When will you do the top 10 of emerging "old" painters? With lifespan extending more and more, many people begin to paint in their 50's, once you have the time and money..but it seems that "emerging" is only in your 20's, while if you start in your 50's you still have 30 or more years to paint...

Why does age have anything to do with it!! The art world continues to have this problem with ageism! As it does with racism and sexism!
@contemporaryartissue
@contemporaryartissue 28 күн бұрын
Age is a factor in the same way as painting for this selection. It can be interesting to see what art the ultra-contemporary generation creates, especially as all artists from the previous selection about painting today were born between 1935 and 1955. So saying this list is ageism is similar to saying this video is against sculptors, it is simply a different perspective to learn more about art today. Thank you for tuning in!
@carlkligerman1981

Actually I would argue that art is one of the very few fields in which being older is a measurable advantage! It’s a category, and ‘ultra’ contemporary is a category I’m quite sure I’ve never heard of, not an agist means by which to delegitimatise the production of work by those born before 1975. As for racism and sexism if you are white and male you may have a point (in as much as you are pretty much shit out of luck if you happen to be either by genetic accident and are looking to make contemporary work) otherwise I am sure I don’t know what you are talking about, the artworld’s current obsession with representation and revisionism expressly tackles both!

Very inclusive and slightly diverse and all those things we are pressed to exteriorizenow, but the art itself is not very diverse. Lots of photorealistic depictions of the body,, lots of patters, closer to illustration than painting, and so on. But hey, the first and the last artists almost inspired me.

@Peter-733 28 күн бұрын
what do you mean by patters? By photo realistic you mean its obvious it was painted from a photograph? I didnt see any that looked particularly accurate. I had the same impression not very inspiring, but in my experience I really find that need to see contemporary paintings in real life or properly to make a judgment on them. Of course its very hit and miss. Still im often surprised at what resonates with me

I ask this question as a young black artist with ambitions of showing in major galleries one day: Is a black artist’s work less likely to be accepted in the “Art World” if it doesn’t relate to blackness, black history, colonialism, black trauma, etc.? I don’t draw any inspiration from those topics and my blackness doesn’t show itself in my work, but I noticed that the majority of black artists who get recognized by the Art World draw inspiration from and incorporate these themes in their work. Would it be beneficial for my art career to incorporate those themes of blackness into my art?

Some curators do indeed have the tendency to politicize the artwork by people of color, especially when they are depicting people of color. I believe the case of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a perfect example. However, there are-as MsRedjay rightfully points out-numerous artists of color who create non-political art, and this number will continue to increase in my opinion. Be yourself!
@chrislethbridge1759
@chrislethbridge1759 26 күн бұрын
I think you ask an important question here. I once worked for a funded gallery that got taken to task by our Arts Council for failing to show artists of colour. When the director pointed out there were a number of artists of colour in our programme but that they were chosen to be consistent with the gallery’s curatorial ethos, she was told they were ‘the wrong type of black artist’ - meaning they were not artists working on themes of identity, race, colonialism etc (and this was many years ago). I have also encountered young black art students who have been told by their (white) lecturers the above were the themes they ‘should’ be exploring. Visiting publicly funded galleries in the the UK today one is fed a constant diet of identitarianism. Like it or not, this is a part of contemporary cultural discourse and therefore deserves to be seen and discussed. But to the exclusion of all else? And to justify the inclusion of mediocrity? The same applies to ‘queer’ artists (I speak as one). I see much that trades in cliche and lazy stereotype. But ‘queer’ artists who are not making ‘queer art’? They can forget it!

An interesting video and quite a mixed bag (some excellent, some not so imo). I’d suggest taking a look at Oli Epp. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of these rankings or of Artfacts. It can only give the most superficial assessment of an artist’s merit. I recognise that ‘identity’ is very much a part of current discourse - and perhaps of greater importance to a younger generation. So it deserves exposure and scrutiny, but ultimately I personally find it a bit of a self absorbed dead end. I’m afraid when someone starts banging on to me about ‘their identity’, my inner reaction is usually ‘so what, we all have one, why should I care?!’. But each to their own!

I found something to like in all these artists. It's interesting that most of these artists are figurative in various ways and deal with gender and race as well as their personal histories. I prefer the more indirect approach of Oscar Murrilo from this group. i also liked Rashid Johnson and Camille Henrot. I'm aware there are other complex issues at play with all these artists but gender and race seem to play a dominant role. I guess they are reflecting modern preoccupation with gender and race but I find it quite limiting as there are many more artistic avenues to go down. I'm not really that well up on young contemporary painters but I'd like to put forward Katie Paterson as an artist who looks beyond the human as well as how we relate to our world within the context of geological time, although I'm aware she's a Conceptual artist, not a a painter.

