For this list, we’ll be looking at iconic gaming antagonists and their heinous actions that made us want to defeat them. Since we’ll be talking openly about game storylines, we’re issuing a spoiler warning. Our countdown includes Zeus from the “God of War” Series (2005-), Shao Kahn from the “Mortal Kombat” Series (1992-2019), Frau Engel from the “Wolfenstein” Series (1981-), Flowey from “Undertale” (2015), and more! This definitely feels more like top 20 “most iconic” than 20 “best,” which isn’t necessarily a bad thing… there are just a lot of video game villains that are a lot better written and more interesting but not as well known outside of gaming.

Ironic is another way of saying “best”. They won’t be considered ironic if their concepts weren’t great and better than others. You can lose people by being too “well-written” if your concept isn’t simple to understand to begin with.

Yeah I agree. Michael Bell from RDR2 was a heck of a bad guy, but he's been in one game...opposed to Bowser or Ganon. I do agree with Vaas being one of the best and iconic regardless of the fact he was only in about a half a game though!

@@lavenderpants8695 I haven’t played red dead 2 but want to get around to it. personally I would have chosen prophet of truth from halo, Kreia/sion/Nihilus from KOTOR 2, any of the final case Ace Attorney villains, and others

Vergil is my favorite. He never gives up on his quest to obtain power. He embraces his demon side, his always serious, and he has good taunts like " Where Your Motivation".

My honorable mention: Joker (Batman Arkham series) He is such a memorable villain for all Batman Arkham fans, as he is menacingly evil and always creates new plans to torment both Gotham and the Dark Knight. Ghetis (Pokémon Black and White series) He is probably my favorite Pokémon villain as he always puts a great threat to the player and the Unova region. I was surprised to see how dark Ghetis' storyline was, specifically when he revealed the truth about N. Definitely an impressive villain for a Pokémon game.

I’m glad to see Handsome Jack on the list, but bummed that Doctor Nefarious didn’t make the cut. The crazy mad man was able to turn a couple of planets filled with squishy living creatures into robots (and several other fun tidbits that involve space, time, and reality).

Ganon has been stabbed in the head/stomach and sealed away many times by gods with the help from Link, but over time, no matter what they do he breaks out. Ganon really is the definition of the triforce of power.

@@JamesDavy2009 Well it's more of the Triforce of Power keeping him in check. If you take it from him, you can permeantly kill him off. That's why when he was stripped of it in Wind Waker in Link killed him at the end, he didn't appear anymore in that timeline (since Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks had completely new and different villains)

Honourable mention: Emet Selch (ffxiv). Charming, manipulative. Yes, he plots to kill you and everyone you hold dear, but he's so passionate about his ideals that you can't help but respect him.

Yes the crooked man is such a good one, telltale have some great villains in their games, one of my favourites is Carver from season 2 of the walking dead - his character fit the antagonist role perfectly I thought

Handsome Jack prolly has to be one of my all time favs. Hes incredibly funny while simultaneously being downright ruthless and even evil at times. He was so memorable with so many great lines like “oh god these pretzels suck” 😂👏🏻

Well he wasn’t the big bad of the game it was Frank Fontaine/Atlas but I do get what you’re saying it’s always weird how people forget about Andrew Ryan in best gaming characters and villains

I think it may be because Ryan and Atlas/Fontaine shared a lot of the screen/voice time and might count as a duo type antagonist situation, even though Ryan had the big reveal.

