Hell yea FFXII is number 1! A lot of people hated this game and I have no idea why.

Thanks. I mainly put FF12 up on the top spot because of it's battle system. I didn't like micro managing or babysitting team mates during battles, and FF12's battle system gets to a point where I didn't have to do this and my team mates took care of themselves during battles. It's awesome to see them do this.

To me, all the RPGs on PS2 are amazing.

XII was really much better than X. But you missed Valkyrie Profile 2.

In my opinion.. There is 3 top aspect that rpg should have.. 1. Good music 2. Good story and deep hero's character 3. Good gameplay And in my opinion ffx is better than ffxiii

Yess finally my favourite game is number one. I spent over 177 hours to beat the game including: complete all side quest, getting max level to all members, collect all the espers, getting the Zodiac's Spear, obtain all rewards, beating the super boss Yiazmat & Omega MK XII that giving me pain in the ASS!! Love the battle mechanics & best graphics on ps2 too. Hoping they were to make a remaster... :)

Shadow Hearts: Covenant and Xenosaga: Episode III are very notable and very missing :)

Shadowhearts Covenant was another great RPG. Worth trying out if you've not played previously.

I judge based upon the amount of times I've replayed the game and kept interested. This list comes very close to my own: #1 Final Fantasy XII (honorable to X) [excited about FF7 and FFtactics on my iPad] #2 Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time (fan since the ps1 version) #3 Kingdom Hearts (honorable to 2) [girlfriend friendly game] #4 Rogue Galaxy (just to hear Jaster say, "I'm not fighting that thing all by myself!!") #5 Dragon Quest VIII [character development is fun] #6 Shining Force Neo (been a fan since Shining In The Darkness, so biased) [love slashing mobs] #7 Okami [girlfriend friendly game; very pretty game] #8 Drakenguard (honorable to 2) [replay battles just to use the weapon effects] #9 Bard's Tale [hilarious game that makes fun of itself thereby a satire of RPG's] #10 Radiata Stories [recruiting is very fun actually, especially after a few years when you've forgotten the clues] #11 Grandia #12 Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 (honorable to 2) #13 Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter [only down here cause the underground part is a bit depressing] #14 Disgaea [mentioned last b/c i really put this game in what I consider Goth/Horror RPG, which isn't the fantasy world of other RPG's. It's like comparing Blake and Poe.] Had to rank, but some of these are really tied with each other.

Good list, but you come on man, Skies of Arcadia that game is an absolute gem.

Best RPG's of PS2 for me are Champions Of Norrath and Champions Return To Arms, amazing and underrated games.

I am just glad Radiata Stories. Rogue Galaxy, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter got some recognition. They are my favorites of the PS2 generation, despite having played(and enjoyed) Final Fantasy 12, SMT: Noctune, Persona 3 & 4(have yet to beat any of the MegaTen games as I always get stuck at some point.)

the fact that you left out shine megami tensei series already tells me that you have not tried all the rpg it has to offer, of course personal opinions matters but majority will agree the fact that megami tensei series did not even appear in the list is totally mind boggling.

I can't believe Legaia 2: dual saga didn't even make the list. It makes the top 5 without any argument at all. It would even be in the running for top 3. It had battle system, soundtrack, story, decent character development, mini games, lots of side quests, excellent art style. Yeah, the first one was a bit better, but the first one also beats virtually every ps2 rpg as well.

I think u are over attracted by Square enix and FF series. Not bad , but not the best neither. You should try some Atlus game like Dgital Devil saga, or Nocturne, Personal 3, 4, Devil summoner... And how about Valkyrie profile? :)) To tell the truth, the FF XII has a good start up, but then , it become really tiring and annoying like a MORPG. Flashy graphic does not mean high class. If sticking to the FF, I like the X over it.

i love the logic on the comments here. we dont like certain games because they are mainstream well ive got news for you anything that is popular is mainstream and any game you can possibly name for the ps2 was mainstream 1. all atlus games 2. all nis games 3. all capcom 4 all square enix, enix, soft , square, circle, oval whatever seriously kingdom hearts, final fantasy, tales, persona, dragon quest, suikoden, breath of fire they are all mainstream and you people who bought them and loved them made them that way. the only game ive seen on any of these comments that probably isnt is shadow hearts. if you want a good game by valkyrie profile silmeria that game isnt mainstream i dont even think they advertised it. yes advertising a game makes it mainstream instantly or if you show it at a convention because tv conventions magaines even putting games on youtube those are all mainstream media outlets hint the word mainstream sorry to burst your collective bubble

