Baseball Simulator 1.000 was a game by Culture Brain that had lots of replay value and had a battery inside to save your season. Ability to create a team was great and the different ball park venues were fun - mercy rule was in effect and you could win the game against the computer if you built your roster correctly. Power-ups in games weren't pure but it was fun. Music in the game wasn't bad either. I also liked that it allowed you to skip other team games you weren't involved in or watch them as the computer ran the simulations. It was true baseball entertainment.

Baseball Stars has got to be the greatest news baseball game. It was probably the most groundbreaking baseball game of all time. First game to keep track of stats, also first where you can make and name ur own team . You could make money winning games to power up ur players. Lastly the field perspective would scroll to the outfield on balls hit. Before that all field views were a static wide shot of the whole field

I spent a summer playing Baseball Stars. If you played a game against yourself in tournament mode, you would win prize money. So I would ten run mercy myself against the girl's team or the American Dreams. It was a bit of a hack that allowed you to earn big $ in a matter of minutes. If you did that enough times you could stack your team with stars. Other little hacks included buying rookies with high potential (90 points) and turning them into players with maxed out stats by using that money. Since upgrading your players points was randomized (one to six) points, you only saved the game when you received higher points. My team had all superstar players with 89/90 points.
@malloy5641
@malloy5641 3 жыл бұрын
I did the same except it was for 3 summers in a row (all through Little League) starting basically on the first weekend of Little League. The team with the most Prestige was the Lovely Ladies. You could usually beat them with a decent created team. Make 5 teams and put all the 90 attribute players on your squad. The hack was to have the 2nd controller pick first, so your prospect wouldn't lose any attribute points in the trade. The only reason this game isn't my all-time favorite game ever is that one screw-up without holding in RESET would delete your entire save game. I can remember almost crying as a 10-year-old boy coming home and seeing my younger cousin playing Baseball Stars on my NES, knowing that his lack of understanding of the power saving function deleted my create a team...it still breaks my heart when I took the controller only to see the blank spaces where my create a team should have been. Most of my friends preferred Little League World Series, but I think that was only because you could pick your State (and hopefully they were good).
@MonsterERB
@MonsterERB 3 жыл бұрын
Same here. Had a superstar team called the Renegades, eventually every player was maxed out at at least 88 points. Then I would use them in season mode. In order to avoid the 10-run mercy rule, I would have one or two pitchers that their sole job, was to hit batter after batter on the opposing team, to force in enough runs where I could play another inning and get more chances at HR/RBI.
@andybassham2369

Great list. Baseball Simulator 1.000 was another fun one with all the power ups. I actually preferred RBI 2 to the first. Three of my friends and I had leagues with that game where we kept stats in a notebook. Bad News is so underrated. Because Baseball Stars and Little League were both SNK they were very similar. I remember the big difference being that in LL you could jump on defense but couldn't in BS, but as you noted, you could climb the wall in BS and not in LL. I had no problems hitting HRs in LL by the way and definitely robbed a few HRs by climbing the wall in BS. My best friend got Bad News and Baseball Simulator for his birthday one year and we played both games all day and all night. We finally realized the sun was coming up and had to finally get some sleep. Ha.

Love RBI! As a Detroiter I always go with the Tigers. Trammel, Gibson, Sweet Lou, Chet Lemon, Darrel Evans, Jack Morris, Willie Hernandez, Doyle Alexander..etc. (Alexander had a great year in 88 but we gave up a young pitcher named John Smoltz, a Michigan native. Of course no one could anticipate Smoltz becoming a HOFer...hindsight is def 20/20 haha) I was 3mo old when the Tigers won it in 84 but I still remember my first game at old Tiger Stadium. Walking across the catwalk n lookin down on the lower deck crowd, sitting in the bleachers and seeing that HUGE outfield, all that beautiful green grass and the sun hitting the blue and orange seats. The best was sitting in left or right field in the upper deck, it would hang over the lower deck so you couldnt see if a ball was caught, a gap shot or a HR until you heard the crowd. Loved going down to Michigan and Trumbull in Corktown w the original cobble stone street still there. I was 5 years old and the Tigers were past their run, def a shame that they couldn't get to or win the Series one more time. Damn you Blue Jay's and Twins lol. Remember kids, back then you had 2 divisions in each league. East and West and the AL East in the late 80s was LOADED. Tigers, Blue Jay's, Twins, Red Sox...Hall of Famers all over those rosters. If you're too young or never saw a game at Tiger Stadium I highly recommend looking up vids on KZfaq or pics, vids online. Great old ballpark. CF was like 445ft lol. 50,000+ seat capacity. Dudes blasting balls OUT OF THE PARK, literally, I saw Cecil Fielder bomb a ball over the roof. They say Mantle hit one something stupid long that landed in a lumber yard across the street back in the late 50s early 60s. Like 500+ feet...dude was probably hung over when he did it too lmao kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9iDmsmAksi5fnU.html

