Russia has a long watchmaking tradition. Probably the best known manufacturer is POLJOT, which was founded in 1935. Other well-known watch manufacturers are Vostok (the east), Molnia (the lightning) , Slava (Glory), and Raketa (rocket).

You forgot Konstantin Chaykin's manufacture. They make watches in small batches in quite small and cramped spaces, but their watches are literally at the top in terms of independent brands. The watchmaker is the president of the AHCI, an international association of independent watchmakers, and is considered to be the one of the highest echelon of independent watchmaking out there.

Shturmanskie (Штурманские) = Navigator's, it isn't brand, it was a model of the First Moscow Watches Factory, 12 april of 1961 Gagarin makes a first space flight with it on his wrist. And that flight gives the name of the brands - Poljot (Flight) and Raketa (Rocket). And today its Poljot Shturmanskie (Flight Navigators). Vostok (East) firstly was the model's name, but it was so popular that became a name of the whole Chistopol Watches Factory brand. Strela (Стрела) = Arrow. Okean = Ocean.

Excellent and knowledgeable presentation of great Russian watch brands. You are absolutely right about Raketa. Raketa wristwatches, have been manufactured since 1961 by the Petrodvorets factory in Saint Petersburg. The Petrodvorets factory is oldest Russian watch factory, founded by Peter the Great in 1721.

You kinda wrong in 1721 was founded Peterhof Lapidary Factory. In 1927 they made a facing slabs for the mausoleum of Lenin. Since 1929 they began to produce precise technical stones aaand began to produce stones for watches. They start to produce watches only after WW2, first their watches called "Pobeda" means Victory. all of them had mark TTK-1 which means - precise technical stones( точные технические камни)

Thanks for the review, large array of watches, yes the Raketa factory is still working and tours are opens. Today's the design and overall quality has been vastly modernized. Raketa's automatic mechanisms production is fully verticalized. Visiting this factory is an unusual stopover when visiting castles, museums and parcs in Saint Petersburg.

I have a Vostok Amphibia 710 (ministry case) I’ve had it for 1.25 years; I’ve worn it while doing construction; I wore it when I nearly killed myself on a dirt bike and I’ve worn it while doing much more stupid things. Sure I’ve scratched it but somehow the movement continues to work. For the money you pay it’s incredible. I’ve spent more on straps for the watch then it’s original price but given it’ll last 10 years it’s okay. My Casio while “tougher and better” on paper it feels cheap. The Vostok it army strong, I’ve abused it but it’s held up to the pressure

Hi, Russian here. One thing you seem to be getting wrong about Soviet watches is that the whole notion of a "brand" or a "company" can't be applied to them. Due to central planning there were no companies in the USSR, so they couldn't own brands. It's more correct to talk about certain factories that produced this or that kind of watches. For example, you say that since Shturmanskie were chosen for Gagarin, this speaks something about their quality. That doesn't really make sense because different watch models under the "Shturmanskie" trademark could've been produced on different factories. The watch used by Gagarin had that mark on the dial you can see on modern replicas: "МЧЗ1 им. Кирова". It's an acronym for "Kirov Moscow watch factory №1". That says more about the origin of the watch than the word "Shturmanskie". (Your pronounciation is actually close to truth. :) The stress is on "u" though: shtUr-man-ski-ye.)
@domino051970
@domino051970 3 жыл бұрын
There were companies in the USSR, simply almost all of them were state enterprises. The term "brand" or "trade mark" did exist as well. There were plenty of watch brands in the 50s in USSR, on the other hand, almost all factories produced Podeda cal 2602. But by 1967 all had been unified and every watch factory started to produce the only brand per a factory: 1MCz - Poljot, 2MCz - Slava, CChZ - Vostok etc. Export brands, as Sekonda for the UK or Cornavin, were an exception and used by several factories. All Soviet (not Russian ie since 1992) made Shturmanskie were made by 1MChZ (1МЧЗ) only. It Includes Shturmanskie type 1 and 2 (cal.2608) and Shturmanskie cal.3133. As for pronunciation, strelA is correct, not strEla

Gigarin didn't have the watch picked for him for the space flight. Nor was it even called the "Gigarin" model till much longer afterwards. He was given that watch as a graduation present from his flight school - and just happened to be the one he had when he went to space. One of the later cosmonauts wore a Vostock Amphibia. They now talk about these things to promote their capitalist brands - but at the time - it was whatever the Cosmonaut had was what was used.

I would love a Sturmanskie but the prices are insane so I stick to my 70's super-fugly Slava's and my quite impressive Vostok collection although I do have a 1950's "small" Poljot which was a prize for some national science fair and came on this ancient but beautiful tooled cuff band, I've done a few vids on Vostok's especially most recently a 090 "tonneau" Amphibia and the only dial type I have avoided is Scuba Dude as its just a bit toooooo cheesy for my likes. My favourite is my star shaped Komandirskie Admiralskie and my 82-ish Soviet Amphibia in the octagonal case, I do actually own a very ancient 1940's Boctok which works for about 10 mins but is so fragile it will likely stay that way. Vostok's are a superb way in getting into not just watch collecting but watch restoration and watch repair, I do def recommend owning a few of 'em, the black dialled tank commander is also a nice no nonsense piece as is the digital plane. Parts are exceptionally plentiful, Etsy is another place a good source for Vostok and other Russian branded watches.

Hey this is an old comment and may be a long shout but is there anyway I could please see your 1940’s Vostok? This may be weird but most Vostok models from before the 60’s have been long Forgotten by history. If you have a model from the 40’s it deserves to be shown! On this watch it is written - Made in Russia. This particular instance in the video was made after the collapse of the USSR. Many of these companies still produce watches. Many do not understand aviation. Therefore, there is no need to look for meaning where it does not exist. It was necessary to show the plane, and they did it))). But for the Briton this will have some additional value.
