Brendan Schaub at #1 is a no brainer

I met Dane Cook in college when his Tourgasn tour came to Tulane. He was standing outside McAlister auditorium smoking a cigarette after everyone had left, and I was walking back to my dorm from the gym. Being a big fan at the time, I walked up just to say hi and say "Great show tonight." He looked me in the eye and shook my hand and asked where I was from and how I liked school, etc... I know that doesn't sound like anything special, but I was just a random kid and he didn't have to say anything to me, let alone engage me in conversation. I don't care what anybody says about him, he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I also met Mark Normand after a comedy show before he blew up, and he was extremely nice to everyone too.

Here’s the thing with Carlos Mencia, it wasn’t that he stole jokes from famous comedians, he would bring up and coming comedians on the road. Let them open for him. If he liked any jokes, the following night he would open with their jokes. And in a documentary twenty years he admitted point blank. Check out a clip from Opie and Anthony with Patrice O’Neal where they play that clip

Part of the issue with unfunny comedians is when their is a media campaign behind them with someone constantly telling you how funny they are… “if someone has to tell you something about themselves it’s usually not true”… I live in Philly and on the radio station 94.1 WYSP there’s a local “comedian” Joe Conklin… the radio station is a sports talk station that is constantly pushing this guy, advertising his standup, playing his bit on air, and overly hyping up and laughing at his terrible jokes and impressions. They never stop telling you HOW FUNNY this guy is, which just takes a guy who is you thought wasn’t funny and turns him into a guy who isn’t funny and now you hate.

I've never understood the popularity of Jerry Seinfeld. I've never found him funny.

I'll admit that I was prime age for the rise of Dane Cook. I saw that first night he was on comedy central when it originally aired and the xenomorph impression had me cracking up. Today I can understand why he's considered a hack comedian, but hearing his stuff does bring back some great memories. So thanks, Dane.

The greats seem to be having a conversation with the audience, whereas Rogan is putting on a one-man show... And because he's putting so much effort into weak material, he just comes across as a total hack.. I have a theory that Rogan only broke into Hollywood because producers saw him as the next Tony Danza...

Joe Rogan's bit about technology where he talks about how people act like we're smart when only a few of us is and rely on other people's invention "if I send you out in the middle of nowhere, how long before you send me an email" or whatever it is, is actually so true and pretty funny. Apart from that I've never seen him as a "comedian" I do understand however that he's influential in that scene with his club in Austin etc. But yeah, that technology bit is the only time I haven't been annoyed by his stand up and it's actually a pretty good bit.

Joe isn't a bad comic. he's average and happens to be super famous for something else. That's kinda true for most people on the list. Cook isn't a bad comic either, he just has a style that resonates with the same people who enjoy watching trashy Sitcoms. He's still probably the best at that particular brand of comedy. I don't like it but he's good at what he does. And Ellen is a legitimately good comic who happens to be a shitty person who has had a shit sitcom and a boring talk show watched mostly by housewives. I also don't think Crowder is a comic. He's a talking head with a podcast who sometimes thinks he's funny because he yells loudly.

I remember that youtube pushed Kreischers machine story to me for weeks and I finally watched it at some point and I was baffled how lame it was. Fast forward some months and I see that the video now has more than 20 mil views and it gets produced into a movie lol I don't understand the world.

genuine question, PC: what is the issue with someone getting into political commentary, comedian or otherwise? Isn't it the right of any citizen of a democracy, no matter their political stance, to try to not only inform themselves of the politics of their nation and abroad, but also enter the political discussion sphere if they feel they are qualified enough to speak on the matter? Sure, there are people that are more informed than others, especially those who make politics a career choice, but I'd argue that the notion of someone being told they are not allowed to speak on the very things that affect all of us in our daily lives is a dangerous notion to maintain. And what's more, comedy is and always has been tied to politics through its application of criticism, social consciousness, and defiance of the status quo, among other attributes. I'm not saying a comedian deserves more of a voice than a non-comedian in the political sphere, but let's not pretend that political discourse comes out of nowhere with these comedians -- it's literally a part of their job already; they're just applying it to a more serious venue/audience at times. If their takes are bad, fine, let them have bad takes and we can criticize the points they make accordingly. But saying they aren't allowed to even speak on the issues that we all face is just an intellectually dishonest argument and take to have. Last point, more of a personal one: it's weird to say "I don't like comedians who use their personal identity or upbringing as their comedy" or that those comedians are effectively hacks. Like... that's half of what comedy is. Half is what someone says about themselves and their perspectives and upbringings, the other half on the world we live in the and the state of things. Dunno what you were expecting "good comedy" to be but you're throwing out half of all comedy in one misguided take, I feel. But I get this was a subjective point you made, so take of that opinion what you will. I enjoy the channel nonetheless, thanks for keeping the masses informed on the mediocre-but-somehow-famous (in my opinion) podcast comedians and their ilk.

I really like him as a MMA commentator and a podcaster. I didn't even know that he was a comedian until he said that he was one on his podcast a few years ago. I don't find his comedy funny.

I always thought of Dane Cook as an entertainer more than an out an out comedian. His delivery and stage presence was always entertaining even if I wasn’t laughing at the time. I think he’s a lot better than some comedians and he’s great in interviews. I think history is being a little more kind in recent years. Dude sold out the garden like it was nothing a couple of times over. He must have been on to something.
