Hey all! Just thought I would make a quick video explaining some of the most common manual transmissions used in 1jz and 2jz swaps. I go over the specs for each transmission along with pros and cons for each. If anyone has another transmission they think should have been added to the list, please go throw it in the comments!

Nice video, man! You bring it on point. 5 stars for you! I'm destroyed a few of the R154 in my MK3 Supra with 1UZ twin turbo. This engine produce too much torque for the R154. In my opinion, 800Nm (about 590 lbft) is the safe limit for the R154. So for the 2JZ world it's perfect up to 800 horses. I used it on 2J swaps a lot and with the little mods like the billet thrust washer and the heavy duty bearing retainer it's ready for some hard racing. Maybe you can add the Tremec TKX to your list, too. For people who are looking for a 5-speed, it would be a another good option instead of the R154. The price for a new TKX is about the same like for a build R154 but it can handle a lot more power. A few years ago I swaped the T56 Magnum and I love this transmission with the UZ and the 2JZ, too. It's on the expensive side, but don't forget, it's a new transmission with very good part support all over the world. Once you get it in stock trim, you don't have to think about it anymore for 90% of the people's power goals out there. Here in Germany a lot of MK4 Supra guys swapping to the 6-speed BMW transmissions (I think it's out of the 530D). It's known to handle a ton of torque and it's super cheap. I think it's more common instead your BMW 5-speed you mentioned. Maybe you can add this to your list, too.

Yes sir, I have a 530d 6spd gearbox in my 2jz gte is200 as well. At 500hp and 600nm it’s been doing great

Don’t forget to mention that if swapping to an R154 transmission out of the MK3 supra USDM they’ll need a JZA70 bell housing. You can find these at Driftmotion or used online. My r154 handled 622whp for years. Now with a t56 f1000 but I think it’s time for a sequential. 😅

Love the zf 5 speed trans. I have one cut and welded to a volvo m47 bellhousing running it behind my 437whp b230ft volvo engine. I love how well they take high rpm gear banging. I got both of mine from pickpulls for 180 bucks

Good stuff man I'm hoping to drop the t56 from grannas this year in my s30. You got me wondering now about the tunnel fitment. Currently has a r154 and that's tight.

Hey Don really excited to hear you are likely gonna drop in that t56! You won't be disappointed! Don't stress that tunnel fitment all too much, you will likely have to bang out the tunnel but it doesn't take a long time and it's actually kind of fun😂 if I can give any sort of recommendation, it's to bang out the tunnel more than you think you'll need to, and if you can, trim off as much excess metal around the bell housing on the t56 as you can! If you want, I can send you a picture of where I cut excess metal off my t56 to get it to fit! I also have a video where I installed the t56+2jz on my channel but unfortunately didn't give much insight on how much I banged out the tunnel in that video

I use the CD00A with the SERIALNINE bellhousing kit and their shifter kit. Its a massive trans. Its a bit noisy, but it has a very positive and satisfying engagement into gear.

Hey man thank you so much I really appreciate that! And good question! I would say an LSD is a must if you will be putting down anything over 250whp in this type of car. I purchased a OS Giken LSD for my car after doing lots of research on a lot of different companies.

@@TunerFaction Awesome! I'm doing my build a little different than most. Starting with a GE short block with only the crankshaft still in it. (Currently at machiene shop) I'll have to get a GTE head, build a valve train etc. Like everything nuts and bolts, accessories, sensors, I probaby should have bought a whole engine but this way i can spend money on only stuff i need. Goal is 600ish HP

Well done Video just got 1 question wich speedsensor do you need for the R154 that it works in the Supra mk4 with the right speed.

The speed sensor I got for my R154 was called the Marlin Crawler VSS for the R154. This is an attachment that fits onto the stock R154 mechanical speed sensor system and converts it to a voltage. You would also need the Dakota Digital SGI-100BT in order to calibrate the speed sensor to the mk4 Supra. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need links to these products.

I got one for my 2J. Cutting off the bell housing isn’t really that stressful. They give you a little template guide and I just used a sawzall with no issues! I went with Serial9 CD-Pro. It includes the shifter etc

I swaped an aisin ar5 out of a 06 pontiac solstice using swap parts from drift motion. Cost me probably 2500. AR5 holds a lot of power.

I have had a T56M setup on a shelf at my shop for a 2jz mk3 project. Just picked up an NA Mk4 supra With a V161. And my beater 1jz mk3 has a R154. Crazy how expensive all of these transmission are if they happen to break.

You can use the same adapter plate for the GE and GTE! There is dimensionally really no difference between the GTE block and GE block so you will be good!

