You would need to start with prevention. There is a lot of information about it on internet. Haven't seen it neatly sacked for beginner with links to more in-depth topics. It's probably better to hire a professional as a home user, at least for a few hours to asses the situation and for advise.

It starts with simple things. Are all your machine protected? Are your policies good and secure? Get a health check from your vendor. Are all your endpoints healthy? Test your users. Your users are you first line of defence. If they don’t click the link or open that document then your anti virus won’t have to stop it It can get more complex from there, but get the simple things right and you have set a good foundation

Wannacry hit me like a brick. I think I got it from my university worksite after it infected some system somewhere along the line. It took down a giant billboard at the centre of the city, displaying the ransom message proudly for a couple hours, a red ticking clock of doom (this was after my comp had been infected). Sucks for them, I was planning on rebooting my system because the hard drive had started glitching up (still using it today). I'd backed my important stuff already, so all that was left was to install all the other software over the period of a month or two.

As someone who's been following ransomware since cryptolocker (at age 7-8 may I add lmfao) it's so scary to watch this threat which was once this kind of uncommon thing explode into the mainstream and then be going after businesses. It's nothing new now but watching it unfold was something else (especially considering wannacry infected one of my old computers)

Hi Leo, Just recently as you know zloader is a banking trojan that bypasses WD defenses using Powershell this is where you may need another AV or add another layer to WD defenses. I do see more of these types of attacks to gain access to your system banking credentials.

I got attacked by the NQSQ ransomware 2w ago and only noticed it a week layer since i ignore my files and play some games, i said to this ky dad and he said to reformat the laptop, but i eliminated the ransomware but my files are encrypted

The thing that still pisses me off about the Colonial Pipeline attack was that it actually didn't shut down their ability to transfer gas at all, just their ability to track the cost of it

YEAH can you also make a video about which antivirus is best now (because intel brought mc afee so its a better now ) and also do the video focused on which antivirus blocks malware best then you can go on the user interface etc (make it so in a scenario of a home user)

I'd suggest the companies which suffered from ransomware and companies which want to avoid such troubles not to use the OS they all use, learn their lesson or learn from others mistakes and use a more secure, free OS.

I've been uder the impression that most of the time they get their data back. Think about it, it creates trust that when you pay you get what they promised and they can do it over and over again. I remember that when Garmin got attacked they even gave them some helpfull hints on how to make their security better. Even with this kind of business model you have to establish trust for it to work in the long term :)

Why windows doesn't support MAC (Mandatory Access Control)? - rethorical question This could reduce soo much the impact of ransom. Maybe we can parcialy sandbox an application with DAC rules (every app under a different unprivileged user)

A question: take multiple ransomwares which are known to be decryptable, and run them all one at a time on a machine. Can that machine's data be restored? (in theory it should still be)

funny the Russian one steals your data to their cloud before it encrypts it on your machine. This sounds just like the Apple iCloud. Then the put a link to keep on my computer, wihch when clicked deletes everything from the cloud and doesn't put it back on your machine. LOL.

(Not so) fun fact: the Colonial Pipeline attack didn’t affect any systems directly involved in the pipelines’ operation, but the billing system! Because of course money is more important than ensuring the gas supply…

as a private consumer, could i just the wipe the drives, format them and reinstall windows to get rid of the malware? i usually backup personal files, like pictures etc. on an external USB drive, which i disconnect after copying. everything else on my computer is expendable, so long the hardware isn't damaged. is that viable, or will the system still be infected after formating the drives and a fresh OS reinstall?

Here's some fix (for the OS only): Change your hard drive and install another OS Don't plug your installer while computer is running. After you reinstall it, don't use any account that previously used from the attacked os. Happens to me one time when I wrongly downloaded some CoD in the internet with a password "1234"

Am I the only one that finds successful ransomware attacks creepy? Not necessarily for the fact that “your things are ours now”, but because of the stillness your computer goes to afterwards. This might also be because I’ve seen gameplay of “Welcome to the game” and is just paranoia

I didn't google about rEvil before someone tells me to google, but if it copys your files to their servers there should be ip address of that server right? Like ik that they probably used proxy or something but if it uses someone else's pc that was infected to connect to other victims pc then police would need to be involved but then they could connect to victims pc (the proxy) and then they could see the server ip but probably rEvil uses thousands of victims pc for proxy so that even police wouldn't be able to do anything. Nice video btw

No, it does not upload to a ip address as such, it sends the files via a tor relay server to their server on the dark web.

@@moss816 yea i was thinking so but wasn't sure. Only way to stop them is for tor to give ip of them but they probably delete the logs so it's not possible....

@@moss816 ik how tor works, i read a guide about tor relays and everything tho i didn't go too deep. I don't know too much about tor but i know it connects to 3 relays. First that knows your ip address but doesn't know where you are going, middle or the second that doesn't know anything about you but just only transfers package and last or the third that only knows where you are going but doesn't know your ip. Tho i read that few months ago or about year so i forgot most of it. Also it's bit harder for me to understand everything as my main language isn't english. And i think i know enough for being 11 almost 12 rn....

@@klarkbj4159 the whole point of tor is to be untraceable, it's near impossible to trace connections to a server or host pc running running a tor relay node, let alone trace someone using a tor relay node, to connect to another tor relay node. In theory it is possible but is near impossible due to the sheer difficulty, of tracing such a connection.
