I have the Micro Terror. Since I'm a bassist, this little (and LOUD) amp is great when I pick up a six string. I get awesome doom tones, but also really juicy blues too. Really forces you to work the vol and tone knobs. Love it.

I have a H&K Grandmeister 36, a fantastic sounding amp and makes a great source of heat if you have a cold room they run very hot! You can use them in low power mode for home use, and still sound good at bedroom levels. As i come from the UK, i still like the Marshall amps, and older Vox tube amps. Plenty to choose from, excellent video for models that are less well known.

The MT15 is incredible. It’s similar to the EVH lunchbox, but with an added clean channel, and a dedicated EQ for each channel. And the Lead channel might be the best gain tones I’ve ever heard in a small valve amp head. Best value out there.

Being a stay-at-home guitar dad now, low wattage is the way to go for me. I love the 20/10 watt DSL20, and have a 20w Orange combo (along with the rest of my wall of tiny doom). I’d frankly love to see Marshall give the JCM900s some of the Studio series love, with the same ideology put into that 5881 power section. I even emailed Marshall about it, and they said they’d pass it on to R&D. I have no illusions that they’ll actually act on it, but it’s nice to dream. That 900 behind you brings a tear to my eye, ever since mine had to sell to pay my kids’ tuition. Side note: a friend of mine lives in England, and his whole family is there, but years ago I met his late grandfather, and I was told stories of my friend using perfectly round 12”cutting boards in the kitchen as a child, and never knew where they came from. Turns out his grandfather worked with Peavey and Harman along with others as an industrial engineer, and helped JIM MARSHALL set up his factory to produce the first mass produced 412 cabs. I was shocked to realize that I was then a handshake away from the man himself. I talked to this man for hours about his work in the industry - it was truly fascinating. And I don’t think I’ve heard a funnier phrase than “low-wattage package.” Great vid, great channel!

While I never had the 20 watt Marshall DSL, I had the DSL 40cr with the 1x12 combo. Man I loved that amp. For cheap, under $500 used this thing has it all. The ultra clean was so clean I played acoustic through it. The Gain was well Marshall. It had the definitive Marshall sound. Has and excellent FX loop circuit and then can go direct to front of house with an emulated speaker out. I used one of these for playing live for a long time until I went with a Kemper. Kemper wins hands down for playing live but simplicity and price Marshall DSLs are awesome.

Often forgotten are the fanstastic Gallien Krueger ML amps, as far as i know the first micro amps for guitarists, ultra effective eq section ... then there is the zt lunchbox amp, it is super loud and a nice pedal platform especially for fuzz and rock tones but the sound when connected to a 4x12 is shockingly fat ... it is amazing ... then the AMT stonehead it is an amazing amp for metal i love it ... Then Kong tube five, 5 watts 200 bucks new ... it hast sooo much attack it is not an amp for everybody but a great tool to have it is like a tiny jcm 800 with the fastest attack ever . Victory Kraken and that little red one i for the name of are also amaaaaazing

I do not wonder this. The depth of the ocean would be the same. Thank you for knowing & using correct grammar. So which head is best? I hate solid state & don't use pedals. I don't like the Orange sound. If you could pick just one, & they all cost the same, which you choose the Marshall DSL 20, the Mesa Boobie Mini Rectifier, the PRS, the EVH, or the Randall? I mostly play high gain stuff, but I do like a decent clean channel. I have a Peavey now & the clean just isn't all that and the high-gain sound, while decent, doesn't have much flexibility IMO.
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 3 жыл бұрын
If your clean tone is important to you, then get the Mini Recto or the Randall Diavlo or the Marshall DSL. The rest of the ones you mentioned are not know for their clean tones.
@TheBsavage
@TheBsavage 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertWJackson THAT'S good advice. Thank you VERY MUCH for taking the time to respond!!! I think I'll avoid the Randall. I found out it's made in China, and for $1000 I'd expect a bit more. (Labor in China is super cheap. A family of 4 can eat a good dinner out for about $1.60) That leaves the DSL & the Recto. Marshalls are, of course, THE amp, & I've been pricing them this morning. It's kind of hard to pass up on the value of the DSL100HR, but "lunchbox" it ain't. I like the Rectos because they're made here in the USA (I believe in that whole buy American-employ your neighbor paradigm). The DSL is made in Vietnam (I don't know what the politics there look like these days, but it ain't China.). The ones that keep vying for my next amp-dollar are DSL Marshalls, EVH, H&K Grandmeister (although made in China too), and all the Mesa Boogies. With this lockdown, & GC's slow-motion bankruptcy, it's hard to go and check these amps out (GC doesn't carry Mesa, but Mesa has a store in Hollywood I believe I could haunt.) I am strongly considering just buying all the amps on my list and then returning the one's that don't make the cut. Shipping, like to send one back to Musician's Friend, is BRUTAL, but it's cheaper than having a $1000 foot-stool, and it's hard to get a real feel for an amp from an Internet video rather than hooked up to my cabinet in my music room. Damn all that computerized electronic music. If it wasn't for that processed auto-tuned crap there'd be guitar stores EVERYWHERE, like back in the good old days. Your comments on the PRS were intriguing, but I have an illogical visceral bias against anything with an artists signature on it, no matter who they are or how good. It just feels too much like getting a Scooby-Doo lunchbox (look at me mom, I'm !). I'll probably end up a Marshall or a Mesa (they got too many amps, which they describe very poorly, to the point it feels like a cult). I'm not averse to the EVH, I don't mind employing some of our neighbors to the South, but I'd still prefer USA stuff. Too bad Soldanos cost like $3K+. I hate this. Every minute shopping is not a minute rocking. Thanks again and KEEP ON ROCKING!!!