Bad News Baseball is my favorite in the genre, and is largely forgotten. Bean balls were a fun part of that game. The issue I see with the Little League game is a matter of scale. I'm guessing the developers compromised by making home runs rare, but keeping the field dimensions. Perhaps they thought a 60 foot diamond and short fences would not be appealing? I would think the opposite when one considers all the other baseball options out there.

I remember playing RBI Baseball as a stand up arcade game before work with my best friend. I was banned from playing Oakland due to the bash bros. But Baseball Stars is, in my opinion, the greatest NES baseball game. To me, it is RBI Baseball on steroids. The ability to have a 6 team league with a total of 125 games each(25 vs each opponent) AND have those players grow was unheard of in the early 90s. You said it was a great solo game but to me it was an even better game to play with friends. Getting a group of 6 people to play once a week was a major highlight to my gaming experience. Also, those wall catches are possible along with some great diving and jumping plays as players gain skill points.

I had no idea that RBI was a stand alone arcade machine. While you make a convincing argument for the merits of Baseball Stars being a superior baseball game, for me and my younger self, RBI Baseball holds the number one spot. Thanks for sharing those great gaming memories.

@@naturalborncritic2052 I have an almost identical list to yours. Numbers 1 and 2 are on point. I think I would replace Little League Baseball with Baseball Simulator 1.000 though. But that RBI arcade cabinet is second to NBA Jam of my all time favorites. It was called "Vs. R.B.I. Baseball", as in "Versus R.B.I. Baseball". The team selection is different and plays just a tiny bit differently.

You’re clearly playing with the wrong team in LL baseball game. Play with a different team and it can turn into a home run derby. I actually always appreciates that runs came in a variety of ways in that game, so it felt authentic.

I miss this time in games where companies would take a chance making something different. At one point in time I collected every NES baseball game and I believe there is over 20. I have since sold them, but it truly was the best system for fun baseball games. You can add Dusty Diamond's all star softball, Base Wars, and baseball simulator 1.000 to the list of the most fun baseball games of all time.

Bad News Baseball was my favorite. Fast paced, addicting music, hitting bombs.. Doug , the leadoff hitter for Toronto, was pure money. Fastest player in the game. Bunt single, steal 2nd and 3rd, then sacrifice him home. Automatic run when he led off the inning. We would play that all day lol

Honorable Mention: World Series Baseball for the Intellivision Computer System...sure it pre-dates the NES games by about 5 years...but it was groundbreaking. The TV camera angles...the picture-in-picture for runners on base...and play-by-play voice on IntelliVoice. But if we're strictly talking NES...then yes...Baseball Stars was the best. The ability to run a league where it kept all the info after you turned it off was mind-blowing at the time. Plus the way it kept stats was amazing...batting averages were tracked and changed every time the player stepped to the plate.

I was at university in The States when RBI Baseball game out; my American mates and I played it all the time in the dorm and for sheer fun, I think it's the best video baseball game ever on any platform. One of my mates dad pitched in MLB for years and was actually in the game! I still play this occassionally on my emulator but it's not nearly as much fun playing against the computer.

You have it perfect with RBI baseball. I must say I would rate Baseball Simulator just above that one. It gave the ability to not only construct a team but you had limited statistics. We used to use baseball cards and do drafts and put those players in the game.....truly ahead of its time.

6:45...That's a guy named Al Pedrique. He played 174 games at shortstop, mostly for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He never made All-Star in real life. Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals was the starting shortstop for the National League in the All-Star game in 1987. Since Ozzie Smith is in the game it leads me to believe the developer accidentally screwed up the NL All-Star roster & no one caught it.
