I should also have one of the last brushes that Rob made under TDR this week as well. And I'm also expecting the PAA Peregrino any day now.

The first piece of wet shaving I got back in the day (decades ago) was the soap and brush kit. The first thing I got coming into this hobbies (I was using Mach 3s back in the day) was a brush. Brushes are the items I love eye over the most and Wish I could buy them all. It was the last purchase I just made. The handles have the most art and are the most one-of-a-kind of any part.

I recently got started with wet shaving in December 2023. I started with a $30.00 Razor Emporium Best Badger Amber Acrylic and Black 26"mm. I found the brush to eat the soap. I also find the handle a little on the small side. I added a $10.00 Stirling Soap Co. 24mm Boar Brush which I found great as an exfoliator... but not my favorite. However, the Stirling handle on this brush fits great in my hand. I then decided to add another Stirling Soap Co. brush... a $15.00 Synthetic w/Pro Handle 26mm. I love this synthetic brush and it has become my daily driver. I shave about every other day. I really enjoy the feel and performance of this brush. It is very soft with a hefty weight. It whips up a wonderful lather. Today was the first time I face lathered instead of bowl lathered... oh my that was AWESOME. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your top 15. It gives me ideas for adding another 1 or 2 brushes.

Hey Brian! Sorry for the late reply. Be sure to hydrate the badger brushes a little more than usual. They will eat more soap, especially when the knot is larger. I love the RE badger. I do also love Stirling's brushes, but I love brushes in general 😁🤫😊 Have a great weekend!

So many brushes but most of us can do just fine with,... fewer. I have three shaving-lathering brushes: One which I do not like and two which I do like. The feeling about buying through Amazon is understandable. I look for shaving supplies through online retailers who specialize in wet-shave supplies. Other than shaving related purchases, I use Amazon when I can't find what I want through ordinary retailers in physical buildings. The reason I bought my second brush was because the cheap first brush I bought (through Amazon) broke so I found a very good brush from Target store. The reason I bought my third brush was because I wanted to both try a synthetic bristle brush and also have one extra good brush.

agreed, I have 9 brushes and that’s likely 6 too many. fortunately I stopped buying brushes 4years ago,, very happy and content with what I have. If you look long enough you will subconsciously motivate why you “need” it. regards dapper shaves

Great collection of synthetic brushes 👍 one of my favourites is the yaqi cola brush I do prefer the smaller knots I like some of the Paa Sythentic brushes but the knots are quite large once splayed

Hey Stuart, I feel ya. 24 is about as big as I want to go with most brushes. I think the "big" knot fad is slowly coming to its end. So it should make it easier for us to have a greater selection of knots in the future. Have a good one!

Nice video this will help me as my brush collection grows I have my 5th PAA brush in the mail if I dont include my 24 mm PAA knot I put in a custom The Ca Yuen workshop handle. I really get a new brush to often. Soap and splash set if the main thing growing in my den. Has for when you get to make your top badger brushs I hope to learn more which brush artisans have amazing knots. I have a 2 Grizzly Bay brush with fanchurian V15 knot which is at the moment my favorite badger knot.

P.S. good point on budget. I would have more brush and razor if I did use most of my budget on soap and splash sets. 😅 but I still need the reset of PAA's brushs

Grizzly makes some beautiful handles. They get their knots from Rob Moffett and Rob does em right. I have a v11 and v13. The v16 is out now

Why don't brush manufacturers grade the quality of synthetic bristles? We don't know the grades like BASF 3,4 or 5. Feeling bristles is impossible when buying online and so much emphasis is describing measurements, shapes and appearance of handles which doesn't help gauge the feel which I believe is more important than turning and embedded coins etc. I'd like to know which companies are providing bristles and the objective improvements from one generation to another? Would you please share insights that producers might only share with public promoters? Thanks.

I wish there was a grade like you mentioned with BASF. I think that would be awesome. Buying online is tricky for sure, I usually rely on guys that I know for their opinion. If you ever have any questions about a particular knot I'd be happy to help the best I can. Have a great week Finn!

