though I know they meant well, being told that made me feel like they belittled something I took comfort in. I currently deal with anxiety and depression along with my social issues but I’ve done so good a job at seeming fine and normal, they don’t believe there’s anything going on with me. There’s an idea in everyone’s head what someone with autism, anxiety, depression looks or acts like. If you’ve done a job of masking it, people believe you’re overreacting. It’s only just now that people are feeling more comfortable to be more open with their mental health issues. ‘Oh but don’t go telling anyone, or mentioning it, that’s something you keep to yourself deep down’ it’s just to make sure it doesn’t hurt job opportunities, or your image…..at least that’s what I get told constantly.

Oh boy, y'all did the Golden Girls wrong, at least with Sick and Tired Part 1 and 2. You literally said what the real issue is, which is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is BIOLOGICAL, NOT MENTAL! They even make that explicitly clear in the episode! In that section where she gets dismissed by the doctor, you conviently left out the part where Dorothy whips out two letters from psychologists she went to, who ascertained that her symptoms were not mental, rather they were physical Hell, the Asian doctor at the end even said they'd have to take some blood samples so they would know for sure, for sure that Dorothy had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Real disappointed, especially since a better example would've been Rose having a breakdown and being constantly paranoid after their house was broken into in Season 1, or even her depression when she's trying to find a new job, but nobody's willing to hire her because she's old, also in Season 1!

I appreciate what you say but what is so powerful about this episode is that Dorothy FELT that she was "crazy" because she couldn't get a proper diagnosis for her physical ailment. I think the point they make here is that mental health IS physical and biological but that the connection can be missed by physicians, especially at the time when this episode aired since mental health was not discussed as openly then as it is today.
@minilea144
@minilea144 Жыл бұрын
Nah, the CFS should be included. Granted, they left out some points, they cant spend all upload on it, the overall point was seen to me. The other episodes with Rose are more common than CFS. CFS is still not as recognized today and that episode was over 30 years ago. Even showing this glimpse as an example may have helped someone who is going through the same thing

I love when TV shows or movies tackle mental health issues such as OCD, Autism, PTSD, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. One condition I wish was talked about more would be Tourettes Syndrome, I haven't really seen it represented in a positive, awareness, light, outside of the movie "Front Of The Class" which I highly recommend! But that is one condition I just wish more awareness was brought too it, the few times I've seen it in TV shows it's usually used as something to make fun of people. And I wish that would change, and yes this is coming from someone who has TS!

The Golden Girls episodes were very good and are worth people being aware of, but it’s a bit upsetting to see it on this list. Many sufferers of Chronic Fatigue syndrome are told it is a mental disorder that they can overcome through exercise and other methods, whereas it’s actually a physical biological disorder that means exercise can be harmful. It’s good to talk about the episodes but it’s potentially harmful to frame it as a mental health issue
@minilea144
@minilea144 Жыл бұрын
People ie Drs. still dont technically know what it is. One country calls it biological another calls it mental. It's the same as addiction. Some would argue it's biological while others say it's mental. It should be on the list. Theres nothing wrong with calling it a mental health issue. Since many that fall under that category exist and food and rigorous exercise aren't the answer for those either, like bipolar or OCD. Mental health doesnt mean take pills and youre fixed or sing Kumbaya and youre fine. It's really an exploration of your whole body. The balance and imbalance of it. If people would stop acting like putting something in that bracket means there's something wrong withtheir brain, people would be less ashamed about talking within that category.

My sister wound up admitted to a psychiatric ward for a few days with severe PPD verging on psychosis a couple months after her son was born. She had a breakdown and was taken. Everything is great now and my nephew is 5, but it was a scary time for a bit.

For real...that part where Penelope is telling her therapy group about her mom's reaction to therapy really hit home for me, because growing up in a culture like hers, one of the first things you're taught is that you don't discuss things like that out in the open and just sweep it all under the rug, and it's hard to break past that stigma and be willing to normalize mental health

I love how this list shows how depression can take many forms and be dealt with in a variety of ways. One of the few shows I'd add to this list as either an entry or even as an honorable mention is.... House. And not just because of depression. House had a breakdown that had him sent for psychiatric help. It's been years since I watched the show, but I remember thinking that he ought to try and do a self-diagnosis on himself to explain why he behaves the way he does. His manner of coping was self-destructive and socially damaging. It suggests the damage depression can cause if left undiagnosed and untreated.

PTSD, Drug and Alcohol Addiction or any other type of Mental health disorder. The bad thing about it we are labeled and treated most times as outcasts and people like me who deal with Mental health issues I was treated like a outcast from even my own family and they're the ones who in many ways caused my mental illness but today I'm stronger than ever but I still counsel but I don't live in the past because it's all water under the bridge. The worst thing about mental illness is when something happens such as a mass shooting the first thing most people think the person was mentally ill but what people don't know is that when we are born in this society it is society that most times teaches us how to hate not mental illness all the time it's like having a first impression of someone when you realize that we're wrong about that person just think about it and these sitcoms helped us realize that we need to make changes

It may start out as a choice, but it eventually becomes a disease because your mind and your body get conditioned to need more of whatever substance you're taking, and just like with other mental illnesses, people don't want to admit even to themselves that they have a problem, much less tell other people they need help, and it's not an easy cycle to break
