I always felt with lines like "I just can't look, it's killing me and taking control' "Jealousy, turning saints into the sea" and "choking up your alibis" and "that's just the price I pay" meant that after the character in the song (Mr. Brightside) found her cheating he let his impulse take control and he killed them

I remember blasting "Hey Ya" in Mexico with my (ex) girl and her family in the car, who all only spoke Spanish. They were all loving it and asking me to turn it up and play it again. TBH I kinda expected Carless Whisper to be on this list, mainly because the tone and overall feel of the song sounds very romantic and sensual, especially the iconic saxophone solo (which is often used in many romantic and sexy movie scenes), but if you've payed attention to the lyrics, you already know just how sad and depressing the song truly is.

@Jah_LEASE_yah

@@jasminejohnston6393 I wouldn't call it a "bad" subject. Dark yes, but its normal for people to contemplate growing old and passing away even at a young age. I think their grandmother passed away around the same time they wrote this song so that might be what inspired them to think about their own mortality. Also, they were definitely mature for their age. Their first three albums have a lot of deep songs on them that sound really pop and happy but are about deep subject matter, all songs they wrote when they were still minors.

I remember being a kid in the 80s and watching M*A*S*H and humming along with the theme song. Only years later, when I was about 20, did I learn that there were actual lyrics to the song that were not very pleasant and the song’s title is actually called Suicide is Painless. That was a wild realization that my favorite TV theme song was actually about a man contemplating ending his own life. However, the real kicker comes when you realize the lyrics were written by the singer’s 14 year old son.

@@punkwrestle My guess as a musician - when you do weddings and private parties, you get paid a lot, and if the bride or the person paying you has a request, you do it, and you do it their way. That's part of the reason for the higher fees for those shows. (I did a wedding once where we had to learn 12 new songs for the bride. Think of the hourly pay for 4 guys learning 12 new songs and you'll see that triple pay for weddings is really not a bad deal.) I'm guessing the birthday boy preferred it that way.

@@punkwrestle Oh I think that's weird too, but y'know, they're paying. And no, she wasn't a bridezilla at all. We never met her until the gig. Our agent just gave us the list. She nailed it during 'Bad Moon Rising': "catchy vocals." Sometimes I think it's more about the musicality of the lyrics and not the lyrics themselves/their meaning. You enjoy singing along with the melody and either don't actually pay attention to the content of what you're singing or simply set it aside.

Fairly unknown one outside of the UK but the Manic Street Preacher’s “Your love alone is not enough”. The musicality of the song seems to suggest that it’s a upbeat love song but the song’s title is actually the last line of a friend’s suicide note and the song talks about how the band wish they did more to help this person during their time of need