I got a Chubby platinum bristles but it was worse than their Trafalgar t3 it was very scritchy for facelathering which i prefer to do. apparently according to someone that owns multiple they changed the bristles because according to him older models were nice and soft.

awesome brushes my man! is it weird that i prefer boar? i love a stiff brush, feel like i can easily work the lather into my beard and exfoliate my skin. idk it just feels better on my face. synthetics are too soft, and its hard to lather on my face or in the shave soap container bc the bristles are so soft they hardly take any soap off a harder soap. does any of that make any sense? lol. i know people are crazy about synthetics, but i've just never understood why. help me understand it haha

Lol hey Dave. I prefer badger over synthetic and I totally understand. I really enjoy a couple of my Boars. Then there's my love for black/pure badger, the ones with a little scritch. I've noticed not a lot of people appreciate those either. So, yeah what you're saying totally makes sense to me 👍👍🙌

shave with any bar soap? cut the bar soap up put in a mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, microwave for a minute or so? if it Foam up stop. let cool you just went it to congeal' place in the sun, until soap hardens Larry

Hilarious.. the EXACT same as you.. Astraeus is my primary (75% of the time) and my Simpson’s T3 the other 25%… but that’s the only 2 synthetics that I have🤣. It’s exactly why I asked the question.. was curious on the Astraeus😊. Great brush imo. I have a H.L. Thater synthetic coming. Just to make sure I get one before they are gone for good. It will be my first Thater and my first Beehive handle. chose the Tortoise shell as it may go well with my Captains choice Copper bowl🤷🏼♂️. I can only hope that Thater’s are good.. any thoughts on their synthetic brushes?

The Astraeus fibers are IMPRESSIVE!. Im hoping PAA makes some more brushes with them. I've heard good things about the Thater . I've wanted one ever since they released that new/current fiber. If you think of it, let me know your thoughts about them.

I bowl lather then work it on my face. Is the Peregrino good for bowl lathering? I use softer soaps, not triple-milled.

Oh yeah! It's perfect for bowl lathering. The fibers that are in the Peregrino are fantastic! Have you watched the video I did about Phoenix shaving brushes? I'll put a link in the next comment. All of Phoenix's brushes are perfect for bowl lathering. Have a good one Robert!

Tobin, I'm looking for something with a strong backbone. So far my only experience is with a $7 amazon brush that was plenty soft but had no backbone, and then a Turn N Shave Boss knot. I love the Boss knot and it's definitely a step up in backbone but I'm still looking for more. I tend to puck load and feel I might benefit from slightly more rigidity when loading. Don't really want to try any critter knots. Could you help me, sir?

@VinylObscura give one of the cheaper ones a go first. Maybe try the T2 or something from PAA. That way if you don't like it you're not out much. Im a badger guy first, but I really enjoy many of the synthetics on the market today. And when it comes to my outdoor shave videos I really like them because they dry so quickly. If you do buy one and if you remember let me know how it goes 👍👍

I’m glad I watched this video because I want to get the black one but didn’t know where to find it, there is also a sapphire one but it was sold out and I believe the emerald one is sold out now to hopefully they get more. But I got mine from pastors pharmacy. I also want to try more paa brushes I have the blue areolite brush and I like it but the knot seems to big for me. I’m also the same guy that commented about not being able to get into contact with rich man shaves. Were you ever able to reach him?

Which synthetic brushes do you think compare to the semogue 1305. I love the softness of the 1305 and that is easy to splay but still has good backbone. Is there synthetic brushes like that?

@josebarrios2464 yeah, similar. I'd say the Trafalgar has a little more scritch like a boar, but the G5 has more backbone like a boar. The Wet Shaving Store has both. You can get the G5 for less than $20

The Atomic Rocket is huge and just under $20. If you contact Bobby at Sawdust Creation Studios he can custom-make one to your specifications. Also from Phoenix, they have the Star Wisp and Phantom Aerolite, they are both on the larger size and less than $20

I wish brush manufacturers would come up with a scale for brushes. Knot lift and diameter are in the description, but an evaluation “Scale” measuring: • Softness • Backbone • Splay 1-10 as example (10 as highest) Build a standard for the industry to be measured by. If it exists, I’m unaware. I feel like it would benefit the hobby. A rush might be a 4-7-5 brush or an 8-5-7 brush (as example). By the time my grandkids are shaving, it could be an evolution in the hobby. See a brush and immediately know the scale of evaluation to make the purchase for what you’re looking for in a shave. Seems simple enough🤷🏼♂️ You have plenty of brushes, go ahead and start the process of assessment and come up with this system🤷🏼♂️💪🏼🙏🏼

I've thought about this many times as well. 100% agree! Something like this would be beneficial not just for new guys to the hobby, but I believe it would help old timers too.

@@Tobins_throwbacks I sent this to PAA as a suggestion asking him to get Matt, Mantic and others involved. You need a groundswell from influencers that can impact the industry. I hope someone takes on the project. It will be slow on the upstart, but I think ultimately it benefits the end user as well as the brush manufacturer. Anytime it’s easy for the “user”, the supplier wins.

Lol yeah, Some do, most don't. What company is it? When treated correctly by the brush maker they rarely have a Scent. The scent will go away after a couple uses.

my Simpson T3 Trafalgar is the best brush on the market today it's like buying a $200 badger hairbrush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair can, cheap to buy, i have owned it for 5 years with no problems wheelchair Larry
