Every time I hear something about uncle mikes I cringe because of something that happened one day. I was berating uncle Mike’s and basically calling them junk while talking to a gentleman about firearms. Turned out he was the owner of uncle mike’s. This was back in the early days of the company and happened in Boise Idaho.

Is he the same Mikey in the commercials that they would use to taste test the cereal to see if it was any good? He's grown up with a whole different taste for sure. I bought 2 different Uncle Mike's holsters and 1 (soft IWB with plastic belt clip, velcro retainer)developed a hole on the barrel end from just sitting in a case. The 2nd (Firm shaped nylon with metal belt clip and adjustable SNAP retainer) I've been using for over a year and is Leagues better than the other model.

Well he ought to hear criticism from outside his company. If he can't take criticism, he should not be running a company. In Uncle Mike's defense, not everyone need a super tough holster for wearing. They work just fine for being a nightstand gun cover. Not everyone needs to spend $200 for a wet molded, double stitched, hand boned, wax burnished leather holster. And they don't need that high speed low drag kydex though holster with down straps. So they just need a cover for low stress gun sleeve or just to take to the range. $15 is just fine.

I'm a CCW instructor and in my classes I show everyone my "Box of Shame", which is a box of a couple dozen holsters I've bought or inherited over the years that don't fit the criteria for a usable holster. They range in price from cheap to expensive, but each of them has at least one reason why I wouldn't use it, knowing what I know now. (I also show a variety of acceptable holsters, also in a broad price range.)

Yes, and all the clone plastic ones on the market that this guy would point you to are so great, right?? Surprised he didnt call out Safariland for how many holsters they have that fit multiple handguns. There is nothing wrong with a holster that fits many different firearms as so many polymer firearms these days all look the same and have the same features. If the holster holds your weapon securely and you can easily draw from it, then there is nothing wrong with it.

I love my Safariland 571 GLS SLIM PRO-FIT for my Springfield Hellcat. It’s OWB, but still conceals the weapon quite well, and is very comfortable. I lucked out. Only have two holster (well three if you count that velcro ankle holster my daughter gave me). I like leather and hate plastic next to my body so I first went with the DeSantis Insider, but fast realized that it may end up putting a hole in my groin. With nothing to hold the holster open, it scared the crap out of me every time I went to re-holster. It sits on my dresser all forlorn now. I don't even want to give it to anyone lest they end up shooting themselves and blaming me. Then I found the DeSantis Inside Heat. It has a metal plate sewn into the top to keep it open. Works like a dream and very comfortable. I am now waiting for them to make one for the Ruger Max9 so I can step up a bit on my EDC.

Thanks for the humorous and informative article. I tell people that are considering concealed carry that the whole idea is to have the firearm concealed yet available for rapid use. They tend to focus a lot on the firearm itself and not enough on the holster. If someone can tell you’re carrying a firearm, it’s not concealed carry anymore. If you can’t get that thing out reliably and rapidly, you might as well just practice ducking and hiding. I saw a video of an off-duty police officer taking what must’ve been 30 seconds to get his firearm out. This is insane. Fortunately for him nobody else was a threat. They just kind of looked at him like, “what the heck is he doing?” If you thinking of doing another article, you might address the issue of how to keep a firearm secure when you’re not carrying it. I feel this is critical, especially if there are or there could be young children in the home. This is another thing which I think people don’t think about enough before they buy a firearm. By the way my favorite is the 1911, but I never tried to conceal carry it. My second favorite it’s a .44 magnum revolver. I didn’t even think about concealed carrying that one.

Honestly, I like the urban carry g2. I'm a tall guy living in a fairly anti-2a city and if I reach up for anything (hard to find shirts long enough) I'm going to freak out a lot of Karens with a standard IWB. The G2 is a little slower but it's extremely comfortable and if I expose my belt line, there's only a small unassuming tab (for which I have several excuses ready).

I have a collection of holsters sitting at home collecting dust in a drawer. among them is the urban carry and the urban carry g2. I had the same exact problem as described in the video. I always have to wear my belt tight or my pants fall down. That makes it incredibly hard to draw the UCG2. Cant tell you how many times I was practicing, and launched my gun across the room. And just forget drawing if your sitting down in your car. I do use it if I have to wear a suit and slacks. A gun hard to draw is better than no gun. I also tried the nylon holster that Velcros with its own belt inside your waist line. The problem I had with that was that the Velcro digs into your skin after a while and forms a nasty sore. I'm just using a leather inside the waist band clip holster now. I can even sleep with it on and it's comfortable.

I saw the video title and immediately thought of the Urban Carry Holster. I had one and it was terrible. I spoke to the manufacturer and they said to keep using it because they claimed the more it was used the better it would get. After a couple months, and no improvement, I contacted them again and they then recommended that I use a different size that wasn't actually designed for my EDC. I went against my better judgement and said I would give it a try. To their credit, they exchanged the holsters with no additional cost and paid for shipping both ways. After another 30 days and still experiencing the same problems, I returned the 2nd holster and got a refund. The idea is neat but it doesn't even come close to working as advertised.

