12 TIPS FOR OPEN SPACES: 1. Determine how you will use the space 2. Be consistent with design style 3. Use a consistent color palette 4. Use common threads (Similar texture, color, pattern) b. Use rhythm to unify the spaces 5. Be consistent with the flooring 6. Define the areas a. Use rugs with similarities and contrast b. Use furniture c. Use architectural features 7. Use different lighting sources with 8. Consider flow and traffic (Define the zones, measure the space) 9. Be consistent with the windows treatment (e.g. Mount the curtain rods the same height) 10. Avoid matchy furniture 11. Create a focal point 12. Paint all the trim the same color

One suggestion for your next videos. You already have a series of videos where you explain design styles. It could be nice to see a video series where you show how to mix 2 or 3 styles. The most random and hard for the non designer, the better ! Like industrial mixed with wabi sabi and afrocentric or boho mixed with art deco or farm house mixed with art nouveau. It could be like a design dice, one or two random design styles + one or multiples rooms. I don't think I have yet seen that type of videos but I'm sure I have seen people asking how to mix styles.

We are building an open concept house so this information is very helpful - thank you Zahira. Please let me know the background wall color in this video. We are considering a greige color for walls and a tall fireplace with beige tile but after this info I'm going to rethink because I don't think it's a strong enough focal point. Really learn from your videos!

I love your videos . They are so good . I have the weirdest layout . I don’t know what the best furniture layout I can do . I have a living room and dining room combo . But it’s small and all the walls are different sizes so having furniture that is not against the wall it’s so hard ! Ayúdame ! lol 😂

Hi Zahira, you are amazing and I enjoy watching your videos. I have an open space with a long wall. In the center, there is a kitchen. In the dining room, I would like to put cabinets with a wine cooler and glass doors for wine glasses, etc like a bar. Hello Zahira, I have been a subscriber of your channel for some time. Been watching and your Ideas have always been awesome and have helped a lot. Specially the video about common mistakes and how to resolve them. I am actually here to share a serious problem with my place. I have a very well thought out house on 400 sq.yrds with tonnes of opportunities to decorate it, This place is practically in a desert. No matter how much I care for it, the interior of the house gets too dusty within hours of cleaning. And I love the desert dust (its not like regular dust with dirt in it, its really fine sand gives a sense of calm and eternal-time. I am a minimalist by nature. Can you please give me some pointers as to how can I decorate the place?

If you have a small space, it will be better to have a light color for the trim; on the other hand, you can use darker tones if the area is ample. :)

I would sell the 2 brown chairs and replace them with lighter colours as it is already too dark. Or I would replace the sofa with a lighter colour and keep the 2 brown chairs as a focal point of colour.

Whoever came up with open concept must have fallen and hit their head. You could not even give me a house that is open concept. Who wants a Kitchen in there Livingroom, give me a wall and separate all the spaces. I do not want to be relaxing in the Livingroom watching TV and hear people in the Kitchen rattling dishes, pots and pans and talking, or a dining room in your Livingroom and all you hear is people sitting around the table talking. What a stupid design, each room needs its own space with walls and entry ways, maybe with doors, you can decorate each space with the theme of that space. I do not like sitting in the Livingroom, look to my left or right and see my Fridge and a Kitchen counter, how stupid is that.