I think this is a excellent line-up. However what about James Jean? What does he fit in the category of art? His career is by far the most appealing. He created his world and also blurred the lines between commercial and fine art! And his career looks more attractive because he looks free to create with all elements of art both sculptures, prints, and originals. On top of this his work is in museums, has gallery representation, and he has clothes. Work with big brands like Prada and even liquor companies. To me is the best example of how an artist's career should look like. Now that I look at it, the fine art industry wants to put artist in this exclusive box, however James Jean is having his cake and eating it too in a very large way. This is appealing to me. Can we talk about this artist? And why is he so successful?

It is not surprising then that there was little to be seen of their work in years past. Lets hope now that age race and gender are ignored and not exploited in the quest to find the "top 10".

While i’m glad that the art world is course-correcting and becoming inclusive, what it seems to be here is an active avoidance of white male artists, that is reflected in the curation of top-tier galleries. There’s no Asian artists on this top 10 either, which is at odd with how active the asian market currently is. This list might be representative of the ultra contemporary art scene. Or it might just be representative of the programmation and resulting sales of a handful of mega galleries.

When it comes to the active avoidance of white male artists, I think a selection of ten artists is too small a sample to say this is representative of painting today. If I gallery hop in the European art cities, I still see numerous exhibitions by white male artists (simply because that is around 40% of the population here). Concerning the lack of Asian artists, this balance shifts from medium to medium. When it comes to digital art for instance, they are running the show in these top lists by Artfacts, as is the case with Video Art and Installation Art. It's at least very interesting to see how these things differ from discipline to discipline and generation to generation. Thank you for tuning in and for sharing your thoughts!

I love your channel Julien and appreciate all the insider insights. However the data for this video just shows how far the art world is prejudiced by race, to the point of discrimination. The disappointing part is that you are perpetuating this divisive mindset, by presenting the artists as 'need to know'. I would love to see you make a follow up, where you instead share your own personal 10 choices of young artists. Anyway, this one landed wrong for me, but keep up the normally great content.

Hmm I don't do painting (I do sculptures and digital media) but I look at a lot of paintings growing up because my dad/that old man paints oil and stuff. But I think Tala's and Camilla's styles are somewhat similar from what's shown. Tala is a bit heavy. I find it more poignant. I don't know why Camilla ranks higher...guess I'm too intense. I either like it intellectually transcend or emotionally charged. Yeah, make me feel something or make me think.

Whether I agree or disagree with any selections that have been made for this ‘Top 10 List’ is truly, and utterly irrelevant. This video is simply a report on the way things currently sit in the global art market. Nothing more. Market forces have produced these results. These artists come and go out of these lists, just as the Top IMDB actors lists change, just as Spotify’s most popular artists change. It’s like watching the stock market. Devoid and detached from whatever any one persons opinion may be. So consume this content as such. It’s pretty undeniable that colour, race, gender and sexuality help fuel the selection for marketable artists globally. That’s just politics - which too changes with the seasons. As I say, CAI are simply echoing what is at this moment in time. What perhaps is interesting about content like this, is that we, as fellow lovers of making/creating/experiencing art are informed with the knowledge of what the art market forces are up to at the moment. At the moment, it’s hot for ethnically diverse and female artists. Take that information for what it is - information. This information has nothing whatsoever to do with your personal artistic practice, routines and instincts. Carry on on your journey. Let the market do whatever it’s doing. At the end of it all, it truly is irrelevant. Getting frustrated at lists like this is like getting mad at the tide because it went out. Take the information and say ‘yup, the art market is still fuelled by factors separate from the art itself.’ It always has been. It always will be. To the artists pursuing truth through their work - get off your phone (as I’m about to!) pick up your brush - and get to work. You owe it to yourself, especially after consuming all these stat driven results from a market that doesn’t give damn about you, or your work. Make money at your day job. Buy art supplies. Make art. Repeat. That’s all it will ever be about.

Very interesting It shows that finally the art world opens to diversity ww should be thankful for all the pioneers of the 70´and 80´s such as Basquiat and the Black artist movement who open doors when it was by far more difficult for people or color of LGTBQ to do it in the art scene. And I love Rashid Johnson's work.

Sorry to say this- really do not like any of this art shown in this video. I don’t find their art particularly. They might be young and of diverse background but I’m not sure they deserve the hype they get from an artistic perspective. We’re living at a time where the extreme attention to DEI is muddying everything in life in terms of merit; this is especially true in the arts.
