Kamp Kenan is an amazing place full of amazing creatures. Perhaps the biggest focus of all is on the tortoises and other turtles. These are simply incredible reptiles, and many make great pets. But what are the best pet tortoises at Kamp Kenan? Clint had to go find out.

One of the things they forgot to mention, though Clint has pointed it out in pervious videos, is that rehomed tortoises might be a better option for most people. As they mentioned, these animals often outlive their owners, and because of that, there tends to be a decent number of them looking for homes. There aren't too many cons, the biggest would be that if you got an improperly kept animal, they might have special needs, and if they need socialization (which by the looks of it, many of them won't) it'll be harder with a larger individual, and they might be harder to find (thought I kind of doubt that). But beyond that, I can't think of much, if you are set up to properly keep a tortoise, then you have the space for an adult tortoise, so the size when you get them shouldn't be an issue. A rehome is likely to be cheaper, and the biggest bonus is that it's already lived a while, so you may only be looking at closer to 40 years left instead of 60-80.
@NancyStrain
@NancyStrain 3 жыл бұрын
I have a rescue tortoise! She was actually in pretty good shape when I got her, costed me no money for the animal itself, and she'll still outlive me lol. Hatchlings are cute, but you're gonna have only a few years of bebby and 90 years of adult so, if you want the tortoise because the babies are cute, not the animal for you.

I think a point that was a little overlooked too was that rehoming almost any other animal, you run a huge risk of that animal being put up because of behavioural or health problems. With these guys, it's more likely that they outlasted their owner than them having any actual problems, which makes rehoming even better! Rehoming is always best in the first place if you can because despite problems, they need homes just as much as the next little guy. People who take in animals who are in need don't get them because they want something specific. They take what they do because they've connected to the animal, which is beautiful. And often means they will do what they can to make that animal's remaining years as amazing as they can. So, I feel like reducing the likelihood of unhealthy or difficult aquisitions is kind of a gift in a way, to those with a big heart.

I’ve seen places like puppy and cat cafes where you can, for a small entry fee, hang out with puppies and kittens just for some stress relief. It would be great to have something similar, but just with tortoises. Snakes and lizards are fun, but tortoises have such a calming “there’s no rush, we’ll get there when we get there” relaxed energy to them.

@@Princessbubblegum567 yeah plus as soon as financial incentive and the public is involved, the health of the animal can go out the window, sometimes over a long period especially. That said, it seems many tortoises are fine with handling once they've gotten used to it and have been captive bred, but wild caught especially seem skiddish, at least the interactions ive had with them. That amount of people would worry me lol. Maybe just a petting zoo/animal sancuary where they have hiding places but can interact sparingly :)

Omg I love tortoises SO much! Their pudgy little leggies are just so cute and how personable some of these little ones were, so precious! Waaah I love tortoises and unless I can stop being disabled some day, I can never have one. I'll have to just keep watching them on KZfaq. For real though Clint, I'm sure you won't read this because of how old the video is but I'll say this again on the next video you post so you do see it, I'll go into more detail there too. As someone who has been bedridden for the greater part of the last 7 years, and happens to LOVE reptiles, animals, and just nature in general, I am SO incredibly thankful for people like you who go out to these places, and out herping, and just show us how amazing and beautiful and wonderful the animal world, some of which I have never even dreamed of, let alone knew existed (dragon snake for one) is. I am super envious of your life, but I mean that as to compliment the person, and amazing ambassador to the animal kingdom that you are! Please never change. Your nerding out is super infectious and extremely educational, which in my books, makes it a boon to all those who come across you in whichever way they happen to. Showing us places that someone like me will likely never be able to see, is just so wonderful and in a way that most able bodied people generally don't even consider. When not in bed (like for when I have doctor appointments, or the rare times I'm feeling well enough to) I'm stuck in a wheelchair. I can walk but only for an upwards of 3 minutes before my legs are in excrutiating pain and/or just full on give out on me. So you can imagine that finding sea snakes on an island just off New Zealand, hanging out with cool tortouuse dudes, or even something simple as the Canadian equivelant to your herping in Utah is pretty much perma-out for me. You and the rest of the KZfaqrs of the hobby are all I've got. And I appreciate the heck out of all of you. *You're* the one who's stinkin' rad, my new friend.

When you guys were talking about you having a way with animals, Clint, I really understood what you were feeling and hownyou responded. I've always loved snakes, and have never had a negative interaction with one. I will always remeber the moment I knew I wanted a snake. I was a really little girl and I have always loved all animals. I had always really been drawn to snakes but never really got to interact with them often. I don't think it was my first time holding a snake, but I was looking at a black and white baby king snake at a massive chain petshop called Pj's Petstore here in Toronto. It was the smallest snake I had ever seen, and I was instantly inamoured with the little thing. An employee came by a few times, myst have noticed I was so fascinated and asked if I wanted to hold it. I of course said yes, and they got the snake out and handed it to me. I couldn't have been older than 10. My mom was nearby, and the employee stayed with me and told me about snakes while I held it. Meanwhile? Yeah the snake curled around my hand, it's tail aroundy pinkie finger, and I kid you not, it fell asleep. I'm not talking a ball python, it was a full on KING snake. I was so heartbroken that I couldn't keep it. I knew it was asleep too because not only was it not moving and had its head resting on its body, the employee confirmed it. Since, I didn't have much of a chance to hold snakes, had I done so, nothing like that ever stuck out. That was until I got my baby Kira about 15 years ago now. I loved that snake. It was just a plain old normal morph ball python, but all I knew about ball pythons at the time was that it was cheap to get one and I loved the one at the store. This snake would follow me when I went into the store, and loved to kind of stand up as tall as it could before wavering and falling over. I just had to have that silly little noodle in my life. Any time I went to take Kira out of their enclosure, they would be "standing" just so excited to be out. Kira would then fall asleep on me. We would watch TV together, I'd give them nice quick warm baths with just about a quarter inch of water every once in awhile, which Kira absolutely LOVED! I just had so much fun with that little yep rope. Unfortunately, I got her while in a relationship and because I moved out, and I didn't have anywhere to go (his and his mother's names were on the lease. I broke up with ex, he kicked me out) I had to leave Kira behind. When I was finally able to come back to move my stuff into my new apartment (had to stay with a friend for a week) my ex had moved out, and took my snake with him. I was just thankful he hadn't also stolen my cat, nor just let her out to spite me. Especially since his sister had forced me to get my cat declawed 🤬. I couldn't afford the snake and enclosure and all that, after that, so I had to wait. Then I got pregnant. Now, I have the means to be able to afford a snake enclosure again, and my son has been saving up his christmas and birthday money the last few years for a snake. My dream snake since Kira, has been a Blue Eyed Lucy. I told my son, and he has decided that's what he wants too. We will name him or her Sans. And now that I know how to tell the sex of a snake, I will know what pronoun to use!

I have to say, I would love to visit Kenan one day as well. I also cannot wait until I am finally able to purchase my own house where I can dedicate an entire room to 2-3 tortoises and another room for some other reptiles I've wanted for years :). I currently have a Russian Tortoise, and seeing him active every day is just such a joy. I was worried for a bit because he wasn't pooping a lot, and spent most of his day with his eyes closed, but after forcibly putting him out of his house in the last 2 weeks and soaking him a lot more than I normally would, I am happy to say that he has come back to his former self :)

I’ve had chelonians for about 8 years. I’m 18 as well. From my experience, KAMP KENAN is THE best destination for any wonderful Chelonian species and each subspecies.
