Thank you for consistently putting out interesting and useful ham radio content! Much appreciated! I'd like to offer a suggestion if you don't mind. Something I noticed on the older videos that still happens. Your audio quality is great and punchy but you need a pop filter and not just a windscreen on the mic. Try one of the flat screen types that goes in front of the mic. The sponge layered ones are supposed to be fairly transparent to the sound. Thanks for a great channel!

I have a President Lincoln II + and it is actually a very good radio. I do have mine expanded but you get to change modes so it can still be HAM bands only when you want it that way. I've made several contacts with this radio and always got great audio reports. It is in fact FCC certified however once you open it up that changes things obviously . I got mine when they were 249$ but they have since become more popular and went up in price. I highly recommend it. Lots of great features and a solid radio from President. 73.

in order to use it on 11 meter it has to be Part 95 Subpart D certification. of course most people do not go by that as they use illegal amplifiers to boost power

Hello, I have the Anytone AT-5555 and the AT-5555n which I purchased from the UK. Yes, they're both moded for frequency and not much else by a licensed Ham. Other than that they're both OEM. I remain comfortable in the 11meter band. (26.8250 - 27.6550) My radios are factory other than the bands. Amateur radios are simply better built, like Rx and Tx filtering for quieter QSO's. Paired with good coax and antenna the Anytone quality of electronics is really hard to surpass. Ive been into 11meters since age eleven in the BSA and got my Merit Badge for Radiotelephone. KZS-0130 Hey, now that I'm old, I've gave consideration to getting my Tkt. Your videos are very persuasive. Especially with no code to learn. Anyway, YES Anytone has good quality gear. Thanks for the vids and knowledge.

I have 2 Baofengs, 1 Yaesu FT10, Anytone 778UV, IC 718, and a Radio Shack Dual Band Mobile (1996). The HT's are great for sitting in the garage and hit a repeater about 15 mile away and talk all over the county. The AnyTone will be installed in the car, the rest are in my room. I have had real good luck talking on the AnyTone. I probably have too many, radios but how many should one have?

Another good radio Jason is the ANYSECU WEP9900 with all the controls on the microphone in color. at transmits up to 25 watts on VHF. R/L has it for 124.95 but I got mine on Amazon for about the same price back in Sept and now its 115. Great little mobile dual band with a Moonraker mag mount antenna.

The baofeng dm-1701 is a good one. I would reccomend doing the open gd77 mod on it right away though. It gets you into dmr in the under $100 price range, and with the open gd77 mod it's fairly easy to program with lots of contacts and channels. You probably won't find a cheaper handheld that can do digital mode and analog on both 2m and 440.

One of the cool features of the GS-5B is it can scan local radio activity and identify the frequency. Pretty cool if someone is using one of those Rugged channels and you don't have it programmed. Lots of police and emergency services have switched to encrypted or trunked radio systems, which are really designed not to be monitored. Some still have ham bands. This depends on your local area. You can likely find this information online if it is compatible with ham bands. That radio looks pretty great. Might be difficult to get started with something other than the normal radio people buy.. But it's probably not that different. Features are great. Bluetooth programming built in, extra channels, more features, 8 or 10 watts? Good bet.

Pretty sure that anytone 10m radio that you're talking about is just a striker in different clothing. I have seen the lids off of both of them and they look identical. Would really be cool if you (or another popular youtuber) would really dig into these radios and provide an overview of who really makes them. For example, you featured today the Radioddity GA-510 ... I have one. But I also have a Baofeng BF-H6 which is the same radio and if you look at the Tidradio TD-H6 it is also the same radio. So .. who really makes them? Radioddity? Baofeng? Tidradio? or? The same can be said for many other radios. The packaging (e.g. style, color, etc.) or vendor might change, but what is under the covers is really the same making the marketplace confusing. My guess is that Baofeng is the primary manufacturer and all these other radios (Tidradio, Radioddity, Retevis, etc.) are just white label options from Baofeng. Yes, they are different companies, but Baofeng (or?) is their manufacturer. But that's just a guess. I've poked around the interweb a few times to see if I could find a family tree of manufacturers (especially of the Chinese radios) but haven't been able to find anything. Would love to know because there are just too many videos (not you) about "new" radios that are really just re-packaged (new styling, etc,) versions of something that's already out there. Been burned a few times buying something that I thought was new and novel only to find out its really not different ...

