Straddllw I still don't think it will rank at all. He doesn't prefer darker fantasy in general, and Descent is still his 1 vs many go to game of choice.

I like dice masters as well, but really want a decent rule set to be able to play marvel legendary with dice masters.

Kvarnholmen Not really - Agricola is a purist worker placement, no twist on the mechanic, style thing, while Dungeon Lords does the out-guess the opposition thing of having you pick where your workers are going without knowing where your opponents are sending theirs, and in what order. Combined with 3 spaces for workers in each of the 8 slots, and it being predominantly a 4 player game, the fact that the #1 slot is always the worst, and the #2 and #3 slots are usually fairly situational as to which is better (Usually #2 gives a weaker effect to #3, but is also cheaper), gives a less puzzly and more psychological aspect to the game. ...Until you get to the scoring for which Dungeon Lords is just /weird/, where Dungeon Lords goes full on multiplayer solitaire with an almost puzzle thing played out simultaneously and near zero interaction. Two scoring phases a game, as adventurers raid your dungeon, destroying parts of it and possibly getting captured - negative points for the former, positive for the latter, evaluated at the end of the game. Also Agricola works far, far, better with a wider range of player counts (i.e. Dungeon Lords is fiddly as hell with 2, not ideal with 3 but playable, and clearly designed for 4) Nothing I've encountered that quite captures the feel of Dungeon Lords, or that Dungeon Lords really captures the feel of, for better and for worse.

+Derekrledr Before answering to your comment I want to say that I havent played Pandemic legacy nor Risk legacy, so the answer Im going to give you is just based on assumptions I have of those games. My assumption is that risk legacy and pandemic legacy can be played around the same amount of times (I guess?) since pretty much both are about a campaign where your decisions from a round affect one of the next rounds and thats more or less the basic concept of those games. It looks like Tom really loves Pandemic legacy right now, and risk legacy has been in his top 100 last year and also this year, so I wouldnt be surprised if pandemic legacy is in his top 100 next year. +LordOfWinter Stark Indeed. Also, let's remember that the tactical movement really was only six (or was it eight?) squares. Also, it was sometimes pain to get all the stuff fit on the board. I'm still very happy with Magic the Gathering, though. =)

+GrandElemental It's actually 12 zones, lol. It's a 4x3 rectangular Arena. & with the new Battlegrounds expansion, you have a bunch of tiles you can use to make any size/shape board you want. MtG has three things that I disliked about it, 1) Being a CCG, 2) The random card draw, and 3) Getting mana screwed. Not bashing anybody for liking it, it just had those things that I didn't like. MW doesn't have any of those things. It does have it's own problems but they don't bother me as much as the ones I thought MtG had.

***** Yeah, I'm not saying MtG is perfect, but I tolerate its problems much rather than the problems of Mage Wars. Granted, I've only played Mage Wars thrice, all games around 3-4 hours. That is a huge downside for the game for me, it's long and it just felt nothing interesting really happened, there were no critical peak moments which I remember. Most of the time it was just dull. And while MtG certainly has the random draw problem, Mage Wars adds its share of randomness with the dice. When it comes to cards vs. dice, my choice has always been cards. Of course, in the end, it comes down to your personal preference. To me, just the fact that the time (including set-up) difference is huge, I don't really want to play Mage Wars ever again. If I want meatier card game, I much rather play Race for the Galaxy.

That has been the common complaint, the play time. & it was that way for me at first too but as with any game, the time it takes to play reduces over time. My MW games consistently take around 75 minutes now. & while there is randomness with the dice, by their nature, they tend to average out over the course of a game. You'll have both below average rolls and above average ones. Whereas random card draw is completely random. I totally agree though, it depends on personal preferences. The problem is that many people come into Mage Wars expecting it to be this simple 45 minute card game when it is really more akin to a miniatures game in complexity and length.

***** The balancing out with dice is true, but when there are some dice rolls that are vastly more critical than others, the game itself won't balance out. The thing with MtG is that even if you get screwed by cards, it's like 5-10mins and then you get to play again, instantly, as there is really no set-up time at all.

I guess I could narrow this down to being skirmish games with a fantastical element: Duel of Ages, HeroScape, Kemet, Arcadia Quest, Summoner wars, and to a lesser extent Descent. Only Caverna and Cosmic Encounter seem to really break this mold. I realize that these games offer differing play experiences, but it still felt like a lot of the same type of game. which probably makes sense, as we all have leanings in our favorite types of games. I was just hoping for more diversity.

+BigSqueeGG They are quite different. I prefer 2. Most people prefer 2, you'll find the occasional purist that will complain how 2 isn't nearly the game 1 was, but they are few and far between. It is heavily streamlined (which is a good thing) compared to the original. I find it much easier to get to the table now.

+BigSqueeGG there is a conversion kit that has monster cards/character sheets for all 1.0 monsters/heroes. Note: the hero&villain packs have updated sculpts and rules for these, with some better balancing.. that said I play without those packs, and don't have trouble using just the cards from my conversion kit. Some conversion kit heroes are lacklustre but I have over 50, so whatever, right?
