Some ebikes are expensive and others target value but all can be customized to offer a more comfortable, useful experience. Here are the top five electric bike accessories according to Sam Townsend from Myron’s Extreme Machines in Fullerton California. Sam has been in the ebike business for over a decade and carries a wide range of products. He has observed trends and come up with a general list of the top 5 most popular extras.
- The saddle (the bike seat), pedals, handlebars and grips are very popular upgrades. These are the parts of the ebike that people interface with directly and can be dialed in for comfort, light weight or some combination of the two.
- A bell, horn or electronic beep can improve safety by alerting other riders of your presence but choose something friendly and not so loud that it will startle people or hurt your own ears when used repeatedly
- To carry extra gear (say, for commuting) and improve the utility of an e-bike many owners will add a rear carry rack. These are usually compatible with trunk bags and panniers or even bottle cages. Consider beam racks, under-seat bags, frame bags (that use straps or velcro to secure to the frame structure) and front racks if you need even more space or have a full suspension bike that isn’t compatible with rear racks. Many times you can bring along a charger or extra battery to extend your range.
- For extended use (be it commuting or cross-country riding) you may need a tool kit for moments when parts on the bike come loose or fail. Flat tires, loose spokes and dropped chains are common when going off-road and having the proper tools can keep you going. Consider taking your cell phone along so you can call for help if needed.
- To secure your bike bring a lock and consider adding a seat leash and longer cable so that wheels won’t be removed. There are a wide range of options here and the trade off seems to be in weight and price. Some link-locks now fold to become super compact. You can also buy bicycle insurance which not only covers the bike but also accessories and injuries (much like car insurance).
- For even more visibility, consider adding a set of lights. This is especially important if you ride at night. As seasons change the morning commute or evening rides may get dark and catch you off guard. In some places it is illegal to ride at night without lights. Many lights are now USB powered or rechargeable and some ebikes have USB outlets so you can charge your lights as you ride.
- Consider upgrading your tires to avoid flats or improve efficiency. There are other products out there such as Slime or tire liners that can reduce or help to deal with flats but tires can make a big difference. Topeak also makes a crate for that same rack. All their accessories can use the same rack. The crate is fantastic. I pack my groceries into it and ride home. It’s better for rainy climates too as it’s all plastic and no cloth. I could see using that bag he demonstrated if I was in a dry climate but I’m in the Pacific NW and we ride in the rain six months out of the year.

One of the best locks to get is the New York U style locks. The Chain one with the small U lock is good against cut off wheels. People should really look at the Lock Picking Lawyer on youtube as he goes into this stuff.

I had one of them I locks before years ago when I had a Cyclamatic Power plus e-bike, fantastic lock, but was damn heavy, I bet now you can get them much lighter, can't remember the brand of the lock (was 6 years ago) but there wasn't any bike thieves here in the UK getting through that lock, it was indestructible for sure. But you're correct, they are the absolute best locks in my opinion.

I can't believe that any male that rides bikes wouldn't know what that channel down the center of the saddle if for. Without it, blood flow to certain parts gets crushed, and things can go numb. Long term damage can actually result. I went through six saddles before I found a comfortable one. Do what you have to, to find a comfortable saddle. And I have a similar Topeak rack and bag. My rack clamps to the seat post. It's all very well made, and worth every penny.

I like this guy, wish his shop was closer! The closest shops to me are a big cold chain store, and a traditional bike shop that is not real good with mechanical skills (didn't know how to check if a wheel was dished). My first accessory was a helmet of course, followed by a rear rack, bottle holder, a cool mini-Thermos that fit the bottle holder, a two-stage hand pump, a U-lock with extension cable, a 10 mm cable lock from Master for quick stops, a rear bag, a phone holder, and a suspension seat post. I also ordered a Nitecore headlight, but have to figure out how to mount it since there is no room on the handlebars. I might just replace the stock headlight, which I like, but the beam pattern is too small.

I found something called a Seatylock. It's the foldy lock attached to a saddle. There's 2 variations: Trekkin' and Comfort. I wouldn't recommend it by itself, but then I never use just one lock. I have one for the front tire and the frame and one for the back tire and frame. And I use the Foldyllock Heavy Duty for the front and the Seatylock for the back. Yeah, it adds a couple of hundred to the price, but with a bike of $1000 or more, that sounds like a good deal to protect your investment. To me anyway.

Gardener Rob Yeah! It's a clever design... just roll out the panniers when you need more space, otherwise they stow and keep luggage sleek and secure. I think it's called the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag amzn.to/1gYRbD3 and they have that special rack and even some rain covers for it. I'd enjoy another road tour once the e-bike arrives at my doorstep. I've made two such adventures 1500 and 175 miles years ago on a regular bike. The only way now is with power assist. From the moment I entertained another adventure, however long, the idea of more than one battery was a no brainer.

