I've been told that the more you know the less you think you know. I guess that means you know enough to know there is so much more. It is the ones who think they know it all that actually know very little. So it sounds to me like you are probably doing pretty good. That's without hearing you play but it is an indication.

Another element worth considering is whether you can sustain clean playing (of whatever level of complexity) and solid rhythm with others and most especially when performing live. There are lots of fairly simplistic guitarists who can stay solid with a band or even solo through a set and lots of others who can play more complex stuff in their bedroom but can’t keep it together in live performance.

Hi Andy - this is fantastic. I've recently been focusing on expanding my practising - and tried these - which to my surprise I didn't find too difficult. I will of course hone for sure - but at this moment - it has given me a snapshot and a better understanding of where I am and importantly where I should be heading. Many many thanks.

Great video. Ironically I am currently learning three of the five songs as part of an Acoustic Duo gig that I have started recently. I haven’t learnt Hallelujah yet, but I am glad I saw your video first for the capo trick. I hadn’t considered that he had used one for this song, but after hearing you play with it on, it makes so much sense. I am going to learn the other two songs just for the fun of it. I would rate myself as an intermediate player heading towards professional. Thanks for the great video again. 😃🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

I like the differentiation between being able to “play” a song and ACTUALLY play it properly. For example, I had a friend in high school who was a beginner, and came to show off when he learned the chords of “Save Tonight”, but when I listened to him play it it was just basic strumming of the four chords with some pretty sus tempo changes. We gave him credit but of course you spot exactly what’s missing. Being an intermediate rhythm guitarist (even tho it isn’t stated, this video is specifically about rhythm guitar) means you hear the nuanced patterns/muting/hammer-ons etc and can replicate them. Being advanced means you can just play much harder stuff accurately and in time. You’ve started slowly and gotten faster, and now there is no slowing of tempo during hard parts and minimal mistakes. But then also there are many types of advanced guitarists. Dave Gilmour can bend 1, 1/2, 2, 2 1/2 steps to perfection from any fret, incredible phrasing and tone, yet for the beginner-intermediate level fingerstyle on “Is there anybody out there?” they brought in another guitarist to play it. James Taylor can play complex fingerstyle patterns ten different ways subconsciously, but give him a Les Paul, crank the distortion, and ask for a screaming solo, and you may not see the same level of mastery.

@@chucklutter2509 It starts out in D minor (which is F major). The riff follows D minor pentatonic when they play it down the next. The chorus is in D minor. The verses in C sharp minor (Key of E). That should make it easier to follow.
@GaryBook
@GaryBook Жыл бұрын
@@chucklutter2509 Break it down into two parts, the opening in D minor where you do the riff by the neck, then walk up and down on the chords. Then you riff again in the 10 fret on high strings using D minor pentatonic scale. Second part: Then you switch to the verse in C# minor (which is key of E). The thing that makes it challenging is there are many parts and chords. Just break it down into small parts and understand the music theory for D minor & D minor pentatonic and C# minor. Then you practice and blow away your friends!!!

I am a beginner and may always be stuck in beginner mode. I know lots of chords and can do quick chord changes, lift-offs and hammer-ons, various strum patterns including muting (love to mute), but finger picking remains a challenge. I seem to be clumsy or just lack patience. It’s like boating….power boats versus sailing. Power boat people love the thrill of speed and reaching a destination quickly. Sailing people love the thinking element, the art of controlling direction with subtle adjustments of the sails with the ever changing wind. Far more patient. Hence, I am a power boater.

With finger picking, one thing that helps is try to put the finger on the string that finger will be playing and keep them there close so there will be minimal movement. Finger picking was hard at first but I actually picked it up fairly quickly. It's really not as hard as it seems at first and once u get it, it's really fun to play finger style. Hybrid picking is really fun too. Fade to black is a good song to dip ur toe into the hybrid picking pool as it's not too fast.

Started out with a heavy dose of Metallica to get my feet wet then started playing more complex stuff like Megadeath, Death, EVH etc.
