With the new bullet offerings and some hot loadings (handloading) a .308 is just barely below a 30'06 (that's why you and I have one). And shot placement is EVERYTHING! I know how you feel about selling that model 70..... Been there, done that (not with a 70, but a mint .300 Weatherby that would core an apple @200yds) The emptiness never goes away!

@@ChukesOutdoorAdventures Absolutely, and the .308 (at least mine) is very accurate out past where "most" hunters will ever shoot. It just takes finding the right bullet/load combo. You're welcome. Great channel! 👍

@@unitedstatesirie7431 Nice 👍. My original plans was to discard the original stock, and fashion a spartanesq type of folding stock, just big enough to get a forward hand on, and a small pistol grip, with a 3/8th" wire for the butt portion. I figured I would weld up the wire portion to a hinge and countersink 2 of those really strong magnets, one on the side of the forward portion to hold it closed when folded, and the other on the hinge to hold it open. It would be about the smallest, lightest package I could think of....something along the lines of a little M4 survival rifle. And I would make a small pouch that hangs on the wire butt portion for spare ammo ect. Like the ones on the M1 carbine paratrooper. Should be under 3 pounds all up, or just a scratch over with 50 or so rounds and a really light scope.....but trim and compact as carrying nothing at all...lol

For me, I carry a 5 inch 460 smith in a chest rig. For a rifle I have 7mm mag with either a 160 or 168 grain barnes lrx, its about the same recoil as a 30-06 shooting 180s with some better ballistics. I think personally I would choose my 410 over a 12ga reason I'd do that is I usually have my monster revolver in tow. I think no one would argue that a 10/22 is a great tool to have practically anywhere. This has been my load out for living up here in alaska for quite some time.

Good choices. Excellent points on the versatility of the shotgun and the advantages of the 10mm or other pistols over a heavy recoiling revolver. My rifle choice just might be my M1A Scout, eslecially for defense/survival more so than hunting, and damn the weight. Of the hamdguns i have, if i had moved up there, my 686 with careful ammo choice would have been my woods handgun until i found something i liked better (which might not happen; it is an excellent gun, and we go back 31 years together come late August). For an auto, i might go with my 5" Kimber unless/until i got a 10mm. Somebody makes a 255 hard cast in 45 ACP; I forget who. Another good woods/survival gun would be a 357 lever gun like my Marlin. Originally with a Williams peep sight and now a Weaver 1-3x. I call it the Hillbilly Patrol Rifle. Accurate, easy to use, good ballistics, and a good centerfire to intro new shooters. Fortunately, we are not limited to only 4 choices. Obviously a 45-70 or 444 Marlin is a great idea in bear country. A dark horse candidate might be the Hi Point 10 mm carbine. Saw them at SW in Wasilla about 4 yrs ago for $350. Might be a good choice for someone just starting out into guns, for home defense and animal defense. A good sling and a red dot, and you are set. Anyway, just a few thoughts. Always enjoy your videos. Small ray of hope for us Kalifornia dwellers: last night i was on the DOJ website updating my address so i can buy ammo (required under our onerous ammo purchase law now). I noticed on the handgun roster that some new models have been added, apparently as a result of a lawsuit against Bonta. Among those added were 2 Hellcats, S&W Victory 22, 2 Sig P320's, ine of the Turkish Hi-Power copies (which probably does have a mag disconnect) and several XD-M 9mm models. I hope the 10mm is coming. But if DOJ was forced to add newer models without mag disconnect "safeties", that is a good thing. Our choices will expand. I think a federal judge already ruled against the roster completely, but of course our AG appealed, and the Ninth Circus grants an automatic stay pending appeal (favoritism toward the govt), so the roster stands for now. But maybe this is a sign of changes to come. Heaven knows we need some hope down here. Stay safe

Great choices, Chuke! What do you think about an AR10 as an all around gun? Short, powerful, high capacity, can be used for hunting and/or defense.
@jeffbrooks8288
@jeffbrooks8288 14 күн бұрын
I’m not Chuke, but I’ll take a stab at an answer since I own two AR10’s. Since there’s no agreed upon mil spec for the AR10 as there is for the AR15, you have the issue of manufacturers specific parts to contend with. Plus there’s a wide range of quality. To keep it simple I think the following criteria apply if you want an AR10 to do the job. And yes, I believe it can do the job if you follow some basic rules: 1- Buy a good quality option such as the Aero Precision M5E1 and get yourself a backup BCG and charging handle. Although I own a Sig 716i Snakebite, I’d avoid the Sig because of the cost of the spare BCG. 2- I have .308 barrels in 16”, 18”, and 20” but all you need for this scenario is the 16” barrel. 3- personally I’d select a reasonably priced hunting style scope such as the Burris Fullfield E1 (4.5-14X42), or maybe the Burris Fullfield IV (2.5-10X42). The lower 2.5 power is great for close in hunting. If you use the Burris P.E.P.R. Scope Mount, then you can add a Burris Fastfire 3 red dot sight to the top of the scope mount so you’ll have both types of scopes. It makes for a very versatile aiming platform. Plus you can also add the Magpul offset iron sights so you have irons incase the optics fail. I’m a one gun do it all scenario I feel like all three sighting options cover all the bases. 4- Another great option with an AR10 is the ability to use a wide variety of sling options. I prefer the Magpul MS1 with QD swivel attachments. 5- You can also add a bipod easily if that’s on your wish list. The AR10 is easy to clean in the field with a bore snake and keep some Lucas CLP and a few lint free wipes in your pack. Aero Precision also offers a package of spare springs etc.

