I am hoping to start my instrument certificate soon and really appreciate this video with IFR questions. Very helpful material and great questions. At 12:30 you mention when you are technically supposed to fly a procedure turn when ATC does not state “straight-in” with the approach clearance. You’re absolutely right about ATC not expecting that technicality but if you feel the need, just ask! You’ll confuse us as you said but it will clear up everything and eliminate the risk 100%. Another instance in this great video regarding asking ATC I’d like to bring up is around 41:45 where you give the example of “crossing CABOB @ 17,000 descend and maintain 15,000 join the ZOMBZ arrival.” That’s a great example to discuss and again, if there’s ANY doubt or confusion, simply ask ATC to verify that. The two words that were not included were “descend via” but by saying “join the arrival,” this can create the slightest chance of ambiguity and possibly the pilot thinking they’re cleared to descend as charted. Asking ATC to verify is the quickest and easiest way to eliminate any confusion, and paperwork!

My question combines a couple of the questions and scenarios: Collin's question at 26:00 about entering via a racetrack in the maneuvering side: once outbound, are you considered "established" outbound even though you're not tracking the published radial? Why it matters: if there was a hard crossing altitude at the VOR (like the other approach), once ("established"?) outbound on a racetrack (off the published radial track) can you then start descent down to the published procedure turn step down altitude? Thank you.

At around 10:40, you talked about a scenario where you are in a holding pattern, and ATC clears you for the approach, yet they didn't say the words "straight in," therefore technically you must execute a procedure turn by crossing the fix, execute the proc. turn, then cross the fix again for final. This seems to contradict the AIM (2021) which states in 5-4-9(5) "The holding pattern maneuver is completed when the aircraft is established on the inbound course after executing the appropriate entry. If cleared for the approach prior to returning the holding fix, and the aircraft is at the prescribed altitude, additional circuits of the hlding pattern are not necessary nor expected by ATC." Can you help clear up this confusion?

I have a question, I have found a few approaches without an IAF, or the only IAF is also marked as an IF. What is up with that? KVUO LDA-A and KDLS LDA DME 25 are examples. I'm using FAA plates.

About the procedure turn entry in Marvell VOR, isn’t this the case when you need to be in a +/- 30° heading from the outbound track of the approach to be able to make a direct entry?

Yeah I thought so too. At least that is what the ICAO PANS-OPS say

@@DiogoMaxGamer I am from New Zealand but we also have that same rule, our terrain is fairly mountainous though so I think it makes sense for us to follow procedures more strictly, but that blew my mind seeing how you can cross a VOR and turn like 300 Degrees left to start the outbound!

@@TheWhiteOwl23 Same... In the FAA they have TERPS so probably different rule on this matter. Still probably isnt unsafe because they probably have higher safety margin for minimum altitude on that fix
