Eggplants, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. that are left on the vine too long will get overripe. Cucumbers turn yellow and get tough as the seeds develop. Zucchini get as big and tough as baseball bats. Also, when there are ripe fruits on a plant, it will stop producing. It's better to pick them and dry, pickle/ferment, can, or freeze them. Before refrigerators and supermarkets with food out of season, people planned to preserve the season's abundance for later. Even warm areas have rainy and dry seasons.

Great video. Thank you for the information. :) It may be a good idea to keep your bananas away from the rest of your fruit too, because they put out a lot of ethylene gas, which can make anything around it ripen too quickly. There are probably other fruits that you might want to isolate for the same reason. What do you think about those green bags for produce? What to you think of ozone makers and small fans near produce? How do you store your greens? I get mine fresh from the organic farm, wrap the bunches with paper towels, cover the top with a bag, then put the roots or cut ends in a few inches of water to store in the fridge like flower bouquets. I have an ozone maker in the fridge, which seems to help suppress mold growth. I buy bananas in bulk. When they are ripe with freckles, I peel and freeze them in gallon size zip lock bags for use in smoothies and ice-cream. I never run out and I really like them cold. I love your videos!

This is great. I knew some of it from experience but not in such detail Such as the different Temps for different veggies... I was "lame man"... I have no fridge.... I find that without a fridge I lose less fruits and veggies. And I don't have a filthy fridge to clean every couple weeks. I have two homes. One is a getaway from the city. Lima Peru.. The other is at 3900 meters altitude in the central Andes. When I leave the city I have no fridge to empty and clean.... At 3900 meters there is no need for a fridge. Dry and cool.... Muchas gracias!!!!

Have you thought about doing a show in Jamaica? Veganism (ital) and natural foods in general a big part of the culture and faith of many of the people there. Get the cardboard dimple trays from fruit and veg boxes at the supermarket to keep individual fruits apart. The industry has already optimised spacing for airflow. Bonus: If possible fit drawer unit ofthe right size for the tray or if space allows big enough to drop a whole standard veg box into. Fit small fans behind drawer unit to displace ethylene. Extra bonus: if possible fit the drawer unit in a cool cellar or pantry, not in a hot kitchen. We can learn a lot from tradition (pre-refrigeration times) and from developing countries eg storing under soil or in sand root cellar India uses Porous evaporative cooling storage structure (PECSS) / PZECC.

Great info. But what if you don't have AC because the power grid is down? I know produce will age quicker and we probably wouldn't store that much. But how would you keep it if during the summer months, no AC like before electricity? Does anyone have a link I could check out?

Buy some galvanised bins and bury them up to the lid, but so you can remove the lids easily. You could store milk down the bottom as it's only 4°C. You will need air to circulate in there, so make a funnel and put pest wire over that. Store your stuff at the level you need to not freeze it but keep it much longer. I store carrots in a box with soil, just outside in the shed, on the concrete floor.

If you want to avoid bruising the fruit as much as possible, I wouldn't toss them around with so much inertia that they even bounce. (Careful placement can be tedious of course, but there might be a middle way to do it, also hardness of container is a factor, etc.) Having said that, I don't know the exact resistance of each fruit - like orange -, apples definitely need to be hadled with some care... Good tips otherwise, and thanks for the video as always.

So John when we handle fruit we should not slam them around? Them poor apples, I’ve noticed the more any human has the more careless they become that’s with everything live stock to water fowl, to vegetables and fruits, if we have a lot of something we always tend to get careless about how it’s handled. Thanks for the video buddy this is 5 years old now so I don’t expect a response 😂

I had a problem with these last summer until I discovered the real problem was coming from my kitchen garbage where I threw banana peels etc. Since then I put bananas in a cool place outside the house, and use 1 plastic produce bag per day for fruit and veg peels/trimmings, tie it in a loose knot, keep adding to it all day, then tighten the knot at the end of the day and throw the bag in the kitchen garbage. Haven't had a problem since. It was overwhelming for a while.

A raw food diet sounds healthy and it may be but in the long run it’s not sustainable because raw fruits and veg contain very little calories and you’d need to eat a very large amount just to maintain weight and that’s not sustainable in nature there’s no way all that fruit/veg would be available let alone for only one person that’s why humans evolved to eat other things like meat
