I went to Hakone earlier this year (2019) and two of my favorite spots were the Pola Museum of Art which was both 1) a great art museum and 2) an amazing piece of architecture, as well as the Lalique Museum Hakone which had some amazing pieces of design. The Venetian Glass Museum was a major tourist trap, but by and large the museums there are great and you can get a pass at any of them that will let you visit some number (5?) for a discount fee. On top of the natural beauty and relaxing Ryokan, it was an amazing trip.

The region of Hakone is a breathtaking natural paradise ! 😀🗻 I am impressed by the richness of attractions around this charming town. 😯👍🏻 We can do activities on water, in forest, in town and even in ryokan. 😊 Moreover, Hakone is ideally located close to Fujisan and between Tokyo and Kyoto. 😄 Thanks to you, I know that Hakone is a precious area to visit and to stay at. 🙂🙏🏻

We got engaged at the lookout next to the Detached Palace. Romantic spot with a great view of the lake, pirate ships, mountains and, just at the perfect moment, Mt Fuji appeared from its cloud cover at sunset in all its glory. Arigato, Fuji-san! The palace gardens are well worth the walk to see the view and it is just a short and pretty walk from Motohakone along the lakeside, with wonderful views of the Shrine’s Torii gate. A really great spot which we will always remember.

Lake Ashinoko is beautiful, but I strongly recommend the following. First, bring your mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves. Second, don’t get a bite at the places around the Togendai docks. Wait until the boats bring you around (or back) to the Hakonemachi side, where there are some far, far better little restaurants once you walk a few blocks away from the landing.

Unfortunately, a big typhoon (Hagibis) hit right before were scheduled to go there so the natural hot springs weren't available as well as the trains. Luckily we were able to rent a car so we were able to go there. Make sure to visit outside of the typhoon season if you can!

This's a great video for my next trip's guide! Btw 60-90 minutes from Tokyo is by taking bus? or train?
@japanguide6 жыл бұрын
The Odakyu "Romance Car" train takes about 90min from Shinjuku station while the Odakyu highway bus is about 2 hours. Here's more info on how to access Hakone: www.japan-guide.com/e/e5206.html

Superb video, very useful. Question: to go to Kyoto from Hakone - is it better to go back to Tokyo, or can you travel directly from Hakone? Thanks.
@japanguide5 жыл бұрын
Good question. From Moto-Hakone there are buses to Mishima, Atami and Odawara Stations. From any of these you can get on the Tokaido shinkansen to Kyoto. You can also take the Tozan Railway to Odawara. Here is a page with more detailed information about getting between Hakone and Kyoto which you might find useful: www.japan-guide.com/e/e5206.html?aFROM=2158_5200

I have heard from numerous people that the wait time for the ropeway is super long. If I use a Hakone Free pass on a Wednesday this coming August,going from the opposite direction (Togendai Station to Owakudani Station), How much time should I alot for the wait time at around 11am-noon? How long will the wait be from Owakudani to Sounzan around 3pm? Thank you for your guidance!

going to go to a ryokan in hakone from osaka....whats the best way to get there? we will have a jr pass so if a shinkansen can get us close by, that info would be great.
@japanguide5 жыл бұрын
One of the most efficient ways is to take the Tokaido shinkansen (Kodama or some Hikari) to Mishima and then take a bus to Moto-Hakone. Here is much more detailed information about getting between Hakone and Osaka that you might find useful: www.japan-guide.com/e/e5206.html?aFROM=2157_5200

Hi, do you think I can go to owakudani, checkpoint, amazake chaya, and cruise lake ashi in one day if i'll be going back to shinjuku in the afternoon? hope you read this. thanks in advance!
@japanguide6 жыл бұрын
If you are going by rental car then this should be doable. If you are going by public transportation it will take much longer but it is theoretically possible.

If you do rent a car and drive, don't do it on a weekend as National Route 1is likely to be bumper to bumper. If you want to do it in one day from Tokyo/Shinagawa, consider taking the train to Odawara and riding your bike up to Ashinoko via the old road and down Route 1. Check the Strava Heat Map for GPS tracks.

I will be in Japan on February. Do you think it's a good session to visit Hakone? There is snow or rain there in February?
@japanguide6 жыл бұрын
There is rarely a bad time to visit Hakone and winter should be a good time to enjoy the warm hot springs. Most likely there will be some snow, but the average low temperature for Hakone in February is just above freezing so there's a chance it will be cold without snow. Hope that helps, have a good trip!

Hi i will be in japan tokyo from the 14th of febuary and thinking to pass one day in Hakone.. let's say half day i pass it visiting the open air museum, picasso pavillon... what to you suggest me for the evening?

The area around Hakone-Yumoto station would provide plenty of dining options and also has trains that go directly to Tokyo.

Its possible to visit all year around! During the winter months you might have a higher change of viewing mount Fuji, since the air is crisp and its often not as cloudy!

Hakone would be much better in sunny days. Unfortunately, this video was taken in a worse condition. Hakone usually enjoys its comfortable weathers in the Pacific Ocean side of Japan.
