I think the main thing that made me quit fast fashion altogether wasn't looking for sustainable brands or second hand shops, it was completely changing my mindset around how much stuff I really need. I'm way more mindful these days about the stuff I buy, I'll always try to think of an alternative that I already have in my wardrobe, or I'll ask myself 'if this piece of clothing was ten times the price, would I still want it?' When I bought fast fashion, half the time I was buying stuff that I didn't truly LOVE or need, it was just stuff that was so cheap I felt silly passing on it. Whenever I see a piece of clothing I love from a sustainable brand, I will always set it aside for a week and see if I think about it at all in that time, and if so, am I thinking about the practicality of it and how much use I'll get out of it, or am I fantasizing that somehow my life will be better with this piece of clothing? If its the latter, I let the thing go. It is a capitalist lie that our lives are made significantly better when we buy more stuff. When I'm tempted by fast fashion, I picture the people who create the clothes, how shitty their conditions are, how overworked they are, how underpaid they are, and I think about what I'm saying to those people when I buy the piece anyway. I'm saying their livelihoods are less important to me than 'looking good' and having the latest trends. That thought usually sets me straight.

^^^ THIS You put into words how I usually think when shopping now too! If I'm ever on the fence on buying anything, I'll ask myself if I would still buy it if it was $10,000 - most of the time I say no lol. Or if it's a luxury item, I'll let it sit in the cart and usually by the 2nd day I already changed my mind about it. I really love your comment, do you mind if I share it on my ig story? I quit fast fashion about 2 years ago; it's very disheartening when I see sites like Shein becoming more and more popular. Thanks for making this vid and committing to no fast fashion! I think the hardest part of shopping sustainably is most of these eco brands can be very bland and not flattering. I clearly have to step up my thrifting game 😂

You’re so right! If you look for an item longer, you’re gonna appreciate it more when you actually find it. Even more when you sew them yourself or fit them to your body after thrifting. You will learn to understand clothes and learn why it’s so bad to buy them at those cheap prices bc someone had to make them at one point for you to buy them. If you’re buying a 3€ top, those 3€ will NOT go to the people who made the item… Sewing is really easy and if you don’t know how to sew yet, you’re literally already on the perfect channel to learn it.

I can't say I've completely stopped shopping fast fashion (occasionally I do shop at Hot Topic if I have the extra money to buy some anime tees), but I do have quite a few pieces in my closet that I thrifted and I love them. One thing that helps me when thrift shopping (or shopping for clothes in general) is I ask myself, "Do I see myself wearing this a lot?" If the answer is yes, I buy it. If the answer is no or I'm unsure, then I don't buy it. One thing that will help us with this fashion crises is to stop buying things just because they're trendy.

Being a fat fashion girlie on a budget, it is so hard to find clothes elsewhere that doesnt doom me to floral clothes, peplums and homely clothes. Well.. in terms of size inclusivity.. clothing brands just started to noticed that they have to produce more minority sizes so there are not much minority size clothing flowing around in thrift market.. (if there are they are all from the same clothing brand) Being able to turn off filter by size doesn’t solve the problem…

Instead of throwing your clothes away, give them to a friend/family member; you could also give your old clothes to a homeless shelter, women's/men's shelter, neighbors, have a garage sell, sell them online, or even upcycle them. There's no excuse for the amount of clothes in the landfill right now, hell you could even cut up your super worn-out clothes to fill pillows/stuffies, or patch up holes in shirt/pants/jacket!

2020-21 was peak fast fashion addiction for me. It got my foot in the door of experimenting with style past my usual graphic tees joggers. However, the shein app made it so easy to just wake up, check the new sales, and buy something. Every day, and it added up. Today, I can’t even fathom how often I fell into that trap. Buying new clothes every single day is just ridiculous! And I realize that now. Being trendy is fun but eventually you get tired of half the clothes breaking/feeling cheap, and most importantly to me, just not fitting right. Thrifting is only so so in my area, but that’s why re-fell in love with discount stores! There’s still the satisfaction of hand picking each item, and I treasure the individual items in my closet a lot more now. I haven’t logged into the Shein app in several months now, and I plan to keep it that way!