Been binge-watching videos about ebikes since hearing about the RadRover a few days ago. There seems to be much less of this sort of thing here on the East coast - not even a regular cycle shop closer than 10 miles from my home... One thing I am surprised about, is that nobody seems to put a mirror on their bike! Even at 20mph, you are going to be passed much more than you are going to be passing... I used to cycle a lot, back in my younger days, and a decent mirror was always one of the first things I added.

Best road bike saddle I ever had was a Unicanitor, Italian brand made in Mexico. Suede over plastic. The original saddle on my Super Mondia (Swiss, no longer made) was a really cheap hard plastic saddle that was very round on top. Upper level manufacturers figure that the buyer is going to put his choice of saddle on, so they put the cheapest 50¢ saddle that they can get. The Super Mondia was $600 in 1975, which is around $2,800-$3,000 today.

The cut out in the seats are for blood flow. Think of blood veins as a drinking straw. Pinching the straw in the middle restricts flow and letting go restores flow. However after many rides on a seat without a cut out. Those veins start the lose their ability to open/unpinch all the way. So you end up with a partially compressed vein that restricts blood flow. So these seats are especially important for the long term health of men. For both prostate health and the ability to have a healthy erection. Ask your doctor about it.

Still sporting that Big asS (original Schwinn) seat and lovin' the feel. Locks and covers are another story. Insurance on purchase price? That would be pennies on the dollar of the value. I was looking for a way to secure my bike saddle. I decided to put a band clamp around the quick release and gluing a BB into the hex port. Now, the thief would need a knife to dig out the BB and a hex tool or a flat head screw driver to undo the band clamp so as to get to the quick release. It turns a 2 second job into a 3 minute job. No so inviting now I think.

Nice guy, l would buy a bike from him. do you have advise on sprung seat posts?
@algrayson8965
@algrayson8965 4 жыл бұрын
A spring seat post should have almost no travel; just a little bit, like ¼”, takes the edge off of bumps. More travel and you lose a lot of pedaling efficiency. The starting saddle height is 109% of the inseam from standing in your cycling shoes on a flat floor to the sit-bone in your crotch. Not your pants inseam. With a pedal all the way down in line with the seat tube to the top of the saddle in line with the seat post is where the 109% is measured. The top of the saddle should be level, parallel to the floor. This is a starting point. The saddle can be moved back or forward in tiny increments, as its tilt. The seat height is adjusted up or down in no more than ⅛” increments. It's trial and error. The most common crank arm length center-to-center is 170mm / 6.7” for adult bikes. The idea is that the ball of your foot is directly over the pedal spindle and the center of your ankle joint passes next to the crank axle center line. Crank length can be adjusted only by replacing crank arms which can get expensive as low end cranksets don't offer any choice; choice of crank arm length is available only in high end (expen$ive) cranks.

Is there an E-bike on the market that can charge the battery while coasting downhill? Something like the old Honda Insight car that worked that way. Any add-on gadget like the ancient generator / light arrangement that worked off tire rotation?

Why would you have a quick release on a seat post ?? I get wheels in case of puncture etc, but a seat post, once its set to a height it generally stays there....

Hey Court. Would like to see same type of gadget reviews on "Challenging weather conditions & changing technical terrains" for long haul Mtn bikers. Learning new developments in this area would be cool. Do you multi day ride & camp?

vibe2light Great feedback! I've done some traditional tent camping, hiking into the woods with friends etc. and I'm planning to attend Burning Man in a week or so with ebikes and scooters! As far as touring, dealing with rain, wind etc. I'll keep your suggestion in mind and try to incorporate it or do a trekking review someday.

Good video. Thanks. The slot in the saddle is as big a change in bikes as putting an electric motor on 'em! Originally done for the sake of the ladies and their differently shaped pelvis (child bearing and all that) turns out the same kinda slot was of great assistance to men, too. The saddle may not feel too comfortable initially, but you can ride ALL day without it hurting at the end. Saves you getting sore and saves you getting a numb bum, too. Most importantly, it saves pressure on the prostate.. (and you can use Wikipedia to find out why it is nice to have one of those in good shape.) Slot in the saddle = big advance, oh yes indeedy!

The cut out greatly reduces pressure on the tailbone The cut out style is seen on many wheelchair cushions for reducing pressure ulcers (bed sores)

I wear padded underwear on long rides to be even more comfortable. Cheaper than buying a seat post suspension and, with a good plush seat, makes for a comparable ride.

I just bought a DJ bike from Canada that seems like an awesome bike got all the whistles and bells best quality parts so I'm happy you got to get an electric bike especially if you're a senior And I've seen Sam he seems like a really cool guy this guy that does the interviews and checks out the bikes I'd say he's got it going on too I learned a lot from that guy thanks yours truly
