binding of isaac was boring tbh. i fully understand why it's not on here.

@@phenel what made that game boring for you? Not enough combos? Not enough characters or items? Or maybe the boss variety?

@@nozone58 honestly it felt clunky, I truly think it's just a product of its time. Controlling the character, even after a few hours just didn't feel great. Much in the same way that I didn't like helldivers 2 (never played the first one), it felt weird to move around in. I really like a nice fluid feeling to movement. Ror2 has that feeling. Tiny rogues has that feeling. But yeah it's just a mechanical to brain interface mismatch lol. It makes me disinterested and that results in me feeling bored.

@@phenel thats very interesting, i always personaly felt that isaac is very responsive, many times i even manage to dodge projectiles at the last second which i feel like i shouldnt have been able to dodge, but the hitboxes are done so well that you do dodge it. But i understand that if the movement isnt to your liking, the fact that the game has over 500 items, 1000 combos and hundreds of bosses is something that you just cant enjoy due to the movement

To be fair, there are so many great roguelike/lites and I feel like new ones keep coming out every week, it feels impossible to put all of them on a single list xD one thing I know for sure is that the genre, but indie games in general, are more prosperous than in a long time

@@nicknickson3650 Yeah, just started that one today, it's amazing so far! Combat is smooth and feels really good overall (especially yeeting off enemies with the hammer rn xD), the progression and moveset remind me of Hades, which is a big plus, and I love the animal and spiritual themes that it takes on. Quite well made, I highly recommend it, especially now that it's on sale

Blade Assault, same publisher as Skul and also a 2D platformer but more of an emphasis on progression, I actually personally prefer it to Skul, South Korean developers are really starting to pump out more of these indie retro style 2D platformer roguelites

@@JoelRPG A shame. I found myself majorly disappointed with Blazblue Entropy Effect once it got out of early access. It turned into a bootleg side-scrolling Hades with a massive difficulty spike of a final boss while the rest of the game is mind-numbingly easy. Oblivion Override is a lot more original and much better balanced/optimized. And the combat is far more fluid.

I mentioned it in another post. Great game! Underrated but well it has 1200+ reviews on steam so it still did pretty well.

Skill transfers from one roguelike to another, especially action ones I find.

This only holds true for a couple of roguelikes I've found. Once you start to get into the genre, the skills very much transfer from game to game.

you could say that for rpg's too, not in a skill sense but a content sense. you could only compare games that you completed 100% but that's not necesarily true because a game that for the majority is bad but has one good part is still a bad game. Normally around 10 hours is enough of an indication to see wether a game is good or not

hades is the best one. roguelikes can be significantly different, what they have in common is that they are much more challenging than the average game and when you die your run ends and you start over from the beginning. in most you gradually unlock permanent upgrades to help you get a little further. like in hades you start out with one weapon and not much health. as you play you unlock 5 more weapons and upgrade your max health until eventually it's double your health at the start. it's still challenging but it's so fun and addictive you won't even mind dying that much. it's only $25, i just bought it s few weeks ago and would gladly have paid double that, it's such an amazing game. they're working on a hades 2 as we speak too, so if you like it as much as me you'll have something to look forward to.

@@SkitZHitZ after reading your comment i did i quick search and found that i already own deep rock galactic but never played it. it was a free monthly game on playstation that i added to my library but never played. might have to try it out soon.

Roguelikes are just games with permadeath and procedural generation, we need to have less gate keeping and more variety, brotato is simply a bullet heaven roguelike, also referred to as a horde survivor Roguelike or an auto shooter Roguelike, it's just another sub genre of Roguelikes, most types of gameplay can be applied to the genre, whether it be 3P shooters, bullet heavens, 2D platformers, twin stick shooters, isometric action RPGs, 2D sidescrollers, shmups, metroidvanias, soulslikes, FPS, boomer shooters, beat em ups, survival, dungeon crawlers, turn based RPGs, 3P action RPGs, among many others, a lot of older indie developers tried to gate keep the genre with the Berlin interpretation, but that clearly didn't work, thank god, the genre would have died out long ago if it did, gate keeping stifles innovation and variety, strict rules have no place in an art form like gaming, i could understand a short list of loosely defined and purposely vauge rules but the Berlin interpretation was just a dumb idea in the first place
