Weekly fire alarm testing can be a chore but it's an absolute MUST to stay stay and compliant.
Hear from Paul Field, the Founding Director of WFP Fire & Security and a fire alarm expert with 25+ years' experience in the industry about the top 5 dos and don'ts of fire alarm testing.
Whether you're a fire safety rookie or a site manager with tons of experience, this video will give you some great pointers to help you keep your fire alarm and safety strategy in tip-top shape.
For instance, did you know you don't test the same call point every week, but a different one until you've tested them all and then rotate round them again? Paul also gives a pro tip on how to keep up with the ones you've tested already.
And did you know that whilst the fire alarm going off every week might be an annoyance to everyone, it's important they hear it? So you NEVER want to test it when the building's empty as this negates part of the point of doing it. People need to know what it sounds like so they associate it with the fire alarm, and it needs to be at the same time each week because if they hear that sound outside of that time, they need to know that means it's time to get up and leave!

There could be disablements and they should have been recorded in the log book along with the reason why the area was disabled. Generally disablements are temporary.

How can I find out my number for the ARC?
@PaulFieldWFP
@PaulFieldWFP 6 ай бұрын
Hi Adil, your Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) contract is generally (99% of the time) set up by your alarm maintenance company and they will have the telephone number you can call to put it [your alarm system] on test. Sometimes an App is available for testing your system and is handy if you are the person doing the weekly test.

Are there any courses to attend that explain fire panel testing as an engineer I’m new to the industry
@wirefreeprotection
@wirefreeprotection 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, We can certainly help with that and have a number of videos on our channel relating to fire alarm testing, although many are for customers' benefits rather than engineers. Does your current company support with training? We have an in-house training academy, as well as access to courses run by the Fire Industry Association. If you're looking for opportunities, please check out this page w-fp.co.uk/jobs/ Kind regards, Verity Head of Comms at WFP

How do i clear a prealarm error on the global addressable fire alarm plane ?
@wirefreeprotection
@wirefreeprotection 3 жыл бұрын
Pre-alarm isn’t generally an error, if the detector is Apollo, an intermittent (sometimes permanent) pre-alarm could be caused by the detector being contaminated (dirty). Pre-alarm is the state that the detector goes through prior to when it reaches full alarm and generally it’s there (in pre-alarm) for such a short time, that it isn’t displayed. If your case is as described, then changing the detector will often solve the issue. Make sure that the new detector is tested for correct operation and fault monitoring when it’s been fitted.

What are your opinion on Protec fire alarm systems?

Hi Sam, thank you for your comment and question! We don't use Protec because they are closed protocol systems, which means if you have one installed you are stuck with having to use Protec. Parts are quite expensive but more importantly, their customer support could do with improvement. Many, however, have found them to be a good, viable fire alarm product so it's often a matter of personal preference and experience! Is there anything we can further help you with, Sam? @@wirefreeprotection Protec have gone open protocol with their 6100 and 6500, and have pretty nice partner discounts. I'd check them out because it's pleasantly surprising. Tech support was also pretty good when I locked myself out of my 6100.

@@averagefirechannel I have experienced Protec and think that their equipment is good quality, however, perhaps the description of 'open protocol' is not clear enough, in reality all systems are closed protocol in the sense that they are based around running certain field devices. What we advocate is installing systems that 'any' competent contractor can work on, this means that the client has ultimate choice and is not limited to either the manufacturer or a number of agents, for example: Gent has a network of agents, but these are still limiting from a clients point of view and means that they have limited choice, because when you limit choice the price goes up. Meaning that over the 10-15 year lifespan of the system, the client will pay more and sometimes twice what they would have paid on a open system, as well as the fact that with limited choice you will inevitably come across poor service levels, as there is less competition. - Paul

@@wirefreeprotection That’s true, you do need to sign up to the partner portal in order to get software and the likes, however, even I as an enthusiast was able to do so, but I don’t think a lot of companies will work on Protec simply due to how virtually everything you needed to do on a system used to be, and still is on older systems locked out with a dongle, I think that bruised them a bit. I’m a massive fan of Apollo and it’s nice how you can use panels from many different vendors, Protec isn’t there yet.

What’s your opinion on Gent Vigilon/ SQuad?
@wirefreeprotection
@wirefreeprotection 6 ай бұрын
Hi Adil, the Gent Vigilon/SQUAD is well thought of, flexible and reliable combination of control panel and detection. The origins of the Vigilon date back to the Gent 3400 and 34000 which is about 30+ years old, and although the protocol hasn’t essentially changed a great deal, it has evolved, which in my opinion is a good thing. The cost of ownership is higher than open protocol systems such as Apollo or Hochiki. I estimate that the user would pay 20% more throughout its [a fire alarm system] typical lifetime, which is mainly down to the restricted market model that Gent systems are brought to market.

@@adilhossain8198 We don’t have any experience with that product, therefore can’t assist you with an opinion. I would advise contacting Bosch directly a nd I’m sure they’ll be able to assist you.