It's good to know the original Marshall DSL was made here. I quite like them and as a Marshall owner myself & a proud Englishman, it would stick in my throat to buy a Marshall that's made in China. Just as bad , probably common knowledge , but I only found out in recent years that a great deal of Celestion speakers aren't made in Ipswich anymore either. The fact that their gear is touted as the "British Sound" and they often show the Union flag in their advertising ,I think they're taking the piss getting stuff knocked out on the cheap in China. It's simply not Cricket old bean ! 😉
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 3 жыл бұрын
The ORIGINAL DSL’s - the JCM 2000’s - didn’t have anything smaller than a 50-watt head. The one that I’m referring to in this video is the current DSL20HR that is currently made in Asia. But I agree that it’s a shame that some Celestion speakers are still made in the U.K. and others are made in China, and its NOT easy to tell the difference without opening up the back of an amp.

@RobertWJackson 3 жыл бұрын
It sounded okay to me, just not great. Very dark sounding and just “meh”. The 30-watt version sounded a little better, but still not good enough to make me fall in love with it. And overdrive pedal may have helped it, but using pedals to make an amp I don’t like sound passable seems a little redundant to me. I’d rather use overdrive pedals to enhance the sound of an amp I already like.

Honestly, if I were going to buy one tomorrow it would probably be the PRS MT15 because I’ve wanted one since they came out. Of the ones that I own, I use the Randall RD20 the most, but I also really like one called the Panama FiveWatt. I didn’t mention that one in the video because Panama are now out of business, I believe, and they didn’t disclose a few things to me about some of their amps that I think they should have when I was doing demos for them.

The low wattage heads are pretty much only good for studio use. Too loud for home practice, too quiet for jamming with a drummer.

@@RobertWJackson its not tho. I've experimented with them. Low wattage amps do not produce the same amount of volume as a 100watt amp. They get loud yes, but not as loud as their bigger brothers.
@RobertWJackson
@RobertWJackson 2 ай бұрын
Yes, but the notion that they’re too quiet to jam with a drummer is ludicrous. I’ve gigged with my 20-watt Randall MANY times. How many gigs have you played or been in attendance of when the guitar player was using a Fender Deluxe Reverb, which is a 22-watt combo amp? The PRS MT15 is gaining more and more popularity all the time because now people are discovering that they can gig with that amp, and it’s only 15-watts. In the other end of the spectrum, a cranked up Vox AC-30 is louder than a cranked up JCM 800, and a cranked up 85-watt Fender Twin Reverb combo will EAT that same JCM 800 for lunch. Wattage does NOT mean what mean what people think it means.

Dude, that amp had only been out for about a year when this video was posted. LOL Not a bad amp, but one of the greatest ever? The jury is still out on that. I actually played through one for the first time at a shop a few weeks ago and honestly I was rather disappointed it. It didn’t sound bad at all, but it was a long way away from the most mind-blowing tone I’d ever heard.
@mountainpeakcloud8442
@mountainpeakcloud8442 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertWJackson Well I guess that's the thing about these kind of "greatest" lists, it's all pretty subjective. Having played the JJ Jr. plenty, and the amps on your list, I prefer it to many on your list. A year is plenty of time to judge an amps tone... it's one thing to say that you personally haven't experienced it enough to to say the jury is out, but many have plenty of experience with it. Personally I don't believe in categories like the "greatest ever", because there's a lot of subjectivity involved, but considering some of the amps you've chosen, the Friedmans can certainly more than hang IMO.