@@markr.1984I own plenty of "serious" radios, the Japanese radio companies are 20 years behind with their features. Chinese radios come with: extra antennas, desktop charger, programming cable, wall wart all in the box. The USB has the ability to make programming cables and chargers obsolete. Not one Japanese radio has that.
@jonathonschram3429
@jonathonschram3429 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the Japanese companies are slow to catch up with some of the features we like (usb c charging, programming, etc)...but they still make vastly superior radios. I have a handful of 'high end' Chinese hts and mobiles...and none of them are on par (rx/tx) with many 25 year old yaesu's, icoms, or kenwoods. Maybe I'm still living in the dark ages (I do still have a vx-7r in my plate carrier afterall)...but my ft3dr, ftm500r, and 991a do EVERYTHING I need to do EXCEPT dmr...which my btech handles just fine. And, I'm pretty sure they will all be functioning AND supported 20 years from now. I'm not knocking the Chinese stuff, I use and enjoy them. But let's be honest here, they aren't built as well, don't sound as good, and are generally a tier below their (admittingly more expensive) Japanese competition.

@@jonathonschram3429 The Japanese radios are cleaner and sometimes work better for certain use cases. I would not say they are necessarily built better. I have been burned by them ending support for radios. Icom and Yaesu have done this to me. The Baofengs are junky feeling radios, but most of them except some early and counterfeit ones are clean. This silly little radio is responsible for a lot of new hams. They sold a lot of them. I can honestly say no ham radio that I own can outperform my Anytone 878. It’s the one Chinese radio that is built very well. I really wanted to hate it after I bought it but it’s now my go to radio. It lacks usb c programming but usb c batteries are now available for it. The Chinese stuff may not work as well, which is subjective but they certainly work good enough. 73

I love the fact that you do nice neutral reviews with no hatred of CCR's like all the sad hams and radio Karens out there. Here's my take: Anytone/Tech 878 and clones: Had 3, all returned because of abysmally poor squelch sensitivity, 'Feng blows it away. UV21R: Nice radio but why, oh why didn't they make the side buttons programmable!? Would've been perfect. GS5R: I don't use mine because of the horrible long squelch tail. Makes listening a chore, shame 'cause I like it otherwise. UV5R: not fond of looks but they "just work!" In my rural area they work fine. Quansheng: #1 winner, looks great, great receive audio, most importantly-honors reverse burst on PL so there's no squelch tail at all. I have 3 and they're great.

So, should look at just get a dual band for my 2nd unit or does the limited access on the FM only 6&10 have any traffic? Obviously I am a new ham….I am going for my general next month. I have the Xeigu G90. I am very happy with it, BUT... 20 WATTS IS NOT QRP! QRP is 5 watts and under. With a decent antenna, the 20 watts is all the power for whatever you need to work on HF. I have DXCC Mixed and Digital with the G90 and need to find 2 states on 80 meters for 5 Band WAS. No beams, just verticals and wire antennas on a city lot. I have run QRP since 1972. In 1966 I started out with all tube gear, and back then 100 watts or less was considered QRP. I When I had the space and the beams, I worked all states on QRP. IMHO, the G90 is the perfect first radio for a new HF operator, and you can turn the power back and run QRP if you want.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 3 ай бұрын
Anything under 100w is QRP. The 5w rule only applies to contests. QRP is literally defined as "low power" or "decrease power". There's actually not a number associated with it. But since most rigs are 100w, QRP can be anything that's less
