Deer scent control is a lot harder AND easier than hunters think. What I mean by that is that there are way to many scent control methods or practices that hunters can try, but don't work. The process becomes confusing and overwhelming to the point that I have heard of some hunters - typically consistently unsuccessful ones - that spend over an hour each time they head to the woods, on scent control. The easy part about scent control is that if you control how much scent that you leave in the woods on the way in and out of your hunt, and your stand is located appropriately, then you your scent control practice is nearly 100% fool-proof for even the oldest of mature bucks. Before learning what works for controlling your scent for deer, it is important to understand what doesn't work, when it comes to fooling an old bucks nose.

Search and Rescue/cadaver dog handler for 22 years. Learning scent is a requirement. The way we train our air scent dogs is to put volunteers in the woods, typically under camo mesh nets and then run the dogs off-lead to find the subjects. You know your dog is working when they're out of sight, working. When they find the subject they are trained to return to the handler and alert, the handler shouts, "Show me!" and the dog takes the handler to the subject. So we're sitting around at base and someone brings up, "What if we're looking for a missing hunter that fell out of their tree stand, and used anti-scent products?" So we get a subject to use soaps and sprays and place him in the woods. You guessed it. Never slowed the dogs down at all. Picked the subject's scent up as if he was waving a red flag. Like you said, you won't beat a buck's nose. Our dogs can find drowning victims underwater or buried murder victims. Your scent can't be masked with a spray.

But if you smell like bacon and eggs or fresh poop, the animals won’t even get close….Odds man…..Odds…..I’ll bet I see way more animals using scent control than non users…

I know this is old but.you sir are correct.ive been a very diehard hunter for for over 35 years.i use to religiously hunt big old mature whitetails on public land.ive killed almost every one i persued.a dog & a whitetail in my opinion have the best nose of any creature on earth.you can not fool there noses with spray.i hand wash my hunting clothes in baking soda & soak them in activated charcoal.water mixture.then i hang out on clothesline to air dry.then i store in air tight container with a couple ziplock bags with holes in them filled with dirt.i also break off a couple cedar limbs & put in the box as well.i never take them.in my house or eat in them I never put them on & get in my truck.that being said.if you do not have the wind in youre favor. Youre gonna fet picked off by a mature deer.and i dont care what you do.if you step on a deer trail.they will stop dead in there tracks as soon as they hit that spot where you stepped.you can not fool a whitetails nose.or a good tracking dog.just have to play ur cards right, scout, & aproach carefuly.

I agree with everything you said. The only thing I’m on the fence about is if deer get used to four wheelers. I believe it’s similar to equipment such as tractors and such. I’ve had tractors and such be moved by where I hunt and from day to day at different locations. The deer didn’t pay attention to the equipment being moved at all. Another reason I’m on the fence is because Dr. Grant woods says they get used to them as well, and he studies deer. Not saying you are wrong by any means, I personally don’t like to ride four wheelers all over my hunting property. Just stating there are different opinions.

I agree as someone who worked in the woods in the winter after you cut timber in the same area for a while the deer would be eating the tops of trees you literally just fell with a chainsaw and are working on bucks up. The deer get so used to logging in some area they don’t care about loud smelly skidders or chainsaws

I use a ground blind these days I use a cover scent called Deer Dander, it smells like deer not urine just deer it’s on my clothes my boots and gear. I’m in a zipped up blind usually most of the windows are closed especially the ones that in line with each other just the shooting lanes that were cleared several months ago. This is the first season in three years that I’ve been out so I’ll let you know how I do. I got an invite on private land archery only but just across the street from the small 15 acres is State land so on the gun season opener my plan is to be in place in hopes that deer will be pushed into my area. If that doesn’t work there’s the late season when there are less hunters in the cold . I really enjoy your channel and so far I think that all of your advice is excellent maybe someday I’ll have some property of my own so I can utilize it. Tom Southeast MI.

