What are the different types of Cryptocurrency wallets?
There are several types of wallets that provide different ways to store and access your digital currency. Wallets can be broken down into three distinct categories - software, hardware, and paper. Software wallets can be a desktop, mobile or online.
Desktop: wallets are downloaded and installed on a PC or laptop. They are only accessible from the single computer in which they are downloaded. Desktop wallets offer one of the highest levels of security however if your computer is hacked or gets a virus there is the possibility that you may lose all your funds.
Online: wallets run on the cloud and are accessible from any computing device in any location. While they are more convenient to access, online wallets store your private keys online and are controlled by a third party which makes them more vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft.
Mobile: wallets run on an app on your phone and are useful because they can be used anywhere including retail stores. Mobile wallets are usually much smaller and simpler than desktop wallets because of the limited space available on a mobile.
Hardware: wallets differ from software wallets in that they store a user’s private keys on a hardware device like a USB. Although hardware wallets make transactions online, they are stored offline which delivers increased security. Hardware wallets can be compatible with several web interfaces and can support different currencies; it just depends on which one you decide to use. What’s more, making a transaction is easy. Users simply plug in their device to any internet enabled computer or device, enter a pin, send currency and confirm. Hardware wallets make it possible to easily transact while also keeping your money offline and away from danger.
Paper: wallets are easy to use and provide a very high level of security. While the term paper wallet can simply refer to a physical copy or printout of your public and private keys, it can also refer to a piece of software that is used to securely generate a pair of keys which are then printed. Using a paper wallet is relatively straightforward. Transferring Bitcoin or any other currency to your paper wallet is accomplished by the transfer of funds from your software wallet to the public address shown on your paper wallet. Alternatively, if you want to withdraw or spend currency, all you need to do is transfer funds from your paper wallet to your software wallet. This process, often referred to as ‘sweeping,’ can either be done manually by entering your private keys or by scanning the QR code on the paper wallet.

Great video Ameer! I just picked up the Ledger Nano S and am excited to try it out. I was wondering though - do you know if any wallets are part of publicly traded companies that can be bought on stock exchanges? I feel like as cryptocurrency becomes more mainstream the wallets will of course also become more mainstream, so it might be good to invest in some wallet companies early. Thanks!

I have a question Ameer? If you lose your cold hardware wallet like Trezor, but u can get your coins back. Doesn't that mean the privat key is with Trezor? In that case that would make it unsafe? Wouldn't it be safer to create several accounts and have them on a paper wallet and/or USB?

First, you have to create a paper wallet to send the token to (or set up software on your computer). That wallet must the same type that the token is compatible with. For example many tokens work with Etherium and would use an Etherium style wallet. There are programs for making paper wallet. If you buy crypto from a crypto ATM, they usually print a paper wallet for you. Before you buy any more crypto, make sure you understand how to move from one wallet to another.

Ameer, thanks. I agree one should use hardware wallets. I have Trezor. But, as far as I understand it, I can only put bitcoin, dash, zcash, and ETH (through a partnership using myetherwallet). What am I supposed to do with Factom, Potcoin, ETC, Storjcoin, or others I might want?

When I have a printed public and private key and want to use the bitcoin on it (eg send someone the coin) I have to use a software such as a Mycelium, it asks me for my private key (of course). But as soon as i type in the private key, how do i know that: 1. They will not get hacked and someone takes all private keys / mine too 2. They will not steal my key and use it some other day when I have 1 million on that address 3. Even if I delete that account from the wallet the private key has already "been online" and I bet that address is not safe anymore ?

Hugo Stiglitz your crypto currencies are actually not stored on the digital wallets. Its actually your private key which then has access to the Blockchain where on the distributed ledger (Blockchain) your currency can be used. So your money is more safe that way since it’s just the key. Then as long as you have the backup, security measures, and etc you will be safe.

The simple answer is to just get a hard wallet or cold storage. Coinbase has had bug issues and is subject to get hacked. Like he said I wouldn't trust more than a couple hundred in that wallet...

Or Your can Save larger amounts into a Trezor ($99), Keepkey, LedgerNano S to keep totally seperate from a PC or Mobile by storing it in USB or Gadget. Do you have any experience with the offline or software wallets like Armory or Strong Coin? I would like to use a hardware wallet, but in looking at reviews for both the Trezor and Nano Ledger s, I find that about 15% of buyers experience hardware failures, which scare the crap out of me as I would be storing significant dollar amounts on them.

