Best advice I ever got was if you size up a jump three times and it still feels sketchy, just wait for another day. One day you will be confident and grease it perfectly. It's not worth getting hurt.

Once I was riding a track with my best friend that he had ridden and I had not. I was keeping pace with him as we approached a jump that turned out to be a double. I was totally unprepared but cleared it easily because he knew what he was doing. If you want to make a challenging jump, ride with someone who knows what they’re doing.

#1 tip: use a higher gear until you get a feel for jumping. First time on a track with my CR250R, I was struggling, going nose high, getting kicked sideways. A fellow rider said hit it 4th instead of 3rd. Made world of difference in the smoothness of the jump and landing.

My old man and my buddy told me this the other day except we race quads. After 16 years off a machine I have to learn to jump again cause I have speed everywhere else on the track lol. They saw me nose diving told me pop it into 3rd out of the corner and don't let all the way off the throttle and I instantly started clearing the bigger tables I was landing short on

As for the mistakes I am making, I noticed that when jumping I tend to bend my knees bringing most of my weight back usually happens at the jump face, I guessing it’s just a lack of strength and getting used to, but as soon as I can I’ll correct it, maybe get stronger in the lower body, as for the other common mistakes, I’m try to avoid them as much, like before I actually tried jumping, I was already working on gripping the bike, proper gear selection and keeping a nice steady throttle input, I’ve already worked on those but there can still be improvements. Thank you for the tips and for making this video in general, it is very helpful.

That congratulations at the beginning, I really felt that, thank you so much, here’s a little story, after jumping the very first time successfully back in December of 2023 before last year ended, I was so happy to somehow manage to overcome my fear, I thought it would take me at most 10 years to learn since I started getting into motocross when I was 17 but surprisingly it only took me about 2 years. So thank you, and I am watching this now to correct my mistakes when jumping, although my bike is not really a motocross production bike, it’s just a little 125 dual sport from Yamaha, I believe I can apply some of the tricks mentioned here.

The first time I tried a jump was in 3rd grade, i landed on my front tire, flew off my bike, and broke my collarbone. I’ve only just wanted to start back up on trying jumps last year because my little brother started jumping and I honestly got jealous. I’m in 10th grade now and I’m just realllly struggling with it, my dad says I have perfect form, it’s just my mentality😅 so I’m gonna try these techniques tmrw after school and see if it works for me :)

2:11 ''Rocket Ship'' (if not 'generally' in the neut position, too far back) another interesting result of this undesirable position and attitude of the bike is that when you land rear tire first, the possibility of your handle bars being jerked out of your grip is high. Landing well and safely is a science all by itself, I'm sure they have videos on this as well. Advanced tip for avoiding serious injury if you're about to loop or endo, you're in the air and freaking out; If your front wheel is scary high, you can hit the brake just a millisecond and bring some of the high front bac toward level, and conversely, if you're front of bike is too low and you might endo, you can nearly whiskey throttle for a blip/millisecond, to bring that front back up toward level. Neither of these methods is a guarantee, but they have helped a lot of riders.

If you leave the jump in the right body position and with your body balanced front to rear you'll fly level. I've discovered that if I pay attention to my arms as I leave the jump face it'll let me know what to expect. If you're carrying weight with your arms (think push up) you'll be nose down, if you're pulling on the bars you may loop out. Leave the jump face with all of your weight in your feet and no pressure in your arms.

The rest of the day I was gun shy to hit it again so I avoided the tabletop!

Dang! Don't do that haha. Are you staying level in the air? If your front end is high then you're probably too far back. Something else that some riders do that isn't necessarily and bad thing but will cause you to go higher is pulling up as they leave the jump face. You should be able to carry enough speed/momentum off a jump that you don't need to feel like you should pull up. Did you have someone else tow you in to get the right speed? - Chase

One thing it may just feel like you're higher but sitting down on the take off or dropping a gear or even knees straight or bouncing into the face will do that also, and suspension set-up even

Can u change to third as you jump for the weight not to go to the front?

The taller the gear you're in, the less the bike will want to pitch forward off the jump face if you aren't on the gas as you take off. For those learning, I always tell riders to go one gear higher than they think they need to help prevent an endo. - Chase

Ok uhh dont trottle chop Put your weigh a little to the back of the bike but dont go full trottle on the jump Land back tire first and that will straighten up the landing If its way to much and you almost sideways in mid air Body front im mid air and rev it a bit and it will try to straighten in mid air like a mini whip But be sure to have a either a coach or someone teaching you for that one

Always ask someone if you can pace them over it. Just make sure they know not to blip up the face cause then you won’t know when to or how much blip.
