Omg yes same. I live in Northeastern MA, and it’s April so maybe it’s a bit late but I’ve been trying to search for whatever I can find. I’m just not so sure where to look as it’s pretty urban up here. Even in the rural areas, I’m not so sure where to find deer or where food sources might be. I don’t hunt, though I’d like to. I just don’t know anyone else into this sort of thing so I don’t know where to ask around. Got any pointers? I’m a big hiker anyway so I’m willing to travel a bit if I have to. I spend lots of time just walking in the woods up in southern NH.

Good luck! Some of the biggest mistakes are going to early, especially on small parcels. And then wasting a lot of time in low % areas. On public land or large parcels you can hit the spots early because you are just pushing the deer around on the same lands you can shed hunt later. BUT, on small parcels you just can't afford to spook them off. "Small" meaning anything under 500 acres...good luck!

Really appreciate your feedback Bob! Very cool. Always seems like late February is when we really get to peak around here...although there will still be a decent holding into March. I had several clients with complete sets still holding early April last year. The latest full set I saw on the lands I hunt was 3/29 last year

@@ellismidkiff6117 you may want to wait a while depending on where you are at. Most areas...Midwest ag, a large majority are still holding. Just got word this morning from a client in southern MI...9 bucks seen yesterday in a bachelor group, all still holding both antlers including a Giant. And Giant in that area is 150-160+.

The silence if snow can be therapeutic for sure Randle...but I wouldn't hunt for sheds i Right now in this snow either

Great points! So many rush the woods too quickly for sheds. Seems earlier every year. Which doesn't matter as much on private land or giant parcels where you can afford to push the deer around more...unless it stresses them out too much! But not sure good practice on small private parcels...even 0-500 acres. Deer run at least a 1/4 Mike when spooked and mid Winter with less cover...a 1/2 mile spook is common. That takes deer off of nearly every parcel under 500 acres, let alone the more common sizes of 40 and 80 acres. Great points!

That makes sense. The bucks that I've been seeing, that are still holding both antlers, are mostly 2 1/5 year olds and younger. The does must be in another estrus cycle right now. I've also noticed a lot of deer dead beside the roads which I usually see during a rutting period.

Thanks a lot GK and you are very welcome! Me too on the always trying to be a better hunter. Very cool to make sense of those different type of parcels too. I find bucks do change seasonal patterns and with a mature buck in particular, they just can't stand "change"...either drastic habitat and most importantly people pressure. New hunters in an area, major timber harvest, major food source changes...they can shift a buck back to a particular, highly defined pattern. Those old gyys are VERY set in their ways. Lol...kind of like me 🙂

I’ve noticed for one instance the the deer will enter a property on the south/SE side by way of a hollow for let’s say 2-3 years... Then during the next year during that same part of the season they would enter the property on the West/NW.. then the following year revert back to the previous years.. making me pull what little hair I have left out.. Lol..

@@g.k.dalton4530 there are reasons for sure! I find the older a buck becomes, the more he relies on a very select # of daytime bedding areas...only 2 or 3. The answer could be as simple as that he is bumped from his preferred for some reason. When he is bumped, he can relocated for the entire season. He is that stubborn, but at the same time those very few locations have kept him alive. And he knows that...I believe he feels that level of security.

Partly because I spend 10 days a month scouting client lands...another 3-4 days on my own lands shooting videos. So not time. Partly because a lot of Great Fall parcels do not capture s lot of sheds. Partly not wanting to spook what deer are there trying to survive the winter...off, while adding the stress relocation. Also I find out if the deer are alive through Summer scouting and late season/winter trail cam pics. Lots of reasons I don't worry about shed hunting my own lands though. Great points that you bring up too!

The cool thing is that if the food stays consistent, shed timing isn't effected by much else...outside of health if the buck. I agree though that the weather plays a role too! Something I always go back to with she'd timing are deer inside vs outside of enclosures in extreme northern regions. Inside the fence March timing, outside the fence late December/early January shed timing. Same 235" snowfall zone...same habitat (even worse inside enclosure). Major difference though - deer inside the fence are pellet fed. Quality of the soil, habitat and ultimately the quality of the food source goes a long ways. That's why shed drop for example is January on southern Ohio, public land...late in the surrounding ag areas with same exact weather. Pretty cool and defined pattern...

@@Dougarrowhead oh for sure...but man the list of factors that first effect the hormone change. In your buddies case the shot is the influencer. In the wild...social stress, length of breeding, physical stress, quality of habitat, high quality food source availability, weather stressors, severity of weather, etc...that all effect hormone levels. A shot speeds all of that up, greatly! Pretty cool though

It depends on how crusted the snow is. Powder...yes. BUT, I would wait until right at the end of snow melt, which is a GREAT time to shed hunt!

Tony Schroeder should be a good spot then, in my opinion it’s worthless to shed hunt when there is more than 6” or so of consistent snow. It’s a lot harder to see them and if you kind of work different areas at different times chances are you will think there’s nothing there but if you would come back when snow is gone there might be some

Never any 100%...but there sure are some very good odds 😉 we still have most holding both around here. I know other areas that none are holding. Pretty consistent from year to year for a given area.

I would say more are holding still in most areas, than not. We see quite a few into late March every year, and early April. Just depends on where you are...largely base on a combo of winter severity and quality food. At least how the trends go...

Kind of a balancing act...shed hunt s specific area too much and you drive the deer off even a couple hundred acre parcel. Of course then not shed hunt in time and the antlers are eaten. If it is a very large parcel...1000 acres or more...or on public land, I would go as often as you want to. I would also try and figure out when peak drop is. I see so many folks hunting sheds in areas where nearly all deer are still holding.

Wasn't that crazy!? It was already 17 with 25mph winds...but that last gust was awesome!

I often do...I wear them more and more on my client lands. I have a real nice pair of Vortex binos...fairly small and very comfortable to hang around the neck.

I've found sheds on dozens of lands in more than a dozen states...also checking out where 100s of clients find their sheds, in person. You can find 80% of sheds in 10-20% of the land. I would guess at least 1/3rd are found in and very close to food sources. A large % in bedding areas...a grossly proportionate amount around fence crossings and ditches. Just trying to teach folks to be efficient and smart when searching for sheds based on a huge amount of experience. I find a lot of sheds for clients. It took years to learn but those locations are where I find 80% of them 😉

Whitetail Habitat Solutions that is great, I bet you have a blast doing it! I did not mean that in a negative way. It’s just kind of funny how everyone always says where do you find all the sheds? They can fall off anywhere. One thing is guaranteed, there has to be bucks in the area to find sheds. There has to be a lot of bucks to find a lot of sheds. There’s more to it than finding a cornfield surrounded by bedding area. Late season habitat is where you’ll find the sheds, period.

In those 5 spots... Maybe you will find one some day?

Apparently tons of animals will chew them for calcium, but porcupines especially will devour them!
