In Australia, we have naturally growing caltrops, commonly known as three-cornered jacks or Bindis.

Throwing stars as a climbing aide, I don't think so. Imagine grabbing hold of a sharp edge and then put all of your body weight on it, didn't need your fingers after all did you.
