The one beneath my greenhouse ;) Most of the systems in the vids dont perform as well as expected, especially for cooling, due to layout and overall design. If a system isnt efficient for cooling, it wont be efficient at storing heat because the same process is used for both. The other thing that isnt mentioned in vids or commercial advertising is the amount of moisture thats returned to the greenhouse along with the heat. Folks assume the heat returned is 100% sensible, like an electric heater, when, in reality, the bulk is in latent form (water vapour). If you have a system installed, its easily confirmed by tracking the greenhouse RH% when the system is heating.

Glad you gave Gus top spot! I bought his greenhouse in January, and am in the finishing stages of putting it together myself (working on the retaining wall this weekend). The only real negative I can say is that the plans/directions are lacking pretty badly. You better have some construction know how to put it together. But, it's a great greenhouse, and I can't wait to be finished and begin setting up my aquaponics as well as planting my orange trees!

This was great - thank you. My husband and I wanted to create a climate battery greenhouse. I had not yet gotten to the point of figuring out exactly what or how. He died three months ago, and now I'm not sure whether to continue with this idea or not. He would have been my builder. So, now I'm back to figuring out what is even possible for me on my own, both cost and skills-wise. Thank you for this overview of several fairly affordable ones and good channels to continue researching.

And best of all seeing there face and them realising that they actaully ment they couldn't of done it. Sorry for your lose. There is other thermal battery options for greenhouses that are easier to start with like water storage and solar heating the water or wood fires with a stone made thermal battery wish you the best

Hi Jacqui, If I were in your position, I would first browse KZfaq for related knowledge and take notes so that a good, comprehensive understanding is established. Next I would start with a proportioned tiny project as if it is an on-hand experience gatherer: such as I cannot hand dig to 12 feet I would instead dig down to 7 feet and insulate 4 sides and top with doubled 2 inch blue rigid insulation probably assisted by bubble wrap sheet. There is great free information online that can help and guide me. Do not borrow to finance your project since at the start it is hard to break even. Another important point is: digging down beyond 4.5 feet you need shoring to prevent soil/wall collapse that sometimes is lethal.

I agree with your pet peeve at the end. We are a small farm and sell meat and produce to local customers. Some farmers refuse to sell to some customers due to religious preferences on how the meat is prepared. I’ve allowed those customers to practice their rituals and found them enlightening and respectful to the livestock. No one objects to how we harvest produce, but we do get criticized for doing livestock and produce.

Thank you for sharing all this information with links so we can research and see what works best for where we live and the size of lot or acreage we have. I live in Canada where winters are very cold in some parts. I live in an area where average lows are (in F): Nov: 18; Dec: 3.2; Jan: -5; Feb: 23 and Mar 32. Frost line is 4 - 5 ft - and as much as 8 ft in bitterly cold winters, deep enough to burst city water lines (2014 major damage). Curtis Stone is lucky to live in Kelowna where winters are much milder (Nov - Mar avg between 21 F - 36 F) therefore more shallow frost line. Here we would have to dig at least 6 ft for an underground heat storage system. And how can anyone hit the dislike rating on this or any of your other videos???!!!!
@SimpleTek
@SimpleTek 4 жыл бұрын
considering I live an hour north of Winnipeg I understand cold winters. The key to a climate battery in our climate is insulation. Later I'll be doing videos on this - the best materials I've found are if you can get styrofoam from buildings being destroyed or making your own air Crete. if you have 6-10inches of insulation around your climate battery the cold weather and frost isn't a big deal.

@@tineschrijvers3174 I've finished my career with City and now I'm preparing to start green housing near satellite cities of Greater Toronto. I hope to compost inside the poly-carbonate greenhouse, burn dried wood and shrub to generate heat, possibly make a waste engine oil burner. To enhance heat retention, I plan to cover the top and outside of the poly-carbonate sheeting (with bubble wrap) during severe cold times and roll the bubble wrap away when sunny. Inside I'll add a high tunnel of bubble wrap over the beds so that there are 3 layers of insulation. Biogas is my target too although my scale will be tiny.