The worst part of the Urban Carry Holsters is if it's not fitted properly (correct size) or your right hand is not exactly in the right place to grip the gun as you pull, you run the risk of launching it out of the holster and on to the ground. Then, what was "your gun" becomes "our gun" (to quote Active Self Protection's John Correia). HARD PASS!

I spend my money to buy quality holsters that I’ll be able to safely and comfortably use for a long time. Anyone dedicated to concealed carry while using the cheapest, most dysfunctional gun leather (or other material) should count on spending an equal amount over the same period of time due to the junk requiring replacement periodically. What is scary, however, is the individual who has been using something cheezy for years. Trigger safeties aren’t there to prevent neglect discharges, they are there to make the guns drop safe. Striker fired weapons are just as prone to NDs as any other pistols.
@stephen_crumley

You have no idea how striker fired trigger systems work if you think they are just as prone to ND as any other pistol. Striker fired pistols like Glock are triple layered safe. You can’t have a ND of a Glock by dropping them, regardless of height of drop. There’s trigger blocks in the way that can only be moved by pulling the trigger.
@tntac1
@tntac1 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are confusing an ND with a mechanical failure. The point I’m making is that the trigger safety doesn’t prevent a negligent trigger pull, it helps prevent the gun from firing when dropped.

@@tntac1 agreed. A ND requires the triggered to be pulled. An AD is when the triggers is pulled while doing something like re-holstering where the trigger wasn’t intended to be pulled but it was pulled by some other external force like a shirt. Even with Glocks 3 levels of safety the gun will still go off if the trigger is pulled by anything whether it’s a finger or clothing (there’s a video of guy shooting him self doing just this). You can have all the safeties in the world but there’s no safety against poor gun handling. Now if the gun goes off and the trigger wasn’t pulled either by accident or negligence you have a very dangerous malfunctioning weapon that needs to be addressed immediately
@AFreeThinkingDawg09
@AFreeThinkingDawg09 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephen_crumley striker fired (ex: Glocks) safeties only protect against a drop. If the trigger is pulled by anything it will fire. It could be a finger (ND) or an AD which is something like a shirt while re-holstering. Go somewhere safe and wrap you shirt tail in the trigger, like can happen when re-holstering, and see if it doesn’t go off. It will and people have learned the hard way that it will. None of the 3 Glock safeties will protect against that. The Glock safeties just require the full trigger to be pulled, it doesn’t care what’s pulling it.

Good Holsters are unique to the user. What is good for one person is not necessarily good for another. While your criteria is good and reasonable for a start, but by no means mean that a holster will work for you. For example, the picture on the video header is a person wearing a pancake holster. I have one and use it often for my Colt New Agent (45ACP) in concealed carry and it works great. But it really depends on the person and the weapon. Like most gun owners, I have a box in my closet full of other holsters I've tried and don't use. My favorite Colt commander holster is the Galco Avenger, but my M1911A1 holster is the Bianchi AccuMold Thumbsnap Holsters (only $45). I use these style holsters with all my M1911A1 framed weapons. Sometimes I go minimalist and just use the Yaqui holster, which fits all three M1911's. I use the AccuMold holsters for the field. They are made of cordura and clean easily, protect the weapon, and are easily/quickly accessed. I can and have used them for Concealed Carry, but the pancake holster's work best for that use. So the choice of what is a good holster for you is a personal preference and fit.

My LockLeather is garbage. The adjustable retention screw uses a piece of rubber tubing to provide resistance, and push back against the screw to keep it from becoming too loose and falling apart. I actually couldn't get the screw on mine far enough out to accommodate the width of my trigger guard, which is what the little internal clip grabs onto to keep the gun in place. I'd get the screw backed out juuuuust enough to allow a smooth draw, only to have the tubing run out of enough "sproing" to maintain the necessary outward pressure to keep everything tight. I ended up making little leather washers to add length to the tubing, and therefore maintain enough intetnal pushback. After all that, I still don't carry it because it doesn't cover enough of the trigger guard to be safe. I EDC with a Safariland now, and couldn't be happier.

I find it foolish to assume that you will have the use of both hands in a defensive situation against a 2 legged threat. Now for walking in the woods, hunting, or just being on the property I will often use a holster that I can only draw with 1 hand. Such as a shoulder holster or a belt holster for large hunting revolvers. Holsters that you need 2 hands to make a draw just seem flat out useless.

