Back in the 70's, my dad bought and East German with probably the worst name I have ever heard for a car, the Wartburg! It's failings didn't end there however. This monstrosity of a car (ours was a horrible mustard/beige colour), had a 3 cylinder two-stroke engine, which meant that whenever you filled it up, you had to buy a bottle of 2-stroke oil and pour that into the tank too. As you can imagine, the exhaust from this thing was toxic, and I believe that was what eventually stopped the UK government from allowing them to be imported. The interior was plastic throughout and barely fitted together. The most alarming thing about this car, which had a manual (stick shift) gearbox, was the inclusion of free-wheeling like a pushbike. This meant that, going downhill the engine had no braking effect at all. If the wheels were going faster than the engine, the drive chain was disengaged until you slowed to a speed where the engine caught up with the wheels. Living in a fairly hilly area, it was terrifying freewheeling down a steep, windy, hill reliant on only the Wartburg's fairly poor footbrake. Fortunately, the build quality was so poor that the bodywork dissolved to rust within just a few years and, much to my relief, my dad bought a crappy little Nissan which by comparison was a limo!

Fuck it. I still want a Delorean, and it better come with a kilo of cocaine in the trunk.

A friend of mine many years ago bought a '71 Vega. I was scared every time I rode in that thing. I always joked that he should have a bus schedule in the glove box. The aluminum block 2.3L inline four was absolutely horrible. I had one in a '77 Chevy Monza. No power, block prone to warping and cracking. Also, the Chrysler K cars from the '80s should have made this list.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Aztek with over 308,000 miles, and it still doesn't burn oil. It is still my daily driver, I commute 70 miles / day, to/from work. In my book, reliability, dependability and its usefulness are what REALLY counts.

I still have my Yugo! I just have to kick the left rear tire to start it! Raining? Turn on the windshield wipers to get the radio!

My first car was a 77 Chevy Vega Hatchback, puke brown. Admittedly I got it used (as in Rode Hard and put away Wet) but still it was a nightmare. There were only two good things about that car, it got great gas-mileage (when it ran) and it was absolutely guaranteed never to get stolen! I even tested that out once, one night I parked the car on the street (not a good street). left the keys in the ignition, the door cracked open, and a sign on the roof saying "Steal Me!". Next morning I came out and sure enough, somebody stole the sign.

We actually had three Pintos at one time or another. They were all just used locally for commuting, but they gave us good service. We never got hit in the rear, though. LOL

Yup. I learned to drive in my parents’ Pinto, and then my first car (which I bought in 1987) was a 1976 Vega. I can attest to the oil burning from the crappy aluminum block. I could drive the 200 km (125 miles) from Toronto to Kingston on less than a third a tank of gas, but I’d burn through 2 litres (2 quarts) of oil! The good news? I only paid my neighbour $50 for the Vega so I loved it!

The Lexus SC 430 was well built and reliable so although it was a miss it’s defiantly NOT the worst car of all time.

Sorry, but how is the first gen Toyota Prius not on here? ...It promised eco friendly blah blah blah, but the process of making one car did more damage to the environment than producing 20 normal cars, and its promise of 50 - 60 MPG was a lie, actual real life testing proved that it would struggle to get more than 35 MPG....and thats just amongst some of the flaws

Why the hate for the Pinto? Statistically it wasn't any more dangerous than any other small car at the time. The exploding gas tanks were freak accidents: 27 cases (maybe) out of 1.5 MILLION cars.

A neighbor,when I was in junior high,briefly owned a used Vega. I think it was dark green. It's sister model was the Aster. Funny think about that clip: I think that marks the first time I've seen a Vega wagon. Then again,I probably just don't remember them. One of the brothers of the same neighbor once owned a Soviet car called the Lada,another hunk of junk. It and a Yugoslav contemporary called the Yugo should be on this list.

I think it's funny when she says Yugo lacked ingenuity by still using carburetors as late as 1990. The last carbureted vehicle sold in the U.S. market was a Subaru Justy. Even though the Justy was still optioned with fuel injection starting as early as 1989, the carb'd version actually exceeded emissions standards and sold as late as 1992. It also had nearly the same output as it's injected sibling. The fact that the Justy had 80% more hp than the Yugo in a smaller displacement engine AND more than double the fuel economy tells me that still took a lot of ingenuity. Yugo just wasn't trying. And when the Metro/Swift, Festiva, Charade, and the Justy all came up, Yugo didn't stand a chance. Yes, they were ALL short-lived models, but they helped propel the subcompact market forward.

I agree with this video for the most part, but I would put the Vega closer to #1 then it is. My sister had a 76 Mustang Cobra with a 302 and the only thing wrong with it was the trans. For the Pinto it was not only car that had the gas tank between the bumper and rear end. It was just the one that got all the blame. Other cars filled the the tank from the rear, like the chevy camero.

The Vega was just about the biggest piece of shit that ever prowled the roads. A kid I knew in high school had one, and it was a running joke about what went wrong with the car that week. It finally caught fire and burned up in the school parking lot. What a piece of shit.

The Vega had an aluminum engine with aluminum cylinder walls hardened with silicone which seemed to have a life expectancy of about 25,000 miles. The front fenders tended to rust out within a year (GM was replacing fenders for free). One of the top car magazines selected the Vega as "Car of the Year" when it first came out. As for the Pinto, all cars at that time had the gas tank in a similar location. The worst lawsuit was due to an accident where a full size car slammed into the back of a stopped Pinto at 60 mph causing the gas tank to explode. The impact disabled the passengers who were unable to exit the car as it burned. The impact alone probably would have killed them as there was very little in the rear of the small car to cushion the blow.
