‎ Breeding fish is a great passion of ours, so here are some of our favorite projects that you can do at home with a 20-gallon aquarium (both high or long tanks). These are longer term setups in which the colony won't get overcrowded very quickly or the fish won't get too big, forcing you to upgrade the aquarium.

I breed neolamprologus similis in a 20L. I LOVE the species. They're my favorite of all the shell dwellers for some random reason *AND* rare enough that you can actually SELL to pet stores instead of store credit. I'm the only producer that I know of in my entire city and I have fish stores calling me asking for them. :)

what would you consider the Fluval87L Curve to be, hybrid of both or long?
@lesliejohnson2982
@lesliejohnson2982 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahx4699 For breeding purposes, it would do either well, based on the dimensions. I would honestly, if I were breeding ground dwelling fish, go with a regular 20L - similar dimensions for floor space but not as much depth to reach down into for maintenance. But for anything that lives top to mid water column, its a 20L basically. It is sort of a hybrid.

@@AquariumCoop off topic I have cpds breeding but half the fry have swim bladder issues. Just wondering if this is a genetic thing or what? (The closest fish vet(Canada) is two hours away) the first spawn I tried raising was a colder temperature, the fish got about 3/4 of an inch before they started showing symptoms (swim bladder and bent spines). Second spawn Warmer fry tank. Bent spines and swim bladder issues between 1/4” and 3/8” long. Scoured the internet not finding useful info on swim bladder in fish fry.

Im right there with you. 6 tanks and growing, loving it. Started with yellow tiger endlers, pineapple swordtails, blue dream and yellow golden back shrimp. Got some good colonies going. My next project will be German blue rams, killifish and kribs. So many possibilities it’s hard to get bored. Plus I also like to combine hobbies. I use water changes and filter clean outs for plants in the garden. They really explode when it comes to fish poop. I also have built a lot of my tank stands so I can incorporate carpentry as well. Hope to have many more years in the hobby and maybe just go full time one day.

Lately I’ve been finding that my tanks with spawning going on are my favorites and my “display” tanks don’t excite me as much anymore. Seeing the different processes for each fish and the challenge having to raise little tiny babies is the exciting part to me. My current project is Ricefish which is perfect timing to try dean’s spawning method over a spawning mop! Hoping to see good results! 😊

If you're interested in breeding behaviors in fish you're spawning, I can't recommend shelldwellers (neolamprologus similis in particular) enough. They're SUPER easy to breed, if given 7.5-8pH hard water and sand and shells. I started with 8 about 18 months ago and they have paid for themselves 4x over in baby sales (far from dime a dozen mollies/guppies) they're rare enough that you can make $5-$10 PER FISH from LFS, more if you take store credit sometimes). But $$ aside, their behaviors/staking out territory/excavating their shells/building homes and then protecting their shells and babies is absolutely fascinating, and at times, hilarious. I had 2 males who established territories side by side, their shells facing each other. One day one of the males decides to do some house cleaning... so he scooped up a mouthful of sand, and spit it.... Directly into the shell of his rival and neighbor. Neighbor, not to be outdone, gets his own mouthful, and proceeds to spit it into the 1st male's shell. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. I sat there for 45 minutes watching them spit practically the same mouthful of sand at each other, and giggled.

@@lesliejohnson2982 🤣🤣🤣 that’s definitely on my bucket list! I already have the shells for them! A buddy of mine has a tank of them and they’re definitely pretty fascinating! What size tank do you have set up for them??

@@Idkseemskindafishy 2 20L right now, probably will keep more for a larger breeding colony later, I want to buy a frag tank (wide but shallow) eventually for them. More floorspace is better for them. *IF* you can get your friend to give you sexed adults, you'll be better off than just buying juveniles and hoping. I got 8 and asked for what the guy at the cichlids website considered a good chance of 6 females/2 males. I got 5/3 which is close enough. Given the right parameters, they breed. A LOT. So be prepared. 20L will house 8 for a year, or 6 for a bit longer because of breeding. :)

I have a male and a female in a 20 tall. Their behaviour suggests some funny business is happening. Not the end of the world if you don't have plants. 2 months ago, I've purchased 1 male and 1 female blue moscow. I bought only a pair, because they were the last 2 blue guppy the seller had. The male since die, I suspected that it was near the end of its life, because the veil was prety big, but the female survive and now I have about 100 or more fry spread about 4 generations, living among the surface vegetation. I overfeed, so aggression towards the fry is non existing. I think I will let the colony grow, and if by any chance the tank will become overcrowded, I can always sell the mature ones back to the seller, especially since he was not able to bring more blue guppy to sell. :)

@@uwu7164 I keep trying to find at least males for the "alpha" female, but in my region there are no other sources of blue moscow :( The original seller, also lost their colony... Calvus do great in 29 gallon tanks. I have a pair of Gold Calvus that breed all the time in one. I put them in and they breed. After they have spawned I move the male to my 75 and leave the female with the babies until they are free swimming. I then take her out and move her back to the 75 with the male. I let the babies grow until they are half an inch then I move the babies to a 75 gallon set up for them to grow out in. Key to breeding Calvus I have found is getting the right size shells and plenty of water changes. It is funny how small a shell a female can lay her eggs in. I love all Calvus and Tanganyikan cichlids.

I have 150+ guppy/endler crosses in a 20 gallon, heavily planted. My filter gave out one day, and it had no effect on the tank; didn't lose a single fish. It's looking pretty rough because algae is growing, but I am reluctant to touch it, it has been thriving like this for months. Don't try this at home! I got lucky.

I asked KGTropicals this also to get different opinions. Would you say aquariums as a hobby is growing enough to make it worth trying to breed and sell in the near future?

I have a 20H with mutt guppies. I used aragonite for my substrate to keep the hardness high. It's there a single fish I can add to the tank to keep my population from getting crazy? Right now I will pull a few babies out to feed to my angels.

Hi Nathan, no way to prepay for a year, but I believe in most states it just auto renews. There are a few states that don't allow subscriptions I guess.

@@AquariumCoop boo to not being able to pre pay. Lol. Well I'll make sure to keep an eye on it then. Also want to give the shipping team for the co-op a HUGE thank you. I placed an order at like 5 am 2 days ago and I already received the package. What makes it crazier is I live in southwest Florida.. Aquarium co-op rocks.. 🐠🌱🐟
