What castles should you see when you visit South Wales. These are our Top 5 castles in the region.
All the castles in the list are at least 700 years old and these are our personal favourites. Other people will no doubt, have their own.
The castles can all be found in South Wales and the list only includes castles, no mansions, country houses or places called castles which aren’t actually castles or strongholds.
The list includes small and large castles, some of which are free and some charge an entrance fee.
When you visit South Wales you should try to see at least one of them.

@@flydriveexplore The stones at Ogmore Castle I know very well and have crossed them many times, also the nearby swinging Bridge, which really does swing!

The Mullet come up the mouth of the river Ogmore and it is said that it is possible to cross the river in front of Ogmore Castle on the heads of the fish instead of using the crossing stones at high tide. I've never tried that and I doubt that it is true.

I have visited all these Castles,four of them I think are among the best ever built.Only Cardiff I dont agree with,better I think was Raglan. Thanks for a good video.😀

I think that Caerphilly and Kidwelly castle are great to visit. One castle I think should have got on the list is Chepstow castle. Such a lovely setting beside the river

Very interesting! I think Caerphilly and Pembroke are competitive with Four Edward I castles in North Wales. And I also think Chepstow castle is another good castle, could put it on 4 or 5.

I've visited both Kidwelly & Carreg Cennen and loved the atmosphere, and buildings, Kidwelly has a lovely inner walled courtyard with immaculate grass to sit on where you can really absorb the feel of the place.. We were lucky enough some years ago to actually stay in a cottage at the base of Carreg Cennen, I have had two experiences on both occasions that we visited, and with my family, if interested in ghost stories let me know will divulge. Carreg Cennen is just stunning and although a ruin the views are a must, and at the time we had to walk through sheep to get up there. King Charles's fav castle too, and he regularly painted it apparently.

Yes, you can see why Carreg Cennen was voted the most romantic ruin in Wales.

You know, you grow up in South Wales and you accept what is around you, loving it but taking no notice of it, really. Then, you move away and realise what you once had on your doorstep and it becomes so precious and you talk about it and want to see it all again. Hence the reason I am saying this after moving away from South Wales. I wish I was back there!

It is an interesting place but the castle which we see today is slightly later (15th century I think) and built as a county seat. But agree it is an imposing structure and with a visit.

I went on a school trip around some of the castles in South Wales and was told by the guide that the leaning tower in Caerphilly was due to subsidance . Raglan Castle is worth a vist too and Chepstow

Yes, it is subsidence but it does look amazing and you can see why stories spread. Agree, Raglan is definitely worth a visit but it was a built a bit late for my list.

They would have loved you in ancient time Marcus.(Iam going to give you a castle) nice collections of fortifications there ,sunny always shines on you .got to say personally Kidwelly castle our favourite and princess gwenllian yes I like number 5 and number 6 my favourites I’ve been down that passage when younger.check out the story of princess gwenllian on KZfaq just type in her name.

Interesting Marcus. I think Caerphilly and Pembroke are my favourite. I've always liked Castell Coch. But sadly that wouldn't count being a rich man's folly rebuilt by William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute. It's still a majestic sight though.

Yes, Castell Coch is great but as you said, a rich man's folly. Although the site was a location of a 13th-century castle.