@@kevinberdineKevin, I forgot to add that with the AR10 you can go with lower capacity magazines for hunting so you’re not packing all the weight of 20 round .308 mags for example. I have a couple of 10 round mags for that purpose and perhaps someone offers a 5 round mag but I’ve never looked for one myself. In my bolt rifles setup for AICS mags I use 5 and 10 round mags. So I have to guess you can find AR10 mags in a 5 round capacity. I know it’s become vogue to use suppressors these days for hunting. I’m old school I guess and I haven’t yet made the jump. But I do invest in top quality brakes and I’ve had great success with the VG6 Epsilon 7.62 brakes. They keep muzzle rise to an absolute minimum. It’s loud as hell so protect your hearing. When hunting I strip off all the other tactical gear I haven’t even mentioned so it’s not too heavy. Then after hunting season is over, get your M5E1 back in the business it was designed for to keep the hearth and home safe and sound. After a lot of research I regret buying the Sig due to the cost of spare parts but otherwise the Sig is a great option. Between the Aero and Sig I’d choose the Aero every time. I know DPMS offers a decent AR10 and there are some high end very expensive options from Daniel Defense and LWRC and others. I felt like Aero checked all the boxes w/o breaking the bank and I owned a couple of their AR15’s that have been flawless. I feel like they are built every bit as well as my Daniel Defense AR15 for a lot less money. For what it’s worth.

After thinking about the 5 round magazine for hunting purposes I did a bunch of research and discovered the Lancer L7 AR-10 .308 / 7.62x51mm 5-Round mags that are highly respected in the hunting community. I ordered two of them and they fit and function perfectly in my Aero Precision M5E1 as well as my Sig 716i Snakebite. I ordered mine from the GunMag warehouse and several others commented how reliable and robust these mags are. I’m very impressed and happy to have some 5 round mags now for my AR10’s. FYI

Top 4 is not enough. A larger caliber rifle ( 338 mag) offers greater one shot stopping power. Same with 44 Mag handgun. Also there are rifle/pistol combos that use 44 Mag. Good for short range protection and hunting. Same I believe with 10 mm. 22 l r also has that versatility. You make good points, just need a top 10 list. 4 is not enough.

#1 its the pumpy. Id take my pumpy over anything else. Anything from Ptarmigan to bear. (Know why its call chicken alaska? , cause nobody could spell Ptarmigan) #2 a rifle, not hear to argue calibers. I like .300wm myself but to each his own they will all due. #3 a hand gun. Here caliber matters. We are talking about alaska so Nothing less than 10mm. And i really like a chest holster when out. Seams like the best spot. Doesn't get n the way of anything and is comfortable. #4 you ain't going to be carring anything more than that.

For the most part I agree about most of you selections but I'm also kind of old school to and I like a good 44 magnum revolver as my side arm of choice or a Desert Eagle 50 AE

I m sure the 10 mm is capable, But i have watched your videos of them blowing up even with kkm/ wolf barrels... So my picks Are the 480 ruger alaskan in a chest holster 480 ruger Redhawk 7.5 or 9.5 In that triple k torso rig Freedom arms model 83 454/ 45 lc A 475/ 500 linebaugh could also replace any of the above. Springfield armory hellcat pro, gives 17 rounds, Enuf for wolf skulls. 22 lr or 22 mag, got em both as sinle 9 and single 10. Marlin 444p outfitter Or a 50 alaskan takedown laced into the backpack framework Bolt gun would be a 338 win or 35 whelen. Yes, that means I have to reload my own supplies, But I'm Not wasting 500 rounds a day on target practice. I really like that 12 guage Remington tac 14 that followed me home.

I think 45-70 LA needs to be swapped for the 700 if we are talking "do all." 700 is more task specific in my view. I just added a Ranger Point Precision hand guard to my .44 Mag Henry X. I have a Diamond D buttcuff on there and a RPP quiver. Thar puts me with 20 Buffalo Bore Hardcast on board. Very manuverable, lots of firepower

Chuke, you almost made good sense in this video until you pulled up that polymer framed 10mm. When you show one that is an all-steel gun, I will congratulate you, Sir.

Not “do all” because you can’t hunt small game with a 10mm this is more of a “must own” list

I'd rather an M1 Carbine 30cal over a 22,because I'd rather not face a Bear with a 22, I'll take 2 44mag S&W 629classsic's over the 10mm Auto pistol and the 12gage shot gun, Because the 10mm Auto is not 100 % Reliable and the 12gage shot gun is too Heavy as far as I'm concerned, And maybe a 444 Marlin Actually the best do everything rifle would be a 444 Marland,,,,,because you can also use all the bullets made for the 44magnum,, choices like 125gr and 165gr up to 405gr 180gr 240gr 300gr ,, giving you a brush gun a Bear gun and a long Range varmint gun, long Range dear gun and small game, the 45 70 is 458cal Larger than the 45cal pistols,,big bore straight wall rounds are the best choice for everything if you got the right bullets, and a pump action rifle with big high capacity magazines with dubble pistol grips would be the best because you could shoot a lot of rounds fast and different power levels with no concern for feeding issues of automatics will have,