I've talked with Russ on the phone about 5 yrs ago. Great guy. He is a tinkerer like us. I live in Kansas City area and thought I could just drive up to visit but he is almost to Wyoming ha ha. My ground temp here in 56-7F/13.3C about 8 feet down so I bought the CD but still haven't moved to the country yet. The biggest problem I have witnessed on KZfaq on variations of these are when when people move away from Russ's I never see a follow up videos from them. I don't know why this is. I know from my conversations with Russ he has tried virtually *everything* and if something worked better, he would have gone in that direction. A big issue is when you place a lot of turns in your underground tubing. That slows down the air considerably. I think he said he only had 2 or 3 in his entire system. I think what is missing are actual temperature and windspeed sensors down in the ground to see exactly what happens in many-bend systems. Also, intrigued from your underground a/c video, I was wondering, are there larger dia. smooth tubes that you used for your a/c idea for this application and heat? Re: LDS prepper-yes styrofoam only type of solid insulation recommended for greenhouses from my research. It is such a humid environment I liken it more to a marine environment. Everything will rust or get soggy eventually. Also, before I forget, there is a product out of Colorado that you put on in the inside of your north wall that absorbs heat in the day and releases it at night. I forget what it is called.

I turn my chicken coop into a greenhouse of a sort. The southern whole wall was now greenhouse plastic. I didn't do the whole thing because I live in Texas and it gets hot even in the winter. It was like 30° outside and 120 inside before I got my exhaust fan working. Actually didn't fry any of my plants which was shocking. These are all great earth batteries with large budgets. For those of us with more modest size normal greenhouses, I have a solution. Yes insulate that north wall. Also as sand batteries have become news worth over the last few months, it's the same idea so I dug a hole in my greenhouse 4 feet square and 10 feet deep. Insulated it then filled it with sand and air tubes and covered it. with the same idea as the fancy ones, a fan takes hot air from top of greenhouse where it's hottest and pumps it into the sand to charge it, then when the temps drop at night it works the opposite way. I built mine for around 350 dollars and most of that was on the sand and insulation. It works great.

Howdy! I've been tinkering with the idea of having a modified sterling engine (using neod mags. and liquid oxygen/nitrogen, plus the added feature of a liquid battery for its heat generation/power storage). If the vehicles we use are made to function on specific *rails (multiple lanes, which can be automated and/or custom controlled - at specific points). The rails would act with both liquid oxy/nitro and neodymium, one of the means of propulsion. Air pressure - collection from the nose tip. To then be utilized with fans and other volatile chemists that react to other factors. - Floor battery: sterling engine, transportation of liq oxy/nitr - which transfers the additional cooler temp [can have rotational statuses of sending heat or cold - for seasonal changes of different locations/area/zone. - Liq oxy/nitr - utilized for any aspect of bringing more bliss to stay others want to do (craft, service, farming, education that works/the 'pure child-like excitement' of something new and that draws you to want to do more... lol) - Maintenance dues: via donations/volunteers and/or very low cost to everyone that uses this service. - Also having a test area for - Algae farming for biofuel potential... (which we would need a bunch of people to man the ship... lol). And stretch that out for everyone and companies to be able to generate their own biofuel and other products and/or have a 'collector'. - I wonder if the liquid battery - the heat generated - be able to smelt... be it from super- capacitors used as arcs... lol, or some other same way... (both, energy discharging and surface temp - if plug and play avail). - If so, then, placing the smelting mechanisms to the rail system, would generate means of faster output for transforming unused materials and heat transfer - sterling engine. - Which should be able to alternate the temps going either direction. Okay I'll stop here... lol, soo many thoughts and ideas... lol, Cheers!! To a more Utopic society for all! Equally~

First of all, thank you for the work you are doing. I am planning on building this coming spring just south of Minneapolis. I will already down 4' with my bobcat to dig the hole, so I'm planning on taking a post hole auger and angering another 4' down at the base. Then, I will run those tubes (not looped) into my bottom header that's located at 4'. So I would be pulling from 8' below ground in the winter. Do you see an issue with doing that?

My parents are from the Netherlands. Farmers used to build their homes and barns attached to each other. The residual heat would transfer to the house (along with some of the smell ) and if something weird was going on you could hear it. It's the way life was . Could a green house not make use of that? Build a barn on north side have green house built walapini style? Each laying hen for instance produces 10 watts in heat energy. In Canada government allows 2.7 birds per square foot in battery cages. 27 watts 24/7 . Solar panels provide 15 watts at best for a few hours at peak time of day?

