Tip for new riders: These mod videos are great, and everyone will tell you what you should do to your new bike. HOWEVER! Ride the bike stock for a while and see what YOU think the bike needs. Aside from protection mods (skid plates, hand guards, etc.) everyone's tastes tend to differ on mods. What's right for someone, might not be right for you. Just ride it!

Just got my 2020 cfr250l at age 50 and haven't been on a bike In 20 plus years/ this bike is amazing bone stock I dont care what anyone says if you can ride this bike can handle it / I'm 5"10- 220 pounds and it moves my ass well / flat land skid plate and hand guards and I'm doing it, I probably will upgrade the handle bars I'm I'm not one to drop a bike started riding at age 7 and had to put it aside do to finances and raising two kids but they are grown now and its dad's time out. This bike is amazing

Just to add to the sprocket size conversation. As any 250L owner knows, the 14/40 gearing is absolutely lethargic and renders 6th gear pretty much useless. The 13/42 gearing (like AD's bike) is perfect for the dirt-oriented rider. Plenty of low-end power for ripping around and the more technical stuff. With that said, if you are like me (a 50/50 dual sport guy), the 13/42 puts 55mph @ ~7k RPM (pretty much screaming for the 250L). Alternatively, a 14/42 gearing will get up to 55mph @ ~5k RPM which is very comfortable for longer highway rides. For someone who wants to still keep a highway comfortable bike, 14/42 is a good compromise.

I love my 250l. Bought the 2014 model brand new at the dealer, and out of the box, this bikes a bit of a slug. For starters, changing gearing is a quick and cheap way of being able to use second and third gear off-road, however, big gearing changes will affect your top speed. I personally changed my front to a 13 tooth and found it to be a happy medium. I also cut out the arrestor and snorkel for a little more airflow, and installed the EJK tuner. But by far, the most bang for your buck - a big bore kit. Some will say that it’s risky, but after I went about installing the BnB 305 kit, I would never go back. I’ve since converted back to stock gearing, and I’m able to ride off-road beautifully, and the power gain is night and day. The stock 250 motor I found to always have trouble maintaining highway speed, but with the upgrade, it’s been a dream. If you can tuck some money away to invest into a big bore, you won’t regret it. But make sure you send your fuel controller back to Dobek, otherwise the motor will run lean, and you will destroy your brand new top end. That is the main reason they fail. I’ve been running mine for 8000km now, and there hasn’t been a single hiccup

Thanks for the great video. I started out with the 2013 model, traded up to the 2017 model for the better exhaust and larger throttle body. That bike is even better. Immediately changed to the 13/42 gearing and you are right, it makes a definite difference. One thing you might want to inform your viewers of, you need to install a speedo healer to compensate for the different gearing or your speedometer and odometer will be way off. I installed the SpeedoDRD healer and it works great. The only tricky part of the install is getting at the plug you have to disconnect to plug in the healer but there are videos on line as to how to go about that. Get some long needle nose pliers and a good long flat blade screwdriver for the job. Going to try your exhaust and fuel programmer mods.

Taking off the spark arrestor on this bike when you live in California is definitely a no-gobut great video none the less, I'm looking at picking one up, I was looking at a Chinese tt250 but to be honest for political reasons I'd rather support Japan

Been eyeing the 250L for my light adv / touring / dual sporting and this vid is starting to convince me to get the 250L.

If you take out the spark arrestor out of the stock muffler and your rear turn signals on you will melt the right rear turn signal. If you go to a hardware store you can get a mesh stainless steel sink strainer. Take off the muffler end place the strainer over the holes and take a phillips screw driver or an awl and open up the mesh to place screws back in.

You can’t get rid of the CRF but you should go through it and re-grease everything over the winter just to freshen it up like linkage and steering stem

I bought a used crf250l. My mods include removing the fmf muffler and installing a real honda one. I also removed the hagon shock and installed a honda one. I removed the barkbusters and returned the handle bars back to the original design. I removed the fuel injection controller and returned the bike to new status. Bike now is quieter and it runs great. 1800.00 dollars to return everything to stock. I even went back to the stock tires. All of the junk...i sold at a garage sale last saturday.

Great summary. I didn t go for the ecu ejk, i just did, 5 holes in the air box for added air intake, change the chain and sprocket for better road and highway and off/road extra and put hand guard for added stability and less wobble at speed . i still ride the bike back country here in south africa and that little horse is happy. Better tire will help but i finished an light enduro with the stock IRC, i finished 4th and did 86 kms with the tank, so flat out almost everywhere. When on roads again i fitted road tires . It is not a race bike so, i compromise between reliability and miles for smiles.

Great vid and I agree with all your mods, it's a great recipe and have the exact same ones on my 250l, just have the fmf mega bomb header and muffler. Like what was commented about the judder spring, I noticed a huge difference, but I replaced the small judder friction disc with a full size one and barrnet springs. I didn't realize how bad the clutch was until I changed it. And can't echo enough of what you said about the bars, CRhigh bends FTW. Keep the vids coming! I'm still waiting for Duke wheelies😎

Well you've got a good start on upgrades, I would recommend the FMF exhaust. Either the Q4 or the Power Core and the header too, either the Mega Bomb or Power Bomb.(you already got the EJK) I run the Q4 with the Mega Bomb and I'm very happy with the results. It will also shed 9 lbs. I also recommend the Race Tech spring upgrade in front. My list of mods is long and yes I have spent alot of money but for me it's been worth it.