A question though: if you do not recommend keeping money on exchanges, which does make sense of course. Then can you recommend the cost efficient way of coming to gdax to day trade and leaving at low withdrawal and deposit fees? I mean some small coins are alright, but if i want to trade BTC for example, sometimes I have to pay ip to $50 per day only to move mu funds from ledger to dgax and back. Any better way to do that?

Thanks for the video Ameer! I was hoping for some advice on wallets that I can use to store my bitcoin before this possible hard fork coming up on August 1. I have ordered a Ledger Nano S, but it looks like it won't be arriving until after August 1 (there was apparently a huge influx of orders). What wallets can we use to store bitcoin so that if the fork happens, our bitcoin will be split between the two chains after the fork? I have a couple of mobile wallets (Copay and Jaxx) - will those work? And if the fork happens will it literally be an overnight thing? Where before August 1 there is a certain amount of bitcoin, and then after the fork the wallet will just distribute between the two currencies accordingly (assuming that one is using a proper wallet that allows this split)? My first choice would be to just hold in the Ledger Nano S, but as I said, it looks like the delivery won't be in time. Thanks for all your great info!!

its still confusing:) so i just started couple weeks ago and invested in coins. got little over 3000 dollars in my poloniex account. many differnt altcoins : ETH, Lisk, golem, .... im doing trades maybe 2-3x/week. so youre suggesting that i store them all on a differnt wallet and only when i really want to trade i transfer back to poloniex get the trade down and then transfer everything back to my wallets? is there any wallet that has all the altcoins? thank you!!! sounds like a lot of work. maybe better for people with bigger investements also how safe is the 2-factor-authentification??? doesnt seem to be supersafe to me

Benjamin, you seem pretty crypto savy. Lets say i've purchased bitcoin thru coinbase and I want to keep it there because the value of the coin continues to rise. Can I put the bitcoin on a ledger nano and the see the value of the bitcoin rise or will it stop once I take it out of the Coinbase wallet?

George let's say you buy 0.154 of bitcoin worth 1,000 US dollars on coin base, you move the 0.154 to your hard wallet, bitcoin price sky rockets and so does the Amount of bitcoin you bought, so your 0.154 is now worth 2100

Can you help me understand something? Per your advice at 2:40, is BTC ever transferred? Or, like real estate, are we merely transferring the keys to one another? For example, a house stays in the same spot, but various owners will receive keys to the house throughout its existence. Does btc always stay within the blockchain and we merely pass around keys to it?

I am amazed that you left out KeepKey. Arguably the best hardware wallet. If people are going to keep any sizable amount of bitcoin they really should have it on a hardware wallet. Too much info on the other wallets which are not secure and I think is confusing newcomers which ostensibly is the reason you made the video.

Hi Ameer... first of all thanks for your video's. !! I do have a question about JAxx: I ordered two Ledger Nano S to have a hardware wallet but I have to wait at least until August for them to arrive. But since I already want to buy some CC's, I do want to store them on an online wallet until I receive the Ledgers. So I found out about JAxx. Can you laminate paper wallets!!? Asking since alot of altcoins dont have an official wallet ir aren't supported by hardware wallets so paper wallet is the only choice (budget wise)

Why would you pay so much money for a hard wallet? I can write all my codes for my accounts in a txt-file, encrypt that with a huge password and put it on multiple USB's.

Ok so when using paper wallet you always want to get a new passphrase everytime you spend. I understand. But isnt the ballet keeping you on same passphrase? Isnt this less secure? It states its encrypted passphrase, but i don’t understand, if your laptop or phone is hacked and you enter your passphrase from card, isnt this not secure sense your never changing the passphrase?

I notice that my wallet allows me to use Bitcoin Average, LocalBitcoins, Quadriga etc. They all have different values for the btc- CAD or USD, at the same time. Doesnt it make sense for me to use the one, at the time of making a purchase, that is giving me the most favorable exchange? Since there can be, and usually is, an outrageous difference between them all, what's the catch if I use the seemingly-superinflated one?Also, please, my online retailer says that I should add .001 BTC to the purchase price because there seems to be difficulties if we dont. Doesnt my wallet ALREADY take out preset fees? Thanks alot

With Trezor, what do you mean by "must have device to send bitcoins"? Do you mean you must physically have it with you if you want to transfer funds or you mean smth else?

yes, you must have the Trezor plugged in to your computer. When you "send", the actual review and approval happens on the device and you push the button on the device to confirm.