JohnGuest45 My theory: 1. If we dig 12 ft down. Place Blue plastic barrels in the hole. 2. We have a well and irrigation pond on the farm. Split off from the well and connect it to my buried drums. The last barrel has a pipe running out and back to the pond. 3. I will run the geothermal pipes through the barrels. Keeping them water tight. Everything else would be the same as as the geothermal community, except we have sand and dirt and not rock. So tell me am I imagining success where there is none. Yes we also use the water wall(swamp cooler) for cooling but like I said Kuwait is really hot. Using geothermal would be additional cooling with lower use of electricity and cost.
@JohnGuest45
@JohnGuest45 3 жыл бұрын
@@RickWright722 Hi Rick, Its easy to imagine success but its better to run the numbers and compare the predicted performance to the existing swamp cooler performance which is a known quantity. If the geothermal can provide equal cooling performance with lower running costs that could be viewed as success. The more variables you can put numbers to the better. Burying plastic barrels 12ft deep is ok but its doesnt provide much to work with, for example, how many barrels and how big they are will give you the surface area and how much water. The first thing i would do is physically measure the temperature of the sand down at 12ft as the viability of the installation rests on it. It wont be the 55F stated by most of the geothermal vids on youtube ;) The easiest way to get the temprature reading is to attach a hose to a length of pvc pipe or several short lengths that can be fixed together as you go. Turn on the water and the pipe will sink into the ground with almost no effort. Give it a few days for the temperature to stabilise and then drop a temperature sensor down the tube. Its best to take readings regularly several times a day over a period of time to get a better picture, i sank a number of tubes at various depths around the site and monitored the temperaures for 12 months to get a baseline.

Any idea where to find a two stage thermostat that works for a climate battery fan? @@SimpleTek researched all day, including those sources thank you - the solution I went with is a second fan (8" squirrel cage high cfm). very hard to find any other solution, and I came across a few others asking this same question. If you build an in ground climate battery in your greenhouse and want to turn the fan on to charge it, then take a break when it's nice out, then on again to use the heat at night - there are thermostats that kind of do this but they're meant to run a separate heater and a/c. A simple thermostat that will do the switching but power just one fan needs to be put on the market, if they exist I can't find one.

@@OakSummitNursery The best solution is a combination of thermostat, differential thermostat and fan speed controller. A "dumb" thermostat will run the fan regardless of whether the mass can accept or supply heat because it only takes account of the greenhouse air temperature. It should also take account of the temperature of the mass.

Very nicely done and a good idea to review these climate battery experts. Thanks. Next concern: The underground drain piping used will build up condensate water and my thoughts are that that could smell or be unhealthy. One certainly needs to know for a fact the water table level before building and digging. Also, what about radon and testing? Question for YOU! What video software do you use, and do you use a green screen to make those really nice background images? There actually is another granddad of thermal battery greenhouses, and it is a private Christian school up in Polebridge, Montana. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ob1pe7agu7zNZnk.html It is at an elevation of 3600 feet and 15 miles from Canada.

From what I understand, using the perforated black drain pipe allows condensation to drain into the soil and allows benign soil organism to dominate and control any mold and mildew. Radon? I think a radon detector should be used, but I'm not sure if most green house are tight enough to matter.

Thank you for your comment. I really do appreciate the input. You do realize the term 'hoe' as defined by dictionary.com means " noun 1.a long-handled implement having a thin, flat blade usually set transversely, used to break up the surface of the ground, destroy weeds, etc. 2. any of various implements of similar form, as for mixing plaster or mortar. " and in the construction industry a "hoe" is the short form for the machine called a "back-hoe" - which is an interchangeable word for an 'excavator'. Please feel free to look those terms up. I do try to refrain from urban slang as urban slang terms often have different meanings in different areas to different people. ;) Hoes do need to be paid for their work whenever they do work.. I hope you didn't infer I meant anything different than that. I only tried to make a funny that if you can use a different tool to do the same job you don't need to pay for a hoe, not that hoe's don't deserve to be paid for their work when they do work. Than you for watching and bringing that to my attention! I do hope you have a great day and continue watching!