I put in two ground blinds (made of brush) 10 feet apart. One is just a few feet lower than the other and is actually the better spot but it's only usable in the mornings due to wind currents there. After morning the winds take the scent right to the deer. The other blind sits on top of a granite ridge with trees all around same as the lower blind but the wind there blows behind me most days where deer rarely come from. It's amazing how much difference there is in wind currents just ten feet away and a few feet lower down the ledge. Being Texas it's hard to find a straight tree for a stand though I have found a couple I will use next year after a year of watching which trails the deer use and the winds normal directions. As for scent control I spray my boots with dead down wind, first year using it so can't say it works yet. But my cloths are all treated with smoke. I burn mesquite at work so hang my hunting cloths near the oven and let the smoke soak in then store them in a plastic tote. My boss just shakes his head at the camo clothesline when he comes in lol

I agree, however for years I have made my own scent reduction strategy, all for around $2-3.00 per season. Wash my hunting clothes, use baking soda instead of soap, take a shower, use baking soda instead of soap, mix 1 cup of b.soda w/1 gallon of water, bingo, instant spray scent reduction, remember to spray hands prior to touching trail camera..!

Jeff, question. I hunt National. grasslands here on Texas and it's especially hard to be able to use a good walk in and out path on some of the smaller units. BUT, there are some deep dry creek beds that are filled with greenbriars that COULD be used but would be extremely hard to walk through. Do bucks travel this dry creek beds or bed in them? Or should I be looking for a way to walk them...i.e. trying to cut my way through? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

When I hunted as a kid we had to pass through a cow pasture to get to our spot. We would step in cow shit before we walked to the stand. While you were up in your stand it would mask your scent as well. It seemed to work pretty well, it just sucked coming down afterwards.

I keep my boots in a rubber made tote with rabbit shit. I've been doing it for 3 years and have had lots of deer in visual sight cross my trail in and have never had one spook since I started this routine. It dont take much. About a cup of fresh droppings in a 24" ×18" by 18" tall tote once a week will do the trick. It's not enough to even stink up anything. But it's enough to cover any human smell as long as your not using the boots for anything but hunting. Its only crazy if it doesn't work. .........true story! HA! Don't knock it till you try it.

Thanks for more great info. The way I see it, I try to be as scent free as possible. Maybe the wind swirls just for a second and I don’t completely blow the deer out, maybe they come by a long way down wind and don’t notice, maybe I fool a doe or a little buck so they don’t spook the big buck coming behind them.

I find it's amazing how many hunters don't believe scent is a factor in hunting deer. Those are the ones who go home skunked. Which brings me to another topic: masking you scent. Now, you still need to address odor control in the manner shown in the video. But oftentimes, wind is blowing in every which direction. Those are times when you need a masking product to confuse deer's sniffer. And that product of choice for me, is skunk essence. You can't beat it, hands down. For folks who don't want to handle the real deal, and I understand why, there is a two part synthetic, that doesn't smell until mixed. You just put a few drops on anything absorbent downwind of your stand, and you're golden. It's available from Cabelas, as well as other retailers. Standing undeer a small fir tree, I once had a buck walk by me five feet away. He never knew I was there. He was a blur in the scope, and when I lit the fire, it blew hair off of his shoulder. No joke.

After getting busted time and again I started really looking at scent. I found the biggest difference was switching to rubber boots, spraying everything down with scent eliminator, wearing gloves to walk in and washing clothes in non scented detergents and scent fresh oxy-clean. I started seeing way more deer and other wildlife that would walk down the same trail I came in and never seem to spook or even notice. Once I'm in the stand it is a wind game but getting in and out of the area is where the prep can make a huge difference (at least for me).

Totally agree with your scent control regimen EXCEPT for touching trail cameras with bare hands. Perhaps deer aren't smelling your cameras bc they're 6-10 feet above the ground. I have seen deer smell and spook from my cameras if I have touched them within 2 days. Once I started wearing latex gloves, that behavior ceased. The same thing applies to the bottom of your climbing system and to scrapes and rubs you touch. That's why it takes 2+ days for deer to hit your scrapes. My scrapes are hit in as little as 1 hour.

I am a fan of your advice on scent control which is sound and time tested. On a somewhat related topic: I am into my 2nd year using the HECS clothing system and have experienced what I view as real benefits such as where I had a snow junco land on the end of my gun barrel and just sit there until after a minute or two I shook the barrel to spook him off. It may just be a self fulfilling prophecy but I intend on using it every time out from now on. I'm a retired NJ State Trooper and feel that I am no pushover for gimmicks. Have you ever used this system? Thanks Cris

Looked it up but didn’t see anything, i searched, maybe I over looked? As I mentioned before, me as a viewer and I am sure others love your content and would love to see it implored with hunt footage. As a fan, id love to see the Jeff sits with Dylan or wife or company, maybe guests. That would be a treat man. What a show that would be, any podcast ideas maybe with THP or midwest whitetail? Collaboration amongst such communities would be so great regardless of branding etc, most of all in our household wish you the best, we love your videos, and look forward to each. Best of luck this year.

