I had the unbelievable experience of jamming with Eric and Jimi in NYC for a couple hours. The NYPD broke it up, as was after midnight and my band's loft was a few doors down from a firehouse. We were keeping them awake. At that point, I thought they were equally incredible guitarists. Jimi was such a terrible loss.

The list comes very much from the Blues-rock-Metal Genre. To me, I miss Les Paul, who was not only the Investor of the iconic single cut solid body guitar and the multitrack recording system, but also was a master of virtuos guitar playing. His influence on modern music can‘t be overestimated. Going on to rockabilly I thing Brian Setzer is the man with his incredible minimalistic Stray Cats! Just wonderful. Coming to Rock-Pop, I think „the Edge“ needs to be mentioned. He is an 28:00 absolute master of the delay pedal, playing rhythm and solo at the same time. No one has ever been able to copy his style. And did. you ever see Jeff Healey? That blind guy with this great empathy and absolute unique technique! Watch him on KZfaq playing „While my guitar gently weeps“! Outrageous! Thanks for reading ! For me the truest mark of a great guitarist is when you can instantly identify who’s playing no matter what guitar is being used or whether it’s that person’s own music or someone else’s. By that definition, David Gilmour is right at the top of the list. While he’s known for mostly playing Strats, David could play a spoon and still sound like himself. And whether it’s Pink Floyd, his solo work or as a session musician for someone else, you know immediately that it’s David Gilmour on guitar. Perfect example, No More Lonely Nights, by Paul McCartney.

@@stanclips8227 Yep, the BEST. If not just for the sure number of great riffs. The producing of all of the great music, especially at the time was pure genius also. We were and still are lucky to be able to enjoy the mastery.

Where's David Gilmour? Where's Steve Howe? Where's Steve Hackett? I hate lists that put Jimmy Hendrix at #1. He doesn't deserve that spot.

There are many who could be on this list, still it is accurate list and everyone deserve their place. Still I would emphasize how extremely underrated is Frank Zappa. If you just listen playlist of his purely instrumental songs you get the better picture. His knowledge both theoretically and practically seems to be unlimited, his phrasing, feel and seemingly endlessly creative approach both to the rhythm and solo is just amazing. He manage to channelize all complex notes and scales into beautiful harmony and substance. He really did not need any shredders in his band as he is himself a master.