While I am not big on fast fashion either. It’s easy to say you will no longer feed in to fast fashion when (I’d assume) you’re probably getting clothes for free. Many of us to stay fashionable have to resort to cheaper avenues to even stay slightly with trends. I am the type of person that likes basic layers and layering pieces, purchasing items that will stand the rest of time. I’ve had items in my closet that I have been wearing for over 10 years. I also don’t really go with what is “trendy”. I have my style and taste and just go with it. Sometimes challenge myself with pieces I’d never buy for myself, and end up evolving those tastes. I found you recently, and can’t wait to binge your channel! Love the content.

I looove thrifting. I still buy fast fashion sometimes, you can't always win I guess lmao like sometimes I just want a really specific piece and as someone who grew up unable to express my style bc of super strict parents, it's so nice to just go on shein to buy whatever I want and slowly expand my closet and build it to how I've always wanted. but man if you like going to a physical store and looking at clothes you will love thrifting. yeah most of it is like middle aged woman clothes but sometimes you find a rare gem and that's kind of the fun of it for me? also ironically I have seen shein clothes MULTIPLE TIMES at my local thrift store. I've even bought a corset at a thrift store! I've gotten some really cute pieces I've never seen online just from thrifting. you don't have to quit fast fashion right away but if you like shopping, just try to make it a habit to go thrifting once a month or whatever works for you instead of buying fast fashion as much. I like to kind of think of it as a treasure hunt lmao. even when I lived in the middle of nowhere in oklahoma I found a REALLY cute and suuuper comfy pastel lilac t shirt and I wore it allll the time for a while bc it was so adorable. I actually prefer thrifting pastel clothes bc a lot of the time for some damn reason, clothes online that are marketed as pastel are significantly less pastel irl. like it makes no sense lmfao wouldn't it be cheaped to use less dye?? but finding pastel clothes in a thrift store isn't hard bc a lot of the time the clothes are kinda worn and faded (and way more comfy than if you had bought them new!) plus you know exactly what you're getting. I really wanna buy more shoes when I can afford them and I'm def using thredup for that, and it helps with leather boots bc they'll be broken in and not be so harsh on my feet/ankles. I can never find shoes in my size at the thrift store so I'll just keep searching on thredup for shoes I like :)

I actually found out about fast fashion only last year, when someone asked me why I support fast fashion. I had no idea what it is, even though I've been into fashion for years. Ever since I've been trying to shop it less and shop less clothes in general, also thinking about it more carefully if I actually need it. I enjoy going to second hand shops, because I can sometimes find something unique. But I still shop fast fashion, because I keep finding everything I'm looking for and easily. Often for very cheap, but for me fast fashion is not even always cheap. Like H&M, it's not even cheap most of the time. And I don't understand why people say fast fashion clothes are almost always poor quality and they don't last long. I have so many clothes from H&M, Aliexpress and Yesstyle that have lasted for years, even the clothes with very poor quality. I would shop second hand more, but everytime I try to look for something I need, I never find it. And sometimes I find, but it's way too big for me :

I loved this video! The editing style is so cool! And I love ThreadUp, I just got the most beautiful metallic pink Eliquii jacket for a steal from them! As for fast fashion, I agree with what you said but would like to add a couple of things: finding sizes: I'm plus size myself, so I get it, but there are so many new alternatives popping up, and while I want to be sensitive to the fact that fast fashion may be some people's only real choice, but I do feel like that reasoning is starting to become a meme to excuse people from even trying (again, I get if you can't find anything in their size that you can afford, but I hear that reasoning so much, even from non-plus size people). On the other hand I just googled "affordable plus size alternatives" and the first thing that popped up in my search was an ad for Shein, so that's a problem, but there are some good lists of you keep scrolling! Second, I think a lot of new sustainable creatives are popping up as small businesses, and that is really cool (I'm working on being one of them). I'm looking forward to more people branching out and buying thrift flips from small businesses this year! Sorry for the novel, lol, I guess I had a lot to say!