I played Shadow of the Colossus and still have that game. It was a lot of fun. Didn't care for riding the horse though, but the boss fights were fun. =)

I love that I have most of those games, X-2, Dark Cloud, and Dark Cloud 2 being my favorites. I'm really axious for kh3 and ff15 to come out.

I'm not surprised that it didn't make the list, since it kinda got forgotten about in the shuffle of time. But I would have put the original dot hack series some place on this if I was doing this. It's one of the most engaging jrpgs I have ever played.

I would change the order, but the rpgs included are all pretty good. I was happy to see Rogue Galaxy on 3rd! Other Good rpgs are: Valkyrie profile: Silmeria Odin Sphere

FF12 is in the top spot because during the game I reached a point where I didn't have to micro-manage or baby sit the other characters fighting with me, especially when it came to healing each other. I don't like digging around in a over complicated menue and battle system in order to do stuff, as most jrpg's are of this nature. Games like the Tales series have a battle system similar to FF12's, but FF12 really nailed it, and that's one of the reason why I gave FF12 the top spot

It's a decent list, I personally would leave out Star Ocean, Breath of Fire & Grandia ...I found those games to be lackluster. I'm assuming you don't consider Tactical RPG's as true RPG's? Otherwise you'd be missing Eternal Poison, Soul Nomad, Disgaea etc. (which is fine I guess). I would have included Shadow Hearts, Ar Tonelico, Romancing Saga, and Valkyrie Profile 2...Also there's Baldur's Gate 2 or Champions of Norrath unless its strictly JRPG.

the music in dq8 is phenomenal.. rogue galaxy still has some nice pieces but deciding which world i like better is hard. im on a second play through of rogue galaxy at the moment i clocked in at 160 hours and as for DQ8 I've completed that at least 20 times there both so wonderful :)

I am replaying FFXII right now since I got my hands on an international copy. The original game didn't really hook me. I probably got 95% done with the story and gave up because of boredom. I really enjoyed FFX and it's one of my favorite FF games. 9 and 5 are also on the top for me.

Extremely different from my list, (Final Fantasy XII and Rogue Galaxy are about all we have in common here) but that just proves how much rpg goodness was available on the PS2. Romancing SaGa is my literal favorite JRPG of all time. It's pretty different from a lot of JRPGs due to the nonlinearity, but it's excellent if you can get on its wavelength.

Love the FFX background music with this, my absolute favorite rpg of all time!

Same here, totally agree with you. I also felt that FFX-2 was worth playing.... that's why I still have this game. I also liked the music in the game too.

On PS2 nothing beats Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant IMO, graphically it looks a lot like FFX but with a very much more mature theme, the combat system and the way to learn abilities is unparalleled, the bestiary is huge, lot of sidequests, great maps and soundtrack. If you never tried it then don't lose any more time, Shadow Hearts 1 and 3 are pretty good too, but the 2nd one is on another level

Hi man. You have a great list there. I have even seen some amazing games. Still... there are many great games they should be there. And as much fan I am of Squaresoft, X-2 and XII I do not feel they belong in this list and I find it bad, you have the X behind XII, it is hierosilym for me. But still, nice list!

Follow up: Have you tried the Wild Arms series? #5 is good, 4 just had a bloody hard gameplay which they improved in 5. But anyway good job on making the list. I see that you really love RPGs and from a variety of types too.=)

the characters and environment style of this game reminds me a lot of ff9, it's probably inspired by it.. i'm gonna give this a try, it seems beautiful!

FFXII was amazing. I constantly fiound myself returning to the game even though I didn't like most final fantasy games. It has one of the best battle systems in an RPG.

I've never played the games you mentioned, but i'll try them. Especially Persona 4, because it seems to be a fan favorite that I missed. Final Fantasy X2 was fun to play and it has great music.
