As a prank, I once gave them a call. The woman I spoke with kept trying to see if I was having issues in my life and I wasn't, I just was asking for more information about them. I had to struggle to find any major conflicts in my life that she seemingly wanted to hear about (my life isn't perfect but I'm quite the strong person and can find my own solutions or time itself is the solution. I didn't have anything major going on in my life). Everything I said to her was somehow twisted to be the fault of my family. I lived with my mom and her boyfriend at the time and while I wasn't crazy about the boyfriend, I took offense to her trying to tell me my mom was the source of my issues. I knew what they were trying to do, cut me off from her, and realizing what was going on, I hung up. It felt...like something out of the Twilight Zone, perhaps? I can see how they could easily rope someone less susceptible in and distance them from their loved ones and hold them emotionally hostage. Very odd and scary to actually be a witness to how it could happen.
@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley 4 жыл бұрын
@Nolan Is Innocent Dividing me from my family was NOT what I was expecting. You can join a religion (I would not call them a religion though, this is a cult. Which, one might say all religions are but I'm not going to go down that route) and not be emotionally manipulated into pushing away your family. Frankly, both then and now, I'm not crazy about religion but I wanted to actually speak with a representative directly just to hear what they had to say. The prank part was calling with no intention of joining, but still being respectful and asking actual questions. The shock was the emotional manipulation of which I wasn't aware of at the time as being one of their practices. One addition after rereading my original comment: I think you may have misunderstood as to if I knew they were going to be emotionally manipulative before making the call, but I wasn't. I was about 19 at the time and I think my extent of knowledge of Scientology at that moment revolved around theories on space that sounded more like it belonged in a movie (but I take that with a grain of salt as the media's portrayal and exaggeration on Scientology. Yes, I'm actually giving them the benefit of the doubt) but predominately that giving money and a lot of it was a very important thing. Being told to shut out those that don't respect your beliefs is one thing...but to instantly jump to actively saying, regardless of the matter, that I need to cut my mom out of my life? Yes, I was taken aback by that. That's a very large jump and some major assumptions being made.

In comparison to above-mentioned docs, and also other docs noted by commenters here, -- it doesn't carry weight. It's a good documentary, yes, but when comparing it to the insight and levels of depth in the other mentioned documentaries - it empty fluff. Doesn't mean it's bad, just means it's not a top doc contender.
@SweetSirenia
@SweetSirenia 4 жыл бұрын
@@iAmiSaid I respect your view, but I've never quite understood why people see it as fluff. It's a damning portrait of capitalist excess and the mindset of the ultra-wealthy. Greenfield doesn't weigh the viewer down with investigative reporting or facts and figures; instead, she lets the subjects hang themselves before an audience. It's such a perfect film for understanding the Great Recession. But again, I respect your view.

It label it good. But you really have to understand narcissists. It's not the behavior because of money, it's because they get money by people letting them get their way in life. People equate a larger than life persona as a leader, and more capable than others. It's exaggerated tho. Their often very successful, and many are screwing up companies. That's why that guy failed. The banks gave him leverage to get loans, and he didn't understand that doesn't mean he's smart. He overleverage which is bad management. (Too much debt to liquid assets) The banks got the payments and the property, because they have rules.

There are sooo many reasons why "13th" is one of the best documentaries of all time (of which include Ava Duvernay who directed "Selma" and "When They See Us"). But also the timing of that documentary added to it. It came out in October 2016, one month before the divisive 2016 election, and watching it back then make you feel so much hatred towards an American political and justice system that has not learned its lesson to this day...

True. Living in Wisconsin at that time was a whole nother thing realizing how corrupt the WI system especially is. Plus, you would go to literally any bar or pub and people of all ages would have their own theories. It was magical. Being able to sit down and jump into a conversation with strangers of all ages and it not being weird.

Its a horribly done documentary and its wrought with confirmation bias. Look up and read about the evidence the doc ignores and tell me Avery is innocent. A good documentary should look at both sides of the story.

“It’s a girl” was my favorite doc of the decade. It’s about how all countries in the world treat women. It even talks about how they kill female babies if they are unwanted. It’s sad and an eye opener.
