I've always thought Pep is the greatest elevation manager of his generation. He doesn't build from the ground up, he gentrifies an already existing establishment. Just when you think you have been successful, bring in Pep for record breaking success. That Barca team was built from shambles and molded by Frank Rijkaard to UCL champions, he took over and dominated with the 6 titles in one year. He then took over a treble winning Bayern team even though he couldn't win the CL. Then he took over an already title winning Man City team, spent over £1bn and 8 seasons before winning a Champions League which was what City were missing when he came in. Sir Alex (maybe even Wenger) over Pep all day.

@philippeh3904

There’s not really much debate tbh. Sir Alex Ferguson is easily number one. Pep Guardiola is number two, charges pending of course. And Klopp is easily number five. The real debate is between Wenger and Jose. Wenger won two doubles and an invincible, also had the longevity. But Jose won back to back titles, the 15 goals conceded in one season as well as a higher points total. But Wenger for me shaped the premier league more. So I’d put Wenger number three and Jose number four. Obviously this could change depending on Pep and Klopp this season.

Sir Alex is 1st. He won 13x titles, 2x CL, won a fuck ton of other cups, and had arguably the two best PL team ever. Also unlike Pep, when Sir Alex took over Man UTD, UTD wasn’t a top of the table team. United was a fucking mess and he had to build it up from ground zero to what United is today. Also what Sir Alex did with Aberdeen might be the most impressive thing done by any of these other managers. He won the league multiple times at Aberdeen. He did that by beating Rangers and Celtic which nobody has done since he left nearly 40yrs ago. He also beat Real Madrid to win the European Cup at Aberdeen. Pep is amazing but he’s 2nd(and that’s OK). What he’s done is insane, he did manage arguably the greatest ever team in Barca, choked at Bayern, and has done incredibly well with city. Pep took over a top team with infinite money. City won the league 2x a couple years before Pep came. They finished 3rd the year before Pep was hired. What Pep has done at City is massively impressive, but let’s be real it’s not close to as impressive as what Sir Alex accomplished/did. Pep has always come in to great teams already built, with infinite money, and he’s elevated great teams with infinite money to another level. Also if we are criticizing Sir Alex for only winning 2x CL, saying he should’ve won more, that’s a fair and valid point that I agree with. However, let’s not ignore Pep at Bayern. Pep had INSANE teams in Germany and did fuck all with them. Pep has also choked a couple champions leagues already at City. Yes he finally got over the hump and won it last year, but he’s choked multiple times with City in the Champions League. Choked against Real Madrid and choked against Chelsea. Lastly to the point of comparing Pep/City’s spending power when it comes to buying players to what Sir Alex did back then is insane. Sir Alex built that money/spending power and they were generating it. Man City isn’t generating that money fairly and the reason they only have that spending power is because of the owners. Everybody knew it at the time and then it was confirmed when City had 115 charges. Pep is amazing, but he’s not a better manager than Sir Alex…AND THAT IS OK.

Man United were so far ahead of the competition in the PL in terms of pulling power in the 90s-Early 2000s waaayy more than Man City. Think about it this way, Man United signed Veron, who was Serie A player of the season for 27 million, nearly a full 100 percent more than the next highest tfr fee ever paid by a PL team £14m for Shearer by Newcastle..Their closest rivals, Arsenal BEST PLAYERS were 3 players who flopped in Serie A. Bergkamp, Vieira and Henry. Think about that Man United are buying one of the best player in the Serie A, and Wenger, and the rest of the league getting cast offs. Im a United fan, the only thing i can compare to Man United in the 90s to now, is Bayern in the Bundesliga in the 2010s. Leeds won the league in 1992, United bought Cantona from Leeds and win the league in 93. That's like Liverpool winning the league in May 2020, then Man City buying Salah in August 2020

I am glad Fergie ruined Harry's childhood. Fergie was lucky he got the class of 92 but Pep wasn't when he got Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta coming through the youth system. If you measure both with the same yardstick, then everyone will agree with what Grizz said at the start of the session. There is one great manager which is SAF and one great coach that is Pep. Can Pep become a great manager, we will never know, because he will always work at a place with great resources (read money pit) and top of the line, Director of Football, Director of Recruitment, Performance Director Etc. Fergie oversaw all of those departments/ functions.