I have a 2 gen 4runner, and I am thinking of swapping a 2jzge vvti to it , but I'm thinking of keeping it 4x4. Do you know a transmisión that I can pair with ? Originally, my truck has a 3.0 engine pair with a340h transmission, which is a whole transmission and transfer I case , I wonder if I can keep that transmission and pair it with the jz ? Would a R150 from Toyota be compatible or need modification to work?

To my knowledge they do have bell housings to convert the R150 to the 2JZ but it isn't a common combination, and I'm not sure the power a R150 can handle. I also know the R150 came in two variants, one had a longer input shaft and the other had a shorter one. I'm not quite sure which one can be used with the 2JZ. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

@@ZONER1 I'll get that info to you ASAP brother! And for anyone else wondering how much to bang out the tunnel, you really want to take a lot of time banging out the drivers side of the tunnel right near the firewall (around where the gas pedal is). In general though, you want to go back about an inch from the front of the firewall and enlarge that area as much as possible, because the bell housing on the t56 is the part you will have the most clearance issues with.

@@ZONER1 no problem man! To give you an idea of how much I banged out my tunnel, there are some seam welds in the tunnel where you will be banging it out, and I literally split one of the seam welds a little bit because I thinned it out so much. Really go crazy with the hammer man, don't hold back!

CD009 is a shit trans to use for a JZ swap, you’d honestly be better off using a Nissan FS5R30A from a Z32. For the same price as the CD you can get a brand new TT 98+ spec 30A

To each their own. I have plenty of friends that run the CD on their builds and absolutely love them. I do appreciate you throwing in the FS5R30A into the ring, I have actually never heard of it before! Very cool you can get them brand new for the same price as the CD.

I've ran cd009 on my jz swapped 350z for over 3 years and have absolutely no problem with it, I don't daily drive it just drift it. I did upgrade all the syncros 1st - 4th, as I did have grinding going on in 3rd gear. But I also had 220k miles on it before I jz swapped it so the trans was already abused. All transmissions can be shit if you don't really know how to drive.

Wait a minute. Isn't the T56 shifter mechanism like 1 inch closer to the dash than the r154? How yall getting this to work?

Hey boss! Thanks for the comment! So you are correct in that the T56 shifter is in a different location than the r154 shifter, however the Grannas Racing bellhousing for the T56 places the transmission in the perfect position so the shifter comes up right where it needs to in the tranny tunnel into the car in the 240sx. I have a video of me installing the tranny/engine into my car and you can see the shifter is right where it needs to be!

i have a question, i see in some places that the cd009 transmission is listed as cd009/cd00a. is there a difference between the two or is it the same tranny ?

Hey Pablo! Yes the CD00a and CD009 are the exact same transmission the CD00a is just a newer part number for the CD009! Hope this helps!

W58? The w58s paired to US market 2jzge motors were a bit fragile, however Toyota put more into this trans than anything else in the w series. The models after 1989 were definitely stronger, but Toyota reinforced the shit out of w58s that were originally paired to turbo motors like the 1ggte. The reinforced w58s from turbo cars are sometimes worth 4-5 times the amount than that of their NA compatible counterparts. Some say they hold up to the r154.

I had a w58 and blew up 3 of them on a 7mgte making 600hp 3d gear just pop. There also a w59 on USA is300 stick..it bit weak but shifts better that r154..my 2j cressida has one and like driving tractor but hold more than 700hp

Hey Justin! I mentioned the AR-5 in the "honorable mentions" section of the video near the end. It is a good transmission don't get me wrong, but I have heard some bad things about it from a friend who tried using it for a swap, so in my opinion it causes more headaches than not. But if you want to use it, go for it!

@@TunerFaction I’m on my 7th since 2012 on tuned 5 cylinder Colorados tuned over 7k they hate 3rd at high rpm and lock out destroying synchros and pinions. I would compare it to a W58 non turbo that use to be cheap and relative, not anymore. $1500 with high miles.

The Magnum uses the 6060 internals in a different case. The main difference being the hard mounted shifter and slip yoke. Both of which were needed for us "older" Mustang owners to be able to use it. For the cold notchiness try a different fluid.

I have very limited knowledge of auto transmission options for the 1/2jz swaps so I decided to leave them out of the video. Sorry if that is what you were looking for!

I'm sorry... 2JZ-GTE VVTI engines are going for 10k???? I know NON-VVTI engines are up there, but there's no way VVTI's are going for that much already.

I just paid 9200 cdn for a 2jzgte vvti.....there expensive now , even cd009 are 1800-2500 cdn used
