The woman laughingly saying "you're afraid of him, aren't ya?" Uh, yeah. He just smashed a window in order to get close enough to attack a random person. Chimps are one of the few animals that are intelligent enough to be capable of cruelty, and if you've ever seen the results of a chimp attack, it is absolutely brutal.

The worst thing is that chimps are very unlikely to harm you if you're actually in their habitat as a human. If you watch that Chimp netflix documentary and interviews with scientists and producers who made it, it shows they'll pretty much ignore you if you're in their habitat. Take them out of it and keep them confined and they're very different. Moral of the story, let them be what they are and they're fine. But that leads back to their intelligence, they fully understand keeping them captive is wrong. They fully understand if you're in their environment and mean no harm, they'll ignore you.

I hear the story about chimps.. the one chimp used to have an owner. .. the owner would come give him birthday cakes and not get one for all the other chimps. One day the other chimps, saw the cake that wasn't for them, got jealous and fucked the chimp and the guy up I believe. Chimps are capable of some pretty intricate emotions, violence and reason for said violence.

Louis is a clever interviewer, he'll often asks questions that seem stupid but he does it to provoke some kind of a reaction. He'll also often not say anything in response to his questions, so that the person he's interviewing feels compelled to keep talking and possibly reveal stuff they wouldn't ordinarily say. The clever part is knowing when to use these tactics.

@@Aivottaja you can call it that, but in all louis doc/interviews you're waiting for him to get to the hard biting questions. He builds up his questions, probably purposefully naively. If he drops in the big knee jerk reaction questions too early it would scare off the interviewee to answer more.

Louis Theroux is such a good interviewer and how he stays so calm is incredible. He also points out the flaws in the arguments of small minded people so easily and is so polite even when being put in danger and being told terrifying things. He approached things open minded and you can tell he genuinely tries to understand and not mock people, even when they are disrespectful to him and hold questionable beliefs, to say the least.

I love Louis Theroux to bits. He puts himself into life-threatening situations that make you wonder whether he is a slave to entertaining his viewers - or whether he truly has a death wish? He never shows he's scared of any of the crazy places he visits (Johannesburg - jeezus?!!!) and he is so polite and self-deprecating he doesn't really upset anyone, not even that crazy Wesboro' "church" mob who invited him back three times. It's hard not to be impressed by this lovely man.

In that Pedophile episode, Louis found that one of the pedo's had a picture of a young male dancer in tights on his wall and pointed it out to the staff. The pedo said: "I just like the shape of the dancer" or something like that. Yeah right... So Louis brought it up to the staff and the staff all of a sudden decided it was inappropriate and they decided to take it down. Yeah, no sh!t it's inappropriate. That whole episode was an uncomfortable watch, but that stuck with me as it showed how something can seem right from the people inside a situation and then an outside person gives a completely different perspective on how wrong something actually is.

He's super disarming and has a way of coming off as naive and innocent when he's interviewing people that just catches them off guard and makes them open up even on difficult topics. As an avid self-proclaimed Documentary Geek, Louis is one of my favourite documentary makers. He rarely goes in with the killer questions although sometimes, he has no other option, taking the 'Are you a p....' question he asked Savile as a prime example. He generally always goes in with a softly softly approach, allowing people to feel comfortable with the conversation whilst gradually giving the more and more rope on which they inevitably hang themselves with. Likewise, if he's covering topics such as Mental Health or Mothers who struggle to bond with their children, his level of empathy without being either patronising or judgemental is joy to watch. I call him a fence sitter and that's how all good Documentary makers should be, leave your own opinions and judgements at home, no matter how strongly you feel about the subject and allow them to take the narrative in their direction. I did shake my head however when he did the Documentary on Scientology. I've seen 100's on that cult and every one turns out the same; Scientology just put up a brick wall and no matter what, no one can even ask intelligent questions let alone get a vaguely intelligent answer from them. They cost John Sweeney, an equally fantastic Documentary maker/Investigative Reporter his career on the BBC in the early 2000's. he self funds a lot of his work now and is doing some great work.

Louis is a brave guy with big balls. A real journalist that goes out and discovers real stories and shows them unbiased. These journalists are becoming extinct as many just work from home, spreading fake news on the internet they've read and dont get off thier asses. Louis, your a star. He should be recognised by magnum agency for his videography work.

For me the most terrifying/hilariously inappropriate moment was in A place for Pedophiles. There’s a moment when the inmates are setting up for a Halloween party and there’s some of the inmates around a piano singing The Addams Family’s theme tune, the line that stands out is “we’re creepy and we’re kooky”

His documentary on Scientology is nothing short of genius. He turned all their ridiculous tactics around on them. He clearly had done his homework on their methods - even if that was just watching the failed BBC documentary - and he came out on top. It was a pleasure to watch.

the african game episode is my favorite, it's funny how clueless louie is at times (not to say his line of work could ever be done safely), curiosity leads him I'd rather be near lions than any pet chimp, those chimp owners are delusional, living on borrowed time, his trips to Africa have to be the most dangerous things he's ever done, really lucky he's still alive, the neo-nazis and convicts and thugs are nothing compared to how dangerous it is for him to be in those poor African areas
@brettpilkington9539

He's not clueless, do you think the bbc just suddenly turns up one day with a camera? They do months and months of intense research before they even meet anyone. He acts naive to elicit answers.