SAF had a monopoly on the prem for a long time. United WERE the City of the 90s and 2000s, the only difference between the two managers is that Pep won way more trophies per season and revolutionized how the game is being played over and over again. SAF was a great manager but to just exclude the fact that if they didnt get their world class players from the academy they just bought the generational talents for huge price tags at the time and was saved by his players just being way more talented than the opposition instead of actual tactics. And he also left the club in shambles that was an impossible mess to deal with for the next manager. The only reason why SAF would be first is because of the longevity otherwise Pep steamrolls this debate any day of the week.

a whole paragraph to lie about SAF's spend when he only spent the most in 3 of his 26 seasons. nice try tho 😂
@mark5338
@mark5338 2 ай бұрын
@@Nightsu yes lets take in most spent instead of average spent. United were on top end of high spenders for all their time in the prem. In the most spent you can also make a case that City arent actually spending because theres Chelsea United and Liverpool that took the "crown" from them in that department under Pep. And United was the team that inflated the market with their big singings in the first place and this all happened WHILE they had generational talents coming from their academy over and over again. So if they didn't actually already have the best players in the position they just bought them, which is called a monopoly and SAF had it for a long time. And ofc the fact that Fergie time even existed because everybody knew United were getting favourable treatment from the refs every season. Were they under a payroll we don't know, Pep never had anything close to SAFs ref treatment if anything it was the opposite.
@No-gq8hg
@No-gq8hg 2 ай бұрын
United didn’t have nearly as much money as City have now even with inflation. The reason they could get all the best players is literally because of Fergie. United weren’t good at all when Fergie took over and within i think 6 seasons he won us the league and literally dominated English football for about 20 years. It’s not like United were state owned like City are now, the reason they were like City is because of Fergie whereas City just had loads of money from Sheikh Mansour Pep didn’t create that. It’s not even close Ferguson is clear
@mark5338
@mark5338 2 ай бұрын
@@No-gq8hg oh yea thats why United dominate the list for the most expensive signings including inflation. Veron Rio Rooney are all 170m singings today. And theres a shit ton for 130m. 0 Pep singings make the top 20. United are also now the highest spenders after Fergie left they just don't have anything to show for it since the club is a mess.

What team actually did Pep take over? The majority of players were shipped out in the first 2 seasons. Kompany barely played at all because he was injured ALL the time, Aguero was also injury prone and was coming to the end of his career and David Silva was close to his end aswell. So the only players he actually inherited were KDB, Fernandinho and Sterling. He got rid of the GK, whole defence and wingers. Crazy to think he just came into the job that was set up for him for decades, he had to change his tactics a shit ton of times not only to adapt to the premier league but also to adapt to different types of players who weren't up to Peps standard in the beginning of his time at City. And after a few seasons of replacing players and finding the optimal system he's dominating the league playing vs one of the most dominant 2nd place teams in Liverpool every season.

Both Mourinho and Wenger won 3 Prems each. Jose won the CL twice and Wenger none. Klopp has 1 Prem and one CL with an ENGLISH Prem side....neither Wenger nor Jose did that. On top of that is the Prem points tally - NO ONE has reached more points in a season than Klopp and Pep AND they were RIVALS - deep that for a second! Context matters. Now Pep has a CL with City i.e. a Prem side aswell. So for me the CL with a Prem side catapults a manager higher. So it would be.....in order.... Fergie, Pep, Klopp, Mourinho, Wenger. Fergie is the benchmark - winning two CL's with a Prem club. The weighting of the CL is due to not only being League elite but the absolute best in Europe at the time too.

So Grizzly bear on your hypothetical “Fergie wouldn’t survive in this modern era in them first five years” it’s very interesting you just happen to come to the assumption he would make the same decisions in the modern era. Would Klopp of made the same decisions in the early 90s…maybe leave the hypotheticals at the door next time. Also here is a Rafa “Fact” for you to hypothesize on, between 1990-2012 Man United won 12 Premier League titles in 22 years with a lower overall gross spend than Liverpool, and a net spend of only £1.3m more per year. Look it up, Fact.

The need to highlight the point back to me though after you clearly see I’m aware of it is very telling. Who wouldn’t be sacked after six years at a club the size of United in this era with no success for six years, moot point. The original statement was that Grizz was only looking at the hypothetical one way for clearly agenda lead reasons which I’m also aware of. Also look at the facts not feelings on the financial spending of United. No honest United fan would downplay they spent but this myth they far overspent everyone is just a cope for all the bitters to lick their wounds as the actual fact is everyone back then had a much more equal opportunity but United just did it better. The criticism in the post Fergie years for United’s spending is obviously fair game and should rightly be vilified. It is this need for people to keep perpetuating this United brought the league when Liverpool, the big boys of the 70s & 80s spent near identical to United in the very same period United won 12 titles. Just funny how whenever United buying the league comes up though there is zero mention of Newcastle, Blackburn, Chelsea, City etc which equally or mainly outspent United but didn’t win much or anything in the first two decades of the premier league is obviously just down to United buying it all up right….yawn!