@jayce Kibler Andrew Ryan is a billionaire in the the in the 1940s he eventually wants to make a city underwater where it is untuched by what he calls parasites aka people he believes is ruining the world at first he is seen as the main villain of the game in present time of 1960 but the real main villain is a guy named Frank Fontaine who was Ryan main rival in the underwater city eventually Frank faked his own death and made a new persona of atlas who he uses to take control of the city and uses the main character of the game to do it eventually atlas betrays you and you find out everything atlas has told you was just to get to Ryan and Jill him so Frank could rule the city I know this was very long but I highly recommend playing the game and watching the would you kindly scene which is considered to be the best betrayal in all of gaming

@@nicholasmurray7505 that was long, but i appreciate the detail in your comment. intriguing story, but the gameplay mechanics have turned me off forever from the series. from your description though, i think its right that he wasnt included on the list. the other bosses on the list seemed way better than some petty rivalry

Really hope Wind Waker and Twilight Princess get announced for the switch even if the release date is sometime in the spring or summer of next year. Cause it would be a crime for both those games to be the only main console Zelda games to not be on the switch.

I would put Micah Bell on here. The things he does are incredibly fucked up but he knows exactly what he is doing and is a complete psychopath and enjoys. Also, the way that he manipulates and gaslights Dutch into not trusting Arthur anymore and into taking on riskier jobs is ultimately what led to the downfall of the game. He used Dutch as his puppet to emotionally manipulate and I though that was really fucked up and interesting. A great villain that has no redeeming qualities but is really fascinating and well developed nonetheless. Oh and yes of course his racism and the creepy way in which he treats women are yet another layer that show just how much of a monster Micah truly is.

@@jimmymurphy898 ye but the story behind his turning is what is important for me it was never about Micah he was just so well written to be hated Dutch will be hated and in the end you hate him so much more than Micah because you genuinely didn’t see it coming (only if you haven’t played rdr1 but still knowing how he turned makes it so much more obvious why John didn’t care anymore about the gang)

I do not care what people said but Nintendo needs to consider the Age of Calamity timeline canon. We have seen how time can be split into two through The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Sot it's very oblivious that time travel has become a part of the Legend of Zelda lore/mythology. Depending on which time frame the player chooses, it would be fun to explore infinite possibilities like see the Champions of Hyrule are alive in the AoC timeline. I can hope we get a side quest in BOTW2 where we fight fight alongside with the current Champions (Riju, Teba, Sidon and Yunobo) to protect their respective villages / domains from monsters and share their memories from events of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

@Light Deity To each their own. I felt it had the weakest story. Wind waker was much better with its heavy themes of letting go of the past and moving on. The final encounter with ganondorf made it all worth it. Same with Twilight princess. AoC was not what nintendo promised. They said they would show what happened before the events of Botw yet it was the exact opposite. It was way too upbeat for something that was meant to be very dark

Lord Clyde from Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense is underrated. He’s the CEO of the OMAR empire, the leader of the Coyotes and uses the chain lightning special in his Excelsior Stretch. He’s very awesome!

@@jaycekibler1897 I'm playing the first one at the moment for the first time. The gameplay's alright, but there's a reason the setting and characters are always what get talked about. Rapture and its story are by far the most interesting aspects.

Why? He's been the villain in a lot of games but he doesn't really have any depth, charisma, or intimidation factor. Andrew Ryan, Alma, Jon Irenicus were all left off the list and were far better villians.

Magus isn’t much of a villain since he wanted to summon Lavos just to destroy him, and the fact that he would join you later in the game.

@@aaronrose3460 He's one of those characters that starts as a villain but then as you learn more about him you realise he isn't a villain, just misunderstood. Magus' arc completely changes how the player sees them by the end of the game and that's what I really like about him.

Uka Uka (he was always intended to overshadow Dr. Cortex in evil factor), Mephiles the Dark, Dr. Weil (he's actually called Dr. Vile in the Japanese version; he is truly deplorable and unlike Sigma doesn't constantly come back), Dark Samus, Vladimir Makarov, Dr. Nefarious, Raydrik (Thracia 776; while he dies as a coward, he never less gets under your skin enough you want to hate him), Ashnard (Path of Radiance), M. Bison... Fawful (Mario&Luigi series), Dimentio (Super Paper Mario), Ridley, Kefka, Kuja (Final Fantasy), Andrew Ryan, Darkrai (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky), Clockwerk, Dr. M (Sly Cooper), Count Veger, Dracula (Castlevania), Heihachi Mishima, Saya (Namco x Capcom), Magalor (Kirby)... King Porky (Mother 3), Adachi (Persona 4), Masayoshi Shido, Nyarlathotep (Persona 2), King K' Rool, Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising), King Boo (there are multiple King Boos, but the most demented one is from Luigi's Mansion), Achi (Sin&Punishment), Aparoid Queen, and Wilhelm (Xenosaga).