I leave a pair of my old boots hanging in a tree all year long so the deer get acclimated. Interesting development on our property- we have a 10 pointer that looks very similar to our 11 pointer so I now realize we have two big mature bucks not just one. The 11 pointer we named Lazarus because last year my friend flattened him with a muzzle loader and yet he escaped and showed up on video two weeks later as if nothing happened.

@@adventurerhoades I was in shock when he showed up on video two weeks later. When he was hit by the muzzle loader he went down on his back and made a belly death crawl in to the cover. We tracked him and found him alive. I suggested that we back off-(it was now an hour after sunset) Instead my friend pushed him and he ran off. Tracked a tiny blood trail the next day about 300 yards to a dead end. I have him on video in June and July this year too- we are dealing with supernatural forces. It's 5:30 am and I am going out after him after one more coffee

Love your videos Sir & very sound & knowledgeable advice that you offer, I do trust your advice & opinions. So maybe you night can explain what I witnessed last season. VERY strange, I live in Central Northern TN area & on October 12th last year I took a nice 3 1/2 yr old 8 point nice average buck for the area with the amount of pressure surrounding it. But it wasn't like an October 12th type of sit it was like a sweet November sit, Chasing, Grunting & Thrashing brush. These deer were going crazy & I literally rattled & grunted this deer into 25 yds & smoked em'. But what was puzzling this activity literally carried on with the exception of about a week, week & a half period all the way to the beginning of January. I have hunted for 20 years now & have NEVER witnessed anything like this before TRULY unbelievable, Is there ANY explanation at all you could think of as to why & what exactly I witnessed last fall ?? Because to this day I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor!

I set up a cam this year going in blind for the first time in a new spot, but knew they were there, and saw deer on it that were time stamped a half hour after i set it up within 10 feet of it. I used nothing for scent control actually just got off of work doing construction and had smoked a cigar,in my truck, 20 mins before going in woods. So not sure if it was dumb luck but they were not shy of my fingerprints or cigar smoke???

I can tell you that my feeder is approximately 40 yards from my back door and on a wood line, my stand is 30 yards from my feeder as well. I feed year round and mow, walk all around the area constantly in work clothes, after showering and the deer come back every day for the most part. That is not to say that I watch the mature buck and they are naturally sketchy and stay close or inside the wood line. Like people deer have different personalities I have never had a scent issue. Situation dictates reactions of deer. They naturally are always on guard no matter how long you around the area. So right, they never really get use to you. But as long as you are feeding them they will come.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work! Thanks Kelvin

Hi Christopher...pretty boring but I do not use or believe in using any scent, at all. I try to blend and not draw attention to myself. I don't want to lay a scent trail to place it out in an advantageous location, or walk anywhere but directly to my stand. I also have found there is nothing you can add to a scrape to make it any better than the collection of dozens of deer's preorbital gland scent. I know boring...but haven't used scents for decades.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 OK I understand not drawing attention to yourself, but what about the opposite. Would you consider using a non estrus scent on a drag or on your boots to give other deer a sense of tranquility? I have used non-rut buck urine on the bottom of my boots before and had other bucks (mainly young ones) walk over and even follow that trail without a second glance. some of them don't even look up. I feel like in moderation as long as you don't cover yourself it seems relatively full proof to mask your scent with an odor produced by another deer. whether reproductive or not.

I pulled it sprayed it all down and relocated it haven’t had any issues sense.

Just recently started watching your videos. Great videos. Did you ever comment on ever calm? I use it all the time and it works well on younger deer if you happen to have the wind change. Keeps from spooking them which of course will end up spooking any other mature deer. I’ve had deer bed down 8 yards down wind of me. Thanks.

Must not be sponsored by a ozone company. I trust, along with shower, foam, wipes, spray, cover scent, that ozone will eliminate more odor. Ozone does work best in an enclosed stand but still work in an open stand by drifting with odor molecule. Also works to kill bacteria and viruses!

I read about an experiment a guy did. He placed a bait pile back in his woods, setup trail cameras on it. Then he'd take a towel or a piece of cloth and douse it with scented shampoo, or scented deodorant, or body spray and hang it over the bait. After awhile he'd check the cameras and got pictures of all kinds of deer who came right into the bait. Next he took an unwashed old sweaty T-shirt, hung over the bait. Checked the cameras after a few days, not a single deer was on camera.