The urban carry is a fine holster. There is no other holster I know of that allows you to conceal a gun while wearing no shirt. I don't always use this holster, but when I cannot wear something that will cover a IWB or OWB holster then the urban carry works really well. There are compromises and it does not work with every pair of pants and belt setup, but nothing is perfect. Maybe it doesn't work for someone with a big belly, but maybe put down the beer and allow yourself to carry without wearing a large shirt or jacket.

I have the gen two and gen 3 urban carry. the main reason I like them is its definitely easier to conceal carry and most people will never know you have a gun because when used right it completely gets rid of the gun profile. I use them when I am at events and things that it can be hard to conceal with other holsters. they can be a quick draw if you use them by design and practice. I have had mine for about 4 years now and neither of them have failed me. one is for my 1911 the other for my glock 48. that being said I completely agree with the sitting thing and I understand why a lot of people don't like them. they are just a good fit for me as a mobile mechanic because I can move and work on vehicles without the worry of my customers knowing I am carrying at that point in time and I don't have to worry about my gun catching on things either.

💥I gotta disagree wholeheartedly on the Urban Carry being on this list. When was the last time he checked their website...2015?🤔 He didn't mention the Gen3 that IS the #1 type of holster he recommends...which is the Leather/Kydex lock Hybrid! They also make Holsters Now for Open Carry & Classic CCW Waist Band Carry...All with Either kydex trigger guard CLICK retention Or Powerful Magnet Retention if u have a light/laser mounted. Also the ORIGINAL design was Great for "Urban Carry"😎👍 in the City where Cocealability & Comfort are Paramount.🤫

I bought the newest model cuz it looked intriguing, made in the USA🇺🇸 & was pleasantly surprised! The leather & hand crafting is High Quality. The lock leather & magnetic pull out holster is ahead of it's time! Especially for bigger guys w/a bit of a belly or "Dad Bod"...this is way more comfortable in ur pant leg than ur waistband (no weapon imprint drawing attention) & doesn't dig in to ur waist when sitting. It only takes a second 2 draw the pistol standing or sitting...u just need 2 get use 2 it. They also offer traditional style waist holsters with the "Lock Leather" tech...if u don't wanna try a different way of carrying.👍

My thoughts on the urban carry is that it has the same draw motion as to where your using non dominant hand to lift your shirt so that the other hand can go to the fire arm.i own one and it’s true that you need effort to draw the whole holster to get to the fire arm. The thing i like about it is i feel secure coz i had an accident before that my fire arm fell out of my kydex holster.and also i can draw even im sitting with seat belt on inside my car.

When I first started I thought that Urban Carry type was pure genius and ordered one. This was probably 10-12 years ago so it may have been a predecessor of the current UC. Anyway, I got it and in short order I was like WTH? With little - no experience carrying I knew that thing was stupid. Exactly what you said and as described. I’ve tried everything since and outside of a little hammerless. 38 or .380 in the pocket, I’ve decided the most comfortable with a compact 9 is an IWB leather/Kydex hybrid.

How does a safety on a trigger protect from inadvertent trigger pulls? A shirttail or other object caught in the trigger guard can still push the safety and the trigger and fire the gun.

I bought urban carries lock leather holster and to be honest it’s not a bad holster. Only complaint I have is if you keep it tight enough to really hold on to your weapon reholstering can be a little bit of a chore. But the draw is not bad.

I can't believe you are talking bad about the urban carry holster, I have found it to be the best one out there. Whenever I put it on I can literally hear (or not hear) the footsteps of a Navy Seal on the sand....silent but deadly! I in fact have and carry 2 of them. Step one rip it out hard, that way the first firearm flies free, confusing or even disorienting the perp. This gives me time to complete my draw of the second one... holy moly feeling super tactical right now.

The brand Urban Carry actually makes quality gear. That one holster, the G3, is f***ing stupid. I own their LockLeather holster for my Shield 9 and it is very well made. I also own 2 of their dress gun belts. I’m a detective and wear them every day for work. I would highly recommend them.

My first and only current holster I’m sort of mixed on. I have a stealth operator multi gun fit holster IWB. It holds my Ruger security 9 fine, however it’s not always the most comfortable holster where it jabs into my hip often. It’s not awful, but definitely thinking about other options here in the near future. Not sure which way I want to go

I bought an Uncle Mike's Tactical OWB holster for each of my S&W 9mm carry guns and they have been rock solid for me, no problems whatsoever, I'm a strict OWB guy, not a IWB, so I think thats why they have worked so well for me. YMMV
@RequisiteFunction
@RequisiteFunction Жыл бұрын
OwB has a lot more options and a lot more flexibility in regards to tolerances, because it doesn't have to fit inside your pants or be against your skin. An OWB holster can fit 100 people equally right out of the box. An IWB won't fit 2 people the same way, in a room of 100 people. So I 100% beleive your experience. The problem with OWB is concealability. In my opinion, other than concealability, OWB is far superior to IWB in every possible way.