It speaks volumes to how good of a villian Vaas was when he's one of the best of all time and he wasn't even the big bad guy in his own game. He deserved a much better boss fight and end than he deserved!

Sephiroth Final Fantasy 7: ....After the "Events" of Disk 1 you'll want to finish the whole game just to find Sephitoth and get revenge.

King Dedede from the Kirby franchises 5. Mewtwo from the Pokémon franchises 6. Wolf O'Donnell from the Star Fox franchises 7. Black Shadow from the F-Zero franchises I also love Revolver Ocelot from the Metal Gear Solid franchises and Jetstream Sam from MG Rising: Revengeance, Shang Tsung from the Mortal Kombat franchises, Erol from the Jak and Daxter franchises and Amanda Evert from the Tomb Raider franchises.

Leo Kasper from Manhunt 2 is pretty vile. An utterly ruthless former government assassin who's psyche was implanted into a mild mannered scientist as part of a convoluted plan to create the perfect untraceable assassin. Unfortunately Leo proved uncontrollable and seeks to become a prolific serial killer after performing his personality takeover. A true maniac who also feigns friendship all while planning to unleash chaos.

My favourite villain out of everyone in this video has gotta be Albert Wesker. The guy’s a literal badass and the only badass who looks good in sunglasses and an overcoat. His speed, strength, intelligence and vibe around him makes him feel like a great, superior villain who I feel like is too strong for his own universe, which is why he was killed by Chris Redfield’s plot armor. 😂

Jacqueline Natla from the Tomb Raider franchise deserves an honorable mention. She was the og villain, she appreared in more than one TR game unlike the other baddies, she's pure evil and she's just iconic to the franchise. Also why was Dr. Neo Cortex so low on the list?

One of my honorable mentions for a great video game villian has to be junko enoshima from the danganronpa games Major spoilers for danganronpa She's very intelligent and had the insanity to betray and kill her sister for the sake of her despair and she managed to get a whole class to follow her orders and managed to get a kid to make her monokumas and along with her sister trapped the cast of the first game for her killing game and had a lot of tatics for all of the murders in the first game to occur and her personalities she created from bordem provide a lot of entertainment in the game and I thank Amanda Celine Miller and Erin Fitzgerald for voicing her

Honorable mention: Masayoshi Shido from Persona 5. He pulled the strings from behind the scenes since the beginning and had a penultimate boss fight that lasted at least a half an hour. Sure, he is only in one game but the impact he had on the overall story line was far-reaching and the hype his introduction and other events that happened brought on really sold it for me.

Sephiroth is the greatest villian of all time, with some of the best lore, best backstory, best drip, best theme music, best villany, best insanity...he checks every box for a really good villian. And we get to see the journey, not just have it told to us, we get to see his arc. He's a personal villan, not just a villan. I both love, and am immensely terrified of Sephiroth. Anyone who can manipulate an alien's mind from across a planet, create illusions in people's minds, use telekenesis, hurl planets, destroy solar systems and reality itself...yeah he's gonna be hard to beat

Would have moved Eggman higher, ditched Frau, and added in Lich King. Though some others that stand out are Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde. Dracula, Giovanni, and Dr. Nefarious to name a few. Lists like this need a top 50.

Imo Robitnik/Eggman, Bison/Vega, Sephiroth, Bowser and Ganon are the ones that every gamer knows even of they didn't play any game in the franchise. And the 5 of them are the ones that transcend the media of gaming.