One more thing (this has been a huge rant, sorry!): Shein is especially bad, even if someone reading this goes out and buys fast fashion right afterwards, please please do not buy Shein! Their labor practices are horrendous, like literally the worst I've ever heard of, and yes, they are worse than the other fast fashion companies.

I get impulsive when I have an idea of an outfit and can't find what I want only on fast fashion website. I see an outfit, I want to create it, so I start looking everywhere for the pieces and sometimes that through thrifting and other times, it'll be on a website to some brand. Like your blue vest your wearing, LOVE it. And I want one, even in a different color. I'd need the name of the brand, the name of the style of clothing and that's the issue with me finding something. i love you Alexa but you are speaking from an extremely privileged, American perspective. this whole video is practically a three up ad; and like you said its only US/Canada. Also, regarding donation, the people receiving the "10 pounds of clothes" i donated don't own 10 pounds of clothes, that's why there was an initiative to donate clothing to them. You are a fashion content creator, you have benefitted from sponsorships from fast fashion brands, received free clothes, and have had the privilege to spend hours and hours of thrifting in Los Angeles. It's very easy to declare that you are "quitting fast fashion" when you already own more clothing than the average person just trying to express their own style. Thred Up does not deliver to my country. Shipping time is inherently longer for anyone living in my country because we live in a small island. There are definitely thrift shops, but in all my years of visiting stores all I've mostly found are grandma tunics. Additionally, it really disgusts me when corporations and people in privilege talk about how we the consumers are the ones killing the planet. It's climate doomism and victim blaming. I'm not the one exploding mines and harvesting petroleum. We can do our part of course, but "our part" is a fraction of a fraction of the solution. Voting with our dollar is important, but who is the one with millions of dollars exploding the planet (corporations) and who is the one buying $50 of two shirts, a pair of jeans and a tote bag at one of the few stores we have in the mall? You brought up a good point at the end, quitting fast fashion is almost impossible, we contribute to the cycle in one way or another. For example, if we make our own clothes where can we get the fabric? Who made the fabric? Under what conditions? I am not saying that there's no point to your initiative and we should all just give up, but to sit in your 10K+ Los Angeles apartment paid for by sponsorships and social media views and say that there is no excuse for us to buy a black blazer on amazon is extremely tone deaf.

Most stores are actually fast fashion even at a higher price point. Check out the documentary called True Cost and there are few documentaries here on youtube - DW (a german publication) did a few pieces on it as well. Just search DW documentary fast fashion.

Fast fashion is really ruining thrifting too. ALL I’m able to find at my local thrifts are fucking shein defect clothes. FOR MORE EXPENSIVE THAN I COULD BUY ON SHIEN

I buy fast fashion because I am a photographer who is never going to wear the clothes I buy, plus I cannot use them more than once or twice, maybe alter them and use once more and then sell/donate.

I think as someone whose used SHEIN for some clothing once upon a time. It is not worth it ever. Nothing is quality ever. Even if someone says an item is good it’s usually only a review so they can get free stuff. To say you’re limited is hard. Cause there are a ton of clothing sites now that are second hand you can shop from. You do not have to buy in bulk 100+ items to make you’re self fashionable. Just a few cute pieces here and there that for the money you’ll spend in SHEIN you coulda bought a few nice pair of jeans and or nice tops. Look 👀 in your closet and ask your self what you don’t need anymore. Take those things out. Stuff you aren’t wearing. Try to actually make multiple outfits styling a single item or two with things you already have. You’ll be surprised what you come up with. Ask yourself how true a clothing item is to your personal style and wearability. If you live in a rural area where maybe a thrift store isn’t available check the second hand apps!!! I’ve supplied more wardrobe curated for me and even tried a few new styles just from depop alone. You can also adjust the prices to what you’re willing to spend. Just some tips! I haven’t literally bought anything fast fashion in forever now. My entire closet is just from me thrifting. All of my shoes are thrifted even. I don’t just limit my self to my town either I love taking a weekend trip away like an hour or two to thrifts and just set up a day to get some cute pieces eat out somewhere new. I really try my hardest before I even think of shopping online at like target or anything. I hope this helps or gives some ideas.