I don't even own a CRF but watched anyways. I'm tired of how big everyone says your bike needs to be. Rode my DR650 across Canada with a bunch of Goldwings on the longest charity ride in the world - over 10,000 miles round trip. I bought a CB300R after the new rider i tried to convince to buy it said it was too small. Love the Honda engine so much I want it in a dual sport and the CRF is it albeit with an 8mm shorter stroke.

Love the K760 Trackmaster front! Sticking with it for sure. Do yourself a favor, try a MotoZ Tractionater on the rear! We ride similar stuff and about the same mix of dirt/street, it will outlast the Trackmaster rear and outperform it by a long shot! You’re dead on about tires being the best mod followed very closely by lowering the gearing. Nothing is going to wake up a little two-fiddy like dropping them ratios!🤘🏼

Hey great bike . I have the same one with a few extras. Dirtstar rims and Talon hubs and the most important mod was my suspension front and rear Race Tech suspension. It handles so much better off road. Also a bunch of other non essential mods. But your 13/42 gearing is right on the money.

You will be happy to hear, that after a long search, I just found on facebook market place a 2020 Honda CRF 250L with 595 miles on it in mint condition. The machine is flawless! My question for you is I want to begin by changing out the sprockets to your recommendation of 13/42. I live in rough mountain terrain with mostly rocky trails. I could use more torque in climbing these trails. Will the current chain length be OK, or do I need a longer chain than what the current stock 520 14/40? With only 600 miles on the chain, I did not think it needed to be replaced. Thank you for your expertise. Mike in El Paso TX

My first mod to my 2020 CRF250L was a new helmet, Kevlar reinforced jacket and gloves. I am only 5’6” and 140ish and this bike can do 65 / 70 no problem stock. I don’t need more power per say. My complaint is the small fuel tank and my first mod is going to be a 3.5 gallon tank.

Awesome! I have a Japanese ECU for mine that I have yet to install. The mapping supposedly gives it a mid and top end boost. But they say you have to run premium fuel with it. Which I don’t really understand why. Great that yours came with the ejk though. I reckon I should do your sprocket suggestion though, to get a little more torque in the low end. A very experimental gentleman on the forums did dyno runs on a fully open airbox, and closed as normal, with his aftermarket exhaust, and there was no difference in the curve. They were identical, so his conclusion, for his setup, was that the airbox drilling or snorkel augmenting mods would not be worth the effort. For what it is worth. Love the vids as always, bud! Sooo, I agree with all these mods. Already did the EJK, track masters, spark arrester and air intake holes and have a 13 tooth front sprocket and will be adding the 42. What are your thoughts on the suspension? I feel it’s a bit squishy and could use some stiffening up. Any suggestions that won’t break the budget?

Get the kenda just look up duel sport kenda. It’s also a 90 10 I have it on my street legal 2007 kx450f and it’s performed very well I’ve had it for half a year and have done lots of street riding and it hasnt warn to much and it grips amazing offroad

I have done a fair bit of research to try to better understand my Big Gun Powerbox fitted to my Honda CRF250L, but I still have some questions...I currently have a relatively stock Honda CRF250L - so would fitting my Powerbox do 'anything' for me? (I understand that fitting these unit to adjust the mapping and fuel rate of the injectors is usually done because owners want to increase the air in or exhaust out) So fitting this to a stock bike with no increase to air in or change of exhaust, would not do anything right?? Plus where would I get the setting from for this?? (So what numbers should be set for Green, Amber and Red). I think that I now understand that I do not need to manually adjust the mode of the bike for the style of riding that I am doing...this unit is doing that for me automatically...?? Can I reset all setting to default for my bike? I presume that the unit I have would have been setup solely for my bike (it came with it) and have the correct plugs, so surely it can't be wrong. But it there a factory reset on this device to clear any previous configuration? Can I just remove the stock baffle from my exhaust and increase the air out side, also the snorkel to increase air in...if so what would the Green, Amber and Red settings need to be then?? Is there an online source for calculating these numbers based on different exhausts and scenarios?? Sorry for all the questions, and if you're able to give me some guidance, I'd really be rather grateful.

Thanks for the great video! I'm considering a 250L for my kid. He's almost 6'-2". I've heard the ergonomics on the 250L are great for shorter riders. Any thoughts on this bike for tall riders? I was leaning towards the WR because of the height issue, but if I can save some money with the 250L then I'm in. The WR seems to be designed for more experienced rider or taller. What do you think?

Yo brotha so I'm about to need new tires on my 2014 crf250l and been looking online and saw alot of hate for Kenda tires for a 85/15 street/dirt riding, that it handles really poorly on pavement. Do you have any experience with d606 or shinko 244s? I have a IRC GP22 in the rear and it didn't last very long. I would appreciate the advice! You're the reason I got a CRF250L 👊🏾

What's your opinion on the DR-Z400S vs CRF250L? My dad had a Suzuki dealership when I was growing up and so I've ridden a lot of trade-ins, had a lot of stuff but this was in the 80s and 90s. Leaning towards the Suzuki but with dual spark and direct injection coming on the 250L it'll be a tough call. A 400 could be my one and only last bike, not sure about the 250.

CRF250L or a KTM 350 EXC-F? I just don't know what to get. Rode when I was a kid on a CR125 and want to get back into it with my teenage son. If I mod out the CRF250L will and change out the gearing will it feel like it has 30HP?? I just don't want to regret not having enough power for the hard pack and single track stuff in Utah... Thoughts? 45 Years Old and weigh about 220.
