I read 300 pages of Moby Dick this year and it was tough...Steven Erikson is easy compared to Moby Dick.

@@bigork2099 Nathaniel Philbrick’s In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex was the true story of Moby Dick! It was excellent and an easy read. I think they made a movie of this book with one of the Hemsworth brothers.

@@bigork2099 I'd say the Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun books are tough. They are readable in a way but only when I got the companion book by Michael Andre-Driussi it made me realize I hadn't really understood anything.

Great list ! Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these favorites, our taste is very similar but I have only dipped a toe into the waters of my reading journey compared to you. Many added to my Want to Read list! The Book Thief made me cry as well, a rare feat. Loved A Gentleman in Moscow, All the Light, The Road, so many more on here, and am currently reading Lonesome Dove and blown away by McMurtry's epic. Cheers

Thanks! I am excited to try your recommendations. The breadth is somewhat surprising, and you have provided a spark to try more mysteries and westerns - maybe a ww2 historic too. Sword of Shannara was my first book purchase too, and also holds a place in my heart. Pillars of the Earth...wow that was amazing. George R.R. schools Sanderson for me so far.

Great Video Mr. Durfee. I loved it. I have probably read only 30 percent of those books but looking forward to reading some of the ones you have on this list now. I do have a suggestion if you don't mind. For your next top 100 if you could not add any Stephen King Books. NOT because I dislike him. The opposite. My favorite author of all time. I also belive he is yours as I have seen in the past you post all your Stephen King books ranked. I also just watched your top 100 sci-fi which I also loved. Keep up the great work. I just ordered your trilogy will hopefully read it before this summer comes.

What a great list of pop fiction-- informative and I found myself nodding in agreement on so many titles. Especially I'm a huge fan of McMurtry, James Michner, Frank Herbert, Ken Follet, Tolkien, Stephen King, Asimov and so many of your choices. If I were to make a list, I'd put them in alphabetical order by genre. It's too difficult to choose the best except Dune is my personal favorite of all time. Found at least 20 authors of interest from your list. Your rapid fire, to the point descriptions are truly appreciated.!

I loved your choice of books and authors, namely, Moby Dick, Rendezvous with Rama, Foundation, Anna Karenina, The Name of the Rose, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, Stephen King's novels...The writers you mentioned that I have not read yet I added to my '"To read next" list. The only great, if not the greatest writer of all time missing here is Feodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky!

I really like you sir. I'm trying to start reading as an adult more regularly. Particularly books I should've read earlier lol. I love your enthusiasm and humour. It's inspiring and relaxes me when I'm stressed. I have a few of the books you mentioned on my list such as Moby Dick, Lord of the Flies, The Dark Tower, The Martian, Dune, The Da Vinci Code, A Game of Thrones, War and Peace, To Kill a Mockingbird, Pillars of the Earth and Lonesome Dove. I can't wait to read them all! I've also read a couple of the books you mentioned in Gone Girl and Lord of the Rings. It was a while ago but I remember being really engaged. Also loved The Hobbit :) I'm currently reading The New Kingdom by Wilbur Smith as I'm studying Ancient Egypt. So thought I'd read a novel set in this period :)
