Girl groups were very popular in late 90s but like America died out mid 2000s. There was a brief attempt at revival around the same time in the west think Danity Kane, Pussycat dolls, then 5th harmony but nothing like the resurgence in girl group popularity that hit Korea in the late 00s

Hmm, I discovered K-pop in 2019, and immediately, my two favorites were EXID and Red Velvet. Then, it was Apink, Loona, Twice, WJSN the Cosmic girls, Oh My Girl, IU, April, and Dia. I like the 3rd generation K-pop girl groups, but I have an extensive collection including the 1st and 2nd generation SES, Finkl, Girls Generation, Miss A, Beste, Sistar, and Brown Eyed Girls. But my favorite became the Lovelyz, who I found a month before they disbanded. I can spend my whole day listening to them. The Lovelyz are the only Girl Group that I have every version of their albums, their concerts, all member signed albums and a light stick. They are the only girl group that I have an album saved and an album to flip through and look at. With a few exceptions, I could probably sell my entire K-pop album collection. The Lovelyz and The Beatles albums are the ones that I would take with me if I was ever stuck on a desert island.

Is this data taken every end of the year's record or as of 2024? If the numbers were taken this year, it defeats the purpose since groups that got famous during a later period will have higher number of streams due to fan streams than vs the real time of release.

Literally look at the charts in Korea back then and you’ll see that both twice and snsd deserved their titles as the nations gg… and twice just held a tour w 1.4 million attendees and is about to have the biggest concert by a gg in Japan in July (and is the most streamed gg on melOn). @@alec10050 again… even if u look at charts 2ne1 still did better with less songs? their songs lasted longer on charts, they are the only 2nd gen gg to win all 3 major daesangs (artist, song and album)… genuinely the only reason snsd was called nations gg the same with twice is because they sold better than most groups in their generation and had 1/2 year s whereby they were at the top then others began to dominate cause why if korea named then the nations gg did they drop them (twice) while iu and bp can still chart really well.. just asking cause iu has been in the game for years and she can still dominate charts and win awards, bp can still chart well probably the best charting 3rd gen gg in korea rn cause knetz love the 4th and 5th gen atm even their soloist do well on kcharts besides lisa because she’s not korean and knetz don’t like her that much.. so how is the nations gg decided.. cause knetz called them the nations gg but dropped then fast after that encore

SNSD always better at physical album selling but they are badly charting songs lol. 2NE1 in 2009 was still rookie but already achieved song of the year, already have 3 songs that charted no.1 for 10+ consecutive weeks and as we can see here they are consistent with having at least 1 song came to the top 5 of Melon's most liked song in every year. they were only active 5 years and where is SNSD in this video? only seen for 2 years 2007-2009 only. having your songs to be at top 5 most LIKED songs meaning that the songs did have good impression and received well by general public right? and since we are here talking about Melon...which is a DIGITAL chart, meaning all people can access and listen to their songs without buying the album first right? so what's the point of making SNSD the nation's girlgroup at that time?(which snsd really good at selling physical album)... really no make sense. I prefer wonder girls other than 2NE1 if we talked about nations GG for 2nd gen, bcuz wonder girls not only left a good mark in their rookie years 2007-2008 but also achieved international recognition better than SNSD- those who are making proud of their country should be nations GG aren't they?

Likes on songs isn't one of the main factors to show a song's success, because Tell Me and Gee were the biggest songs of the 2000s and they barely made this list, even if they both topped all the main charts for over a month. XD Also, SISTAR's Loving U isn't even one of their 4 biggest hits, but it's the one with the most likes.
